Julie Dash and the L.A. Rebellion
American film director, writer, and producer Julie Dash is a member of the L.A. Rebellion, a generation of African and African American artists who studied at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television from the late 1960s to the late 1980s. Dash discusses her early life in New York City and her involvement with the art and politics of filmmaking through her association with the Studio Museum of Harlem, a connection that ultimately led to her participation in the L.A. Rebellion. Her 1991 feature Daughters of the Dust, a fictionalized retelling of her father’s Gullah family roots, became the first full-length film directed by an African American woman to obtain general theatrical release i...

-25th Anniversary 2K Restoration-
In theaters beginning November 18th.
Written and Directed by Julie Dash.
DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST is a portrait of the women in the Peazant family, who belong to the creole Gullah culture - former slaves living in the Sea Islands who have been able to preserve much of their African cultural heritage. As they prepare to migrate, leaving their land and legacy for the promise of the North, conflict and struggles rise to the surface. It unfolds over the course of their final picnic in their current home; saturating the audience with impressionistic colors, African symbolism, Geechee-Gullah rituals, cooking, and dialect all expressing the complex resonances of the Lowcountry lifestyle. DAUGHTERS OF THE DUST is a post-slavery narrative about cultural memory, notions of home and belonging, and conflicts of Black female identity.
