Grateful Dead - St. Stephen (Winterland 12/31/78) (Official Live Video)
"In and out of the repertoire it goes...St. Stephen was around for a long time, but not always around. It was played consistently 1968-1971, then gone until its return in 1976, when it was played quite a bit through 1976 and 1977, into early 1978. It then returned for three versions twice, 12/30/78 to 1/10/79, and from 10/11/83 to 10/31/83, after which it was never heard live again. This is from the magnificent Closing Of Winterland show." - David Lemieux

Grateful Dead - St. Stephen
Garcia,Lesh,Hunter
Lyrics:
Saint stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes,
Country garden in the wind and the rain,
Wherever he goes the people all complain.
Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline.
Did it matter, does it now? stephen would answer if he only knew how.
Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell,
Hell halfway twixt now and then,
Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.
Lady finger, dipped in moonlight, writing what for? across the morning sky.
Sunlight splatters, dawn with answer, darkness shrugs and bids the day good-bye.
Speeding arrow, sharp and narrow,
What a lot of fleeting matters you have spurned.
Several seasons with their treasons,
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it you...

Saint Stephen was one of the first ordained deacons of the Church and the first Christian martyr.
While working among the early Christians, the Apostles heard a complaint that their Greek-speaking widows were being neglected during the distribution of alms. The Twelve decided to appoint seven deacons to oversee this distribution and ensure fairness.
Of the seven selected, Stephen was the oldest and given the title of "archdeacon." He was full of faith and the Holy Spirit.
Stephen's popularity created enemies among some Jews. Members of the Synagogue of Roman Freedmen entered debate with Stephen and accused him of blasphemy. Filled with wisdom, Stephen won his debate.
The losers did not accept this outcome. Stephen was put on trial and several false witnesses were brought forward by the Sanhedrin to testify he was guilty of blasphemy.
Stephen responded to these charges by detailing the history of Israel and outlining the blessings God had bestowed upon the nation.
As Stephen concluded his defense, he looked up and saw a vision of Jesus standing at the right hand of God. He said, "Look, I can see heaven thrown open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God."
The angry crowd rushed upon Stephen in disbelief and carried him outside of the city to stone him.
As Stephen was stoned to death, he spoke his last words, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. Lord, do not hold this sin against them."
Following these words, Stephen died.
In 415 a priest claimed he had a vision of Stephen's tomb and located his remains. The name inside the tomb confirmed the find.
St. Stephen is often depicted with stones, a Gospel Book, a miniature church and a martyr's palm frond. He is the patron saint of bricklayers and deacons. His feast day is celebrated on December 26.

Several seasons with their treasons,
Wrap the babe in scarlet colors, call it your own.
Did he doubt or did he try? answers aplenty in the bye and bye,
Talk about your plenty, talk about your ills,
One man gathers what another man spills.
Saint stephen will remain, all hes lost he shall regain,
Seashore washed by the suds and foam,
Been here so long, hes got to calling it home.
Fortune comes a crawlin, calliope woman, spinnin that curious sense of your own.
Can you answer? yes I can. but what would be the answer to the answer man?

HUNGARY: KING STEPHEN CANONISATION
(20 Aug 2000) English/Nat
Hungarians were marking a millennium of statehood and Christianity on Sunday with fireworks, parades and the canonization of their beloved King Stephen, whose rule began 1,000 years ago.
For the first time ever, the Eastern Orthodox Church was canonizing a saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
Each year Hungarians mark St. Stephen's Day, to honor King Stephen, who ruled Hungary from 1000 to 1038.
The king is credited with bringing Christianity to the country's tribes and was elevated to sainthood by the Roman Catholic Church in 1686.
But the Eastern Orthodox Church, which split from Rome in 1054, did not recognize King Stephen as a saint, as it did not recognize anyone canonized by Rome.

Hungary Celebrates Birthday with Cross in the Sky
Hungary celebrated the nation's birthday in the form of St. Stephen's Day with a cross lit up in the sky. This was unthinkable in Hungary in 1956. Things like this would have been celebrated in America in 1956 but are unthinkable today.

Christians in Hungary mark St Stephen's day
(20 Aug 2021) Thousands of Christians accompanied the mummified Holy Right of Saint Stephen during Hungary's national holiday, commemorating the foundation of the state on Friday.
Each year Hungarians mark St. Stephen's Day, to honour King Stephen, who ruled Hungary from 1000 to 1038.
He became the first canonized saint in Hungary's history.
He was also the monarch who turned Hungary into a legitimate Christian state after about a century of paganism, and largely considered the state-founder of the country.
One of the most important events in Budapest on 20 August is the Holy Right Procession, where traditionally starting from the Basilica of St. Stephen, thousands of Christians accompany the mummified right fist of the 1,000-year-old saint-king through the streets of the capital.

At an evening Mass celebrated in Budapest's Basilica by a special emissary of Pope John Paul II, Bishop Angelo Sodano, Patriarch Bartholomeos I of Constantinople, head of the Eastern Orthodox Church, announced the recognition of St. Stephen by the Eastern Orthodox Church as one of its own saints.
High clergy from both east and west attended.
In a statement to the state Hungarian news agency, Sodano welcomed the canonization of St. Stephen by the Eastern Orthodox Church, saying the move may mean a return to unity of the two churches, despite the painful differences of the past centuries.
Roughly 60 percent of Hungary's 10 (m) million people are Catholic, while fewer than 1 percent are Eastern Orthodox.
After the Mass, the festivities were to continue with a religious procession in which relics were to be taken to the House of Parliament, where St. Stephen's crown is on permanent display.
The relics include a part of St. Stephen's skull, on loan from a Dominican monastery in Dubrovnik, Croatia, where it has been since 1590, when it was hidden for safekeeping from Tartars who invaded the region; and the king's right hand, called the Holy Right, usually on display in the Basilica.
Church officials expected 100-thousand people to participate.

King Stephen was made a saint on 20 August 1083 and became the patron saint of Hungary.
As part of the canonization process, the king's remains were exhumed from his crypt and legend has it that his right hand had not decayed at all.
The supple arm was promptly lopped off to be preserved and venerated.
Today, the mummified fist resides in an ornate golden reliquary in the Basilica of St. Stephen and is only taken out once a year for the Holy Right Procession when the relic leads the parade.
St. Stephen's Day has been a national holiday since 1771 when Queen Maria Theresia changed it from a church feast to an official national holiday.
During the country's communist time, from the early 1950s until the late 1980s, the traditional Holy Right Procession was not allowed.
The relic was only placed in front of the altar of the Basilica of St. Stephen for Christians to celebrate Hungary's first saint.
In 2020, the Holy Right Procession was cancelled due to the pandemic.
