The Saskatchewan Youth Parliament (SYP) is a non-partisan organization of young people that meets to discuss and debate political and social issues. Members learn about the mechanics of government, such as parliamentary procedure, decision making, and the rules of debate in a parliamentary democracy. Additionally, members are exposed to a variety of viewpoints from youth from around Saskatchewan. At its annual Christmas session, SYP members are given the privilege of debating at the Saskatchewan Legislature in Regina, in the same seats as the real Members of the Legislative Assembly. SYP is run for youth by youth by a cabinet elected at the Annual Christmas Session each year. Cabinet does everything from planning the events, to finances and communications.
According to its mission statement:
History
SYP first met in 1912 as the Saskatchewan Older Boys' Parliament. However, it had a shaky beginning and collapsed after a few years of existence.
In 1923, SYP was revived under the TUXIS movement as an organisation for Christian boys. That Christmas, the session was held at the Saskatchewan Legislature, where it has been held almost every year since.
Youth councils are a form of youth voice engaged in community decision-making. Youth councils exist on local, state, provincial, regional, national, and international levels among governments, non governmental organizations (NGO), schools, and other entities.
For over a decade the UK has run UK youth Parliament. Those between the ages of 11-18 can vote for their MYP. It is largely growing in power over the last five years and their views are listened to.
Those elected for UKYP get to hold the much sought-after suffix of MYP in their names. They do much great work and are some of the most powerful under 18s in the country.
About
The history of youth councils extends back to the early 20th century, when communists and Nazis formed youth-led decision-making bodies for the purpose of propaganization and recruitment. Youth councils have seen a resurgence in Western Europe under the advisement of the European Youth Forum; in the United States and Canada organizations such as The Freechild Project and Points of Light Foundation have been instrumental. Article 12 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child is also widely credited with promoting youth councils.
The Youth Parliament (Greek:Βουλή των Εφήβων, Voulí ton Efívon, literally "Parliament of the Youth") is a youth parliament organization established in 1994 and hosted in the Hellenic Parliament annually. 300 youth between the ages of 17 and 20 are selected through an online essay competition, 258 from constituencies around Greece, 20 from Cyprus and 22 from other countries around the world with vibrant Greek communities such as Australia and Canada. The aim of the organization is the active participation of young Greeks in the political life of the country and to help them become active and responsible citizens.
Structure
The structure of the Youth Parliament resembles that of the actual Hellenic Parliament. The parliament's main organ in the plenary, which is made up of all delegates. Students also form 5 parliamentary committees that are identical to the existing ones in their functions, with the exception of the Committee of Finance, which is merged with the Committee of Production and Commerce. The organs of the parliament are:
Saskatchewan (i/səˈskætʃəwᵻn/ or /səˈskætʃəˌwɑːn/) is a prairieprovince in Canada, which has a total area of 651,900 square kilometres (251,700sqmi) and a land area of 592,534 square kilometres (228,800sqmi), the remainder being water area (covered by lakes/ponds, reservoirs and rivers). Saskatchewan is bordered on the west by Alberta, on the north by the Northwest Territories, on the east by Manitoba, and on the south by the American states of Montana and North Dakota. As of December 2013, the population of Saskatchewan was estimated at 1,114,170. Residents primarily live in the southern half of the province. Of the total population, 257,300 live in the province's largest city, Saskatoon, while 210,000 live in the provincial capital, Regina. Other major cities include Prince Albert, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, Estevan, Swift Current, and North Battleford.
Saskatchewan is a landlocked province with large distances to moderating bodies of waters. As a result, its climate is extremely continental, rendering severe winters all throughout the province. Southern areas have very warm or hot summers. Midale and Yellow Grass near the U.S. border are tied for the highest ever recorded temperatures in Canada with 45°C (113°F) observed at both locations in July 1937. In winter, temperatures below −45°C (−49°F) are possible even in the south during extreme cold snaps.
The electoral district of Saskatchewan was originally within the geographical region of the Northwest Territories. With the creation of the province of Saskatchewan in 1905, this riding, with territory in Alberta as well, was replaced in 1907 by Saskatchewan riding within the province of Saskatchewan.
