Why Louisiana's $1.3 Billion Shrimp Industry Could Go Extinct | Big Business | Business Insider
Louisiana catches about 70 million tons of shrimp, but it's not enough to meet America's surging demand. Cheap imports make up 90% of what the US consumes, and most of it is farmed in countries like India using controversial tactics. Dock prices in Louisiana have fallen to compete. It's left US shrimpers with a perfect storm of rock-bottom prices and sky-high fuel. Up and down the supply chain, companies worry this may be the last generation of Louisiana shrimpers.

We met bestselling author and doctor Abraham Verghese for a conversation about books, the importance of literature, and the necessity to stand up for our values.
“I do believe that literature has an important role in societies. And you can address this in the converse. Any society that begins to ban books or restrict speech is also a society that's in trouble. It's not democratic and not a place you'd want to live. So, I think authors have a responsibility to speak out and to try their best to contradict that.”
“Proust said that we don't read the novel. The novel reads us. We respond to it because it's diagnosing us and doing something to our soul to explain who we are. And so, I think the moment societies don't read very much, they're not reflective and begin to censor and ban books. And you're on the verge of something very, very dangerous.”
“I think the mark of our society is that a book can suddenly take the place by storm and capture people's imagination, and it can change people. One example is Uncle Tom's Cabin in America. That one novel, for all its weaknesses, ended slavery in America. It wasn't a president; it wasn't a civil war. One novel captured the public's imagination and made them realize that this was not palatable to own and sell other human beings.”
“I'm not typically an outspoken political person. But I recently found myself more willing to speak out because it's really not about one candidate versus another. It's about the future. It's about the climate. It's about our kids and my grandkids and what the world would look like. And I have a duty to speak out about that.”
Abraham Verghese (b. 1955) was born and raised in Ethiopia as the child of Indian teachers. After the military coup in 1974, he and his family left the country and settled in the United States, where Verghese became a citizen. Today, he is a professor of medicine at Standford University and has received multiple honorary doctorate degrees as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023. In 2015, President Barack Obama presented him with the National Humanities Medal. Verghese is the author of two bestselling novels that both have received wide public attention. Cutting for Stone was published in 2009 and remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over two years. It also topped the Independent Booksellers list. The Covenant of Water was published in 2023, stayed on The New York Times bestseller list for 37 weeks, and was listed by the newspaper as one of its 100 Notable Books of 2023. In January 2024, Oprah Winfrey announced that she had optioned the film rights. Before that, she had declared The Covenant of Water one of her favourite books.
Abraham Verghese was interviewed by Marc-Christoph Wagner in November 2024. The conversation took place at Verghese’s Danish Publisher Gyldendal in Copenhagen.

Drought affected Mississippi River reveals shipwreck in Louisiana | USA TODAY
Low water levels in the Mississippi River revealed a shipwreck that's believed to be a ferry from the early 20th century near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The unusually low water level in the lower Mississippi River is causing barges to get stuck in mud and sand, disrupting river travel for shippers, recreational boaters and even passengers on a cruise line.
Lack of rainfall has left the Mississippi River approaching record low levels in some areas from Missouri south through Louisiana. The U.S. Coast Guard said at least eight "groundings" of barges have been reported, despite low-water restrictions on barge loads.

state of louisiana shipwreck the maidens
Description:
A general description of the physical features of the dive site
The deteriorating stern of the wreck is at a depth of 25 metres at the base of the north east side of Hunter’s Rock on a sandy/pebble seabed. The bow of the wreck is located approximately 80 metres south east of the stern on the other side of Hunters Rock (see State of Louisiana Bow Section page). Both parts of the wreck can be explored in one dive but given the short tidal window, it is recommended to split this into two separate dives to allow more time on each part of the wreck. However the stern end is a better dive with more to see. The bow is very small and once you have seen it you can return to midships for ascent.

Louisiana Ship Building Company Finds Mystery Message In A Bottle
A mystery unfolded last spring along the bank of Louisiana’s Yazoo river when a salvage diver from Big River Ship Builders found a green bottle. Inside was a weathered piece of paper with a child’s writing. With few clues about who might have sent it, the company's manager, Brad Babb, was on a mission to find the writer through social media. After thousands of views, they received a call from Eric and Melanie Dahl, the parents of the little boy who wrote the letter. Their son and author of the note, Brian, passed away 15 years ago in an accident. Melanie, Eric, and one of their sons, Chris, traveled from Mississippi to Louisiana to meet Brad’s team and share the living memories of Brian.

Officials cleared dozens of barges from a river channel near Lake Providence, Louisiana, and dredged it after a groundling occurred, halting river traffic in both directions for days. To keep river traffic flowing, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been dredging the Mississippi at several spots and placed limits on the number of barges each tow can move.
