The Forgotten History of Celtic Anatolia
Galatia was a region in north-central Anatolia (modern-day Turkey) settled by the Celtic Gauls c. 278-277 BCE. The name comes from the Greek for “Gaul” which was repeated by Latin writers as Galli. The Celts were offered the region by the king of neighboring Bithynia, Nicomedes I (r. 278-255 BCE) and established themselves in three provinces made up of four cantons (wards) comprised of city-states (known as oppidum) governed, respectively, by the three tribes which made up the initial group: the Tectosages, Trocmil, and Tolistogogii.

St Theodore, Euchaïta and Anatolia, c 500 1000 CE
Dr. John Haldon discusses the interrelationship between environment, climate and society is by definition highly complex. Simplistic arguments to the effect that climate and environmental change can explain political and social-economic change if they appear to correlate can be misleading, and only a close analysis of the specific mechanics of change can reveal any putative causal connections. This paper will take the case of Byzantine Anatolia between the 6th and 8th c., together with the case of the small provincial city of Euchaïta in the Pontus, the center of the cult of St Theodore ‘the Recruit’, one of the most important soldier-saints of the eastern Christian world, and examine some of the evidence for such causal links. As part of this discussion, I will discuss the reasons for the...

It is best known from the biblical Book of Galatians, a letter written to the Christian community there by Saint Paul.

As part of this discussion, I will discuss the reasons for the surprising survival of the eastern Roman empire against all the odds, facing as it did far more powerful enemies and confronted by unprecedented economic and political-military challenges, during the crisis of the later 7th and early 8th c
