One of the plenary sessions held at the third annual Platypus Affiliated Society international convention, hosted at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago between April 29–May 1, 2011, set about exploring the legacy of Trotsky’s Marxism.
Four speakers were asked to consider: “What is the relevance of Trotskyism for the Left today?"
-Mike Macnair, Communist Party of Great Britain; Oxford Univ. St. Hugh College
-Bryan Palmer, Trent University
-Richard Rubin, Platypus
-Jason Wright, International Bolshevik Tendency
What is the relevance of Trotskyism for the Left today? One the one hand, there is a simple answer: The mantle of Trotskyism is claimed by many of today's most prominent and numerous Leftist parties in America and Europe (and beyond). In America, there is the International Socialist Organization; in Britain it is the Socialist Workers Party; and in France the Nouveau parti anticapitaliste also has its origins in Trotskyism. Evidently, the collapse of Stalinism in 1989 left Trotskyism's bona fides, as anti-Stalinist Marxism, intact.
On the other hand, Trotskyism has been infamously associated on the Left with sectarianism -- and martyrdom, not least in the circumstances of the murder of Trotsky himself in 1940. Certainly, the ISO, SWP and NPA long ago made their peace in crucial ways with the politics of the post-Marxist New Left -- a revisionism that their sectarian brethren (for instance, Trotskyism's bete noire, the Spartacist League) have proudly and doggedly opposed.
However, despite their differences, all varieties of Trotskyism today evince the conditions of the New Left's "return to Marxism" in the 1970s, for which the legacy of Trotsky provided one significant vehicle (the other being Maoism). For instance Trotsky's biographer, Isaac Deutscher, strongly influenced the journal, the New Left Review, still a flagship of the Left today. And yet there is something peculiar about this legacy. As one Platypus writer has suggested, Trotsky is as out of place in the post-WWII world as Voltaire or Rousseau would have been in the world after the French Revolution. Trotsky, unlike Trotskyism, exemplifies the classical Marxism of the early 20th century, and that tradition certainly died with him. Thus, before we can understand how Trotskyism's legacy has influenced the Marxism of our time, we must first answer the question: What has Trotskyism made of Trotsky's Marxism?

Young People in Politics S2E2 - Socialist Party (Ireland)
Politics in its very nature invites debate and over the last few years the youth voice has begun to have more and more of an impact on political parties and discussion. I sat down with members of some of Ireland's biggest parties to discuss why they initially got involved in politics and why they joined their respective party. In this episode I sit down with Ty Nolan a member of the Socialist Party to get his views on why he got involved in politics, why he joined the Socialist Party and where he sees youth politics going in the future.

How Sinn Fein’s Rise Is Shaking Up Ireland’s Politics
Rooted in its campaign for a united Ireland, Sinn Fein was long an outsider in politics due to its links with the Irish Republican Army. With the conflict in Northern Ireland largely over since a 1998 peace deal, the movement has reinvented itself to appeal to a new generation of voters.
Now, in a historic shift, it has become the biggest party in the north and also leads opinion polls in the Irish Republic to the south. That makes its demand for a referendum on unification harder to ignore.
The party, whose name means “Ourselves Alone,” was created amid the campaign for Irish home rule at the start of the 20th century. After the Catholic south won its independence from Britain in 1921, Sinn Fein split, ultimately creating what are now the three largest parties in the Republic.

Socialism 2016 is a weekend of debate and discussion organised by the Socialist Party
Speakers included Paul Murphy, Anti-Austerity Alliance TD (Member of Parliament) in Ireland, an Irish Socialist Party member and Hannah Sell, deputy general secretary of the Socialist Party of England and Wales. Also speaking was Isai Priya, from Tamil Solidarity, Nancy Taaffe, a local housing campaigner who played a leading role in the Butterfields tenants victory, and Zoe Brunswick, a medical student.
"Politics has been turned upside down." Irish TD (MP) Paul Murphy, in the midst of fighting outrageous charges of false imprisonment, summed up Socialism 2016 perfectly when speaking at the 'Organising the resistance' rally which closed an inspiring weekend of discussion and debate.
Paul could go to jail next year as the Irish state attempts to find him guilty of spurious charges relating to a peaceful sit-down protest in Jobstown, Dublin, in 2014 against the hated and now defeated water charges in Ireland. Paul said: "We will make them rue the day they came after us and our trial will be class struggle in the courtroom."

The modern-day Sinn Fein started to seriously contest elections south of the border in the 1980s under a strategy known as the “Armalite and the Ballot Box.” (Armalite is a gun manufacturer whose weapons were used by Republican paramilitaries against British security forces).
Today, it’s a broadly center-left party that campaigns for higher government spending, better housing and increased taxes on the rich.
