Sandra Smith "Sandy" Thompson (born October 4, 1946) is a former Louisiana state administrator, who retired in 2007 from the directorship of the Atchafalaya Basin Program.
Her career in state government began in the 1970s when she worked in the office of then Secretary of StateWade O. Martin, Jr. She was named director of the Atchafalaya Basin Division of the Department of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. The lieutenant governor now heads Culture, Recreation, and Tourism.
The Atchafalaya project, which encompassing a million acres (4,000km²), is the largest bottomland swamp in North America. She left the project in 1979 to run unsuccessfully as a Democrat for secretary of state. The position became open when incumbent Paul J. Hardy, then of St. Martinville, who had succeeded Martin in 1976, ran unsuccessfully for governor.
She began her career at Magazine Management Co. in New York as editor of True Secrets.
She was an editor, writer and columnist for the St. Petersburg Times. She was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize .

Sandra Annear Thompson is an American linguist specializing in discourse analysis, typology, and interactional linguistics. She has published numerous books and her research has appeared in many linguistics journals. She is currently Professor Emerita of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) and serves on the editorial board of several prominent linguistics journals.
Thompson is known for her large body of research on Mandarin grammar, much of which she has conducted in collaboration with UCSB colleague Charles Li. Their 1981 book Mandarin Chinese: A Functional Reference Grammar is widely cited and often compared to Yuen Ren Chao's A Grammar of Spoken Chinese (1968). That work, along with her earlier work in Chinese resultative verb compounds, was a major contribution to the study of Chinese morphosyntax, and stood apart from contemporary research in that it devoted attention to the internal structure of Chinese compound words, whereas other research focused on the syntactic nature of compound words. She has also conducted research on discourse and grammar, collaborating with linguistics such as Paul Hopper on topics including transitivity and emergent grammar. With Christian Matthiessen and Bill Mann she developed rhetorical structure theory.
Thompson and Charles Li also carried out extensive documentation of the Wappo language, and, with Joseph Sung-yul Park, published a reference grammar of the language in 2006.
