50 Years Ago The First Space Station Launched - Salyut 1
Salyut 1 was a quick hack put together by Soviet engineers who saw an opportunity to develop something historic. They took the structure of the military Almaz station which was still in development and added existing working hardware to make it a fully functioning space station.
Unfortunately, while it was a success there were problems with both visits to the station, one crew was unable to dock properly, while the second crew died on the way back to Earth.

Space Race KSP - Salyut 1 and Soyuz 11 - Breaking Ground
For this episode of Space Race KSP I have tried to show the whole Salyut 1 story including the missions Soyuz 10 and Soyuz 11. Be warned there is graphic content near the end of the video.
The story gets off to a good start with the launch of Salyut 1, the worlds first space station. Moving forward we hit a few snags with Soyuz 10 when it fails to hard dock. Then fate takes a turn for the worst for Soyuz 11 with the loss of its three man crew when their capsule unexpectedly decompresses while in the vacuum of space.

Salyut 1 - The First Space Station - Kerbal Space Program (RSS/RO)
Despite an array of problems, the first space station, Salyut 1, made important progress toward living and working in space long-term and paved the way for future space stations. Launched by the Soviet Union in 1971, the port orbited the Earth almost 3,000 times during its 175 days in space before it was intentionally crashed into the Pacific Ocean.
Shaped like a cylinder, Salyut 1 bore three pressurized compartments for astronauts and one unpressurized area containing the engines and control equipment. The station was about 65 feet (20 meters) long and 13 feet (4 meters) in diameter at its widest point. Two double sets of solar panels extended like wings on the exterior of the compartments at either end.

Salyut 1
Salyut 1 was the first space station launched into low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on April 19, 1971. The Salyut program followed this with five more successful launches of seven more stations. The final module of the program, Zvezda, became the core of the Russian segment of the International Space Station and remains in orbit today.

Salyut 7 - The forgotten rescue of a dead space station
In 1985 one of the most audacious space rescue missions was launched by the Soviets to recover a space station that had been dead for months due to an unknown fault.
A feat that was unparalleled in space exploration and rewrote the books on what was thought possible: and yet, its story has fallen into obscurity and conspiracy theories.
This is the story Salyut 7 and how the Soviet crew of two, Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Victor Savinikh against the odds rescued it in a daring mission that was the first of its kind in space exploration.
**Apologies to all the Russian speakers out there on the mispronunciations of the crew names, hopefully, next time I will have a better source for how they are meant to sound**

DECOMPRESSION BLUES | Soyuz 11 Disaster
Salyut 1 the first space station was launched unmanned from the Soviet Union on April 19, 1971. Two days later, Soyuz 10 lifted off, carrying a crew of three toward the space station. the mission was to remain in space for 30 days.
The cosmonauts attempted to dock with Salyut 1, but although they were able to lock onto the station, a problem with the hatch kept them from being able to enter it.
On June 6, Soyuz 11 transported cosmonauts Georgi Dobrovolski, Vladislav Vokov, and Viktor Patsayev to Salyut 1, where after three hours, The spacecraft successfully docked with the station, and the cosmonauts remained on board for 23 days, setting a new record. they became the first men to live aboard an Earth orbiting station.

Visiting the space station
Salyut 1 launched unmanned from the Soviet Union on April 19, 1971. Two days later, Soyuz 10 lifted off, carrying a crew of three toward the space station with the intention of remaining in space for 30 days. The cosmonauts attempted to dock with Salyut 1, but although they were able to lock onto the station, a problem with the hatch kept them from being able to enter it. They returned home early and unsuccessful. During the re-entry process, a problem rendered the air supply of Soyuz 10 toxic, and one of the cosmonauts slipped into unconsciousness. All three survived with no long-term effects.
On June 6, Soyuz 11 transported cosmonauts Georgi Dobrovolski, Vladislav Vokov, and Viktor Patsayev to Salyut 1, where after three hours, they successfully docked with the station. They remained on board for 383 orbits in the course of just over three weeks, setting a new space endurance record. On June 16, smoke from a control panel caused the crew to consider abandoning the station, but the unit was switched off and the problem averted.
On June 29, the crew transferred back to the Soyuz 11 and began the return to Earth. Disaster struck when a ventilation valve was jolted open during the re-entry, depressurizing the interior of the ship. Cosmonauts at the time did not wear suits while in flight, so all three men were tragically killed. As a result, several changes were made to the Soviet policy, but they could not be implemented while Salyut 1 remained in orbit. No further trips were made to the station.
On October 11, 1971, the engines on Salyut 1 fired for the last time, bringing the space station into a lower orbit that would result in its eventual plunge into the Pacific Ocean. But despite its early death, Salyut 1 set the stage for stations to come after. The Soviets continued to put short-term stations into space for several years until they felt they were ready for a long-term project.
