The Scottish Youth Parliament, or SYP, is a politically-independent organization that aims to represent the young people of Scotland.
Composed of elected Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP's), they represent the views and opinions of young people aged from 12-25 across a range of constituencies all over the country. In addition Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYP's) are also elected to represent Voluntary Organisations.
The SYP campaign on various issues that affect Scotland's young people. The Youth Parliament has been an advocate for Votes at 16 since its inception in 1999 and has campaigned for it ever since. Notably ensuring that Young People could vote aged 16 and 17 in the Referendum on Scottish Independence. The Scottish Youth Parliament have campaigned on a range of issues from their campaign on Equal Marriage - LoveEqually to their Young Carers Campaign - Care. Fair. Share. The Scottish Youth Parliament's current campaign is POVERTY: See It. Change It.
Youth councils are a form of youth voice engaged in community decision-making. Youth councils exist on local, state, provincial, regional, national, and international levels among governments, non governmental organizations (NGO), schools, and other entities.
For over a decade the UK has run UK youth Parliament. Those between the ages of 11-18 can vote for their MYP. It is largely growing in power over the last five years and their views are listened to.
Those elected for UKYP get to hold the much sought-after suffix of MYP in their names. They do much great work and are some of the most powerful under 18s in the country.
About
The history of youth councils extends back to the early 20th century, when communists and Nazis formed youth-led decision-making bodies for the purpose of propaganization and recruitment. Youth councils have seen a resurgence in Western Europe under the advisement of the European Youth Forum; in the United States and Canada organizations such as The Freechild Project and Points of Light Foundation have been instrumental. Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is also widely credited with promoting youth councils.
The Youth Parliament (Greek:Βουλή των Εφήβων, Voulí ton Efívon, literally "Parliament of the Youth") is a youth parliament organization established in 1994 and hosted in the Hellenic Parliament annually. 300 youth between the ages of 17 and 20 are selected through an online essay competition, 258 from constituencies around Greece, 20 from Cyprus and 22 from other countries around the world with vibrant Greek communities such as Australia and Canada. The aim of the organization is the active participation of young Greeks in the political life of the country and to help them become active and responsible citizens.
Structure
The structure of the Youth Parliament resembles that of the actual Hellenic Parliament. The parliament's main organ in the plenary, which is made up of all delegates. Students also form 5 parliamentary committees that are identical to the existing ones in their functions, with the exception of the Committee of Finance, which is merged with the Committee of Production and Commerce. The organs of the parliament are:
In modern use, "Scottish people" or "Scots" is used to refer to anyone whose linguistic, cultural, family ancestral or genetic origins are from within Scotland. The Latin word Scotti originally referred to the Gaels but came to describe all inhabitants of Scotland. Though sometimes considered archaic or pejorative, the term Scotch has also been used for the Scottish people, though this usage is current primarily outside Scotland.
There are people of Scottish descent in many countries other than Scotland. Emigration, influenced by factors such as the Highland and Lowland Clearances, Scottish participation in the British Empire, and latterly industrial decline and unemployment, resulted in Scottish people being found throughout the world. Large populations of Scottish people settled the new-world lands of North and South America, Australia and New Zealand. There is a Scottish presence at a particularly high level in Canada, which has the highest level per-capita of Scots descendants in the world and second largest population of descended Scots ancestry after the United States. They took with them their Scottish languages and culture.
Power is key to understanding the relationships and structures that have historically shaped who we are and how we live – creating new and exciting opportunities but also potentially negatively exploiting people and planet in the name of global capitalism and progression.
Power is available to young people and within young people. How well they understand it, recognise it, and use it, may just determine the future of all life on this planet!
