The island was uninhabited when discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. One of the most remote islands in the world, it was for centuries an important stopover for ships sailing to Europe from Asia and South Africa. Napoleon was imprisoned there in exile by the British, as were Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo (for leading a Zulu army against British rule) and more than 5,000 Boers taken prisoner during the Second Boer War.
Between 1791 and 1833, Saint Helena became the site of a series of experiments in conservation, reforestation and attempts to boost rainfall artificially. This environmental intervention was closely linked to the conceptualisation of the processes of environmental change and helped establish the roots of environmentalism.
Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is a British Overseas Territory in the southern Atlantic Ocean consisting of the island of Saint Helena, Ascension Island and the archipelago of Tristan da Cunha. It was known as Saint Helena and Dependencies until 1 September 2009, when a new constitution came into force giving the three islands equal status within the territory.
Administrative divisions
Administratively, the territory is divided into the same three parts as the territory's geography, namely Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Each is governed by a council. The Governor of the territory presides over the Saint Helena Legislative Council, while he or she is represented by an Administrator on Ascension Island and an Administrator on Tristan da Cunha that preside over these two areas' Island Councils. See Constitution section below.
The island of St Helena is then further divided into eight districts.
Saint Helena (sometimes St. Helen of Sköfde; Swedish: Elin av Skövde) was a woman of high birth, who lived in the 12th century, and was considered to be the patron saint of Skövde, Sweden. Saint Helena decorates the Skövde city arm and is the patron saint of the church in Ränneslöv.
She was born around 1101. She was of noble family and is generally believed to have been the daughter of the Jarl Guthorm. In adult life, she married and bore children. After the death of her husband, she lived on his farm at Våmb in Skara. She also gave her belongings to the poor and undertook a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. She returned and settled on the farm where she dedicated herself to spiritual and kind actions. According to legend, it is Helena who built Våmbs Church (Våmbs kyrka) in the Skara diocese at the farm in Våmb. The church in Skövde, now called St. Helena Church (Sankta Helena kyrka), was also largely built as a result of generous donations from Helena.
Helena had a daughter who had married, and was beaten and abused by her husband. After a time, the servants at Helena's farm united and killed the husband. His relatives blamed Helena for the murder, even though she was on a pilgrimage to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem at the time. To avenge his death they killed Helena at Götene while she was on her way to church in 1160.
The first European to explore St. Helena was most likely Spanish explorer Lucas Vázquez de Ayllón around 1520, as part of the Spanish exploration and colonization of the sea islands. Deepwater Port Royal was established as the center of the area, and at one time was the capital of the entire Spanish colony of Florida. The area was later colonized by the French, the Spanish again, then finally fell into English hands, who occupied it until the American Revolution. In the War of 1812, Saint Helena saw some British naval presence.
The Province of South Carolina became a slave society after rice and indigo became established as commodity crops. From 1708, a majority of the population were slaves, many born in Africa.
South Carolina was the first state to ratify the Articles of Confederation and the eighth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution on May 23, 1788. South Carolina became the first state to vote to secede from the Union on December 20, 1860. After the American Civil War, it was readmitted into the United States on June 25, 1868.
The BI-LO 200 was a former NASCARBusch Series event held from 1983–2004, and was always run as an accompanying race to the Southern 500. When the Southern 500 was dropped from the schedule and Darlington's Busch Series schedule was reduced to one race, this race was removed in favor of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway because of the Ferko lawsuit.
Mark Martin led all drivers in race wins with five. Only two other drivers, Harry Gant and Jeff Burton, won multiple BI-LO 200s, with both drivers winning three times.
Indien (1778), often L'Indien, was a frigate built for the U.S. Commissioners in France—Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane, and Arthur Lee— to a design by the French naval architect Jacques Boux. She was laid down early in 1777 by a private shipyard in Amsterdam and launched in February 1778. Apparently she was built with the scantlings and lines of a small 74-gun Third Rateship of the line but was a frigate in construction. In 1780 the Duke of Luxembourg chartered her to the navy of South Carolina and she sailed as South Carolina.
Her armament consisted of 28 Swedish long 36-pounder guns on her main deck, and 12 long 12-pounders on her forecastle and her quarterdeck. Perhaps her greatest significance is that the marine architect Joshua Humphreys studied her sleek hull and used her lines in designing the United States Navy's first frigates, especially USSConstitution and USSConstellation.
Construction history
Late in the year John Paul Jones sailed for France, hoping to assume command of Indien; but, before his arrival, financial difficulties and opposition from the still-neutral Dutch government, under pressure from Great Britain, had forced the Commissioners to sell the new frigate to Louis XVI, King of France.
St. Helena Island is a magical place on the South Carolina coastline where African American men and women have farmed this land and fished this water for centuries--first as plantation slaves, then as freedmen. It's now one of the last communities on the East Coast that hasn't been swallowed up by development and tourism. But St. Helena's way of life is at a crossroads. Watch and see how farmers and fishermen have adapted to the modern world and whether they would be able to pass this rich heritage to the next generation.

St. Helena Island - South Carolina
Welcome to St. Helena Island South Carolina! It’s a Sea Island nestled between downtown Beaufort and the resort communities of Harbour Island and Fripp Island. The Island measures a whopping 63 square miles but only has a population of about 10,000. It offers a rural Lowcountry lifestyle with abundant farms and shrimp docks and it’s a major center of African-American Gullah culture who still have a very strong presence here today and continue to work on protecting St. Helena Island from the coastal development that has overrun nearby islands like Hilton Head. It’s home to the Penn Center founded in 1862, which was one of the first schools for children of freed slaves. It’s home to the Penn Center founded in 1862, which was one of the first schools for children of freed slaves. And this small rural cottage is where Martin Luther King drafted his famous, I have a dream speech!
Another historic landmark is The Chapel of Ease, built in 1740 and served the families who owned plantations. After a fire, Only part of the walls remain surrounded by ancient Oaks, dripping in Spanish moss.
The commercial center is called Frogmore, It’s got colorful shops and locally owned restaurants. one of my favorite shops is Macdonald Market Place, offering antiques, gifts, food, home goods and their famous Bloody Mary mix made from locally grown tomatoes! If you want authentic Gullah food, just stop by Gullah Grub, they source everything from the local farmers!
As far as real estates goes here, St Helena offers everything from rural acerage, waterfront properties and gated communities. One of the popular rural, waterfront areas is called Lands End.
Land’s End is located at the Southern tip. It’s also the home of Fort Freemont, which is
A 15 acre site that contains ruins of batteries built to defend Port Royal Sound in the Spanish American war. It also has 900 feet of beach access for the public to enjoy! Real estate here varies greatly, from gorgeous homes on deep water with private docks to small bungalows and camp sites for weekenders, who come to enjoy boating and fishing.
Two of the gated, waterfront communities here are Dataw Island and Polawana Island. Dataw is an exclusive golf, tennis and boating community. It’s got two restaurants and it’s own boat marina and lot sizes can be up to a half an acre. Polawana Island is right nextdoor but lots here are a minimum of 5 acres, giving you privacy and serenity to enjoy nature at its best! and the homes that have been built are spectacular! They provide a boat landing and day dock.
If you make a visit to St. Helena Island or decide to make it your permanent home, you are sure to want to visit a the local favorite, Gay Fish Company. It’s a family owned, local shrimp company serving the Lowcountry for over 70 years!
The other favorite I’d recommend is Dempsey Farms, you come pick what ever veggies are in season! they’ve been serving the community for over 60 years!
So this is just a glimpse of what St. Helena has to offer with its robust history, and benefits of both rural and suburban lifestyle! If I can be of any help with real estate in the area, please reach out to me any time! Thanks for watching!
