Week 295 - 300,000 Germans Surrender in the Ruhr - WW2 - April 20, 1945
The Soviet drive on Berlin continues, but it is now very much a race between the forces of Georgy Zhukov and those of Ivan Konev. In the west, over 300,000 Germans surrender to the Allies as the Ruhr Pocket is eliminated, though there are advances by all Allied armies this week on the whole Western Front. There is even an Allied breakthrough in Italy, though on Okinawa American attacks get nowhere. The Japanese are advancing in China, and in Burma the Allied drive for Rangoon continues.

If these pumps ever stop, part of Germany floods.
The Ruhr Valley, in north-west Germany, is an industrial coal-mining area. And because of that kilometre-deep mining, parts of it have sunk, the drainage patterns have changed: and now, if the pumps of Emschergenossenschaft ever stop, quite a few towns and cities will end up flooded.

1923: The Occupation of the Ruhr | GCSE History Revision | Weimar & Nazi Germany
It’s 1923 and the German government is bankrupt, having spent all its gold reserves in the First World War. On top of this the Treaty of Versailles mean that the government can’t access the revenue from many areas that have previously been important wealth earners for the country, such as the coalfields in Silesia. And just to make it even worse, the German government has to pay hefty reparations to the Allies.

A documentary short examines the varied activities in the life of an average working man's family in the German industrial city of Essen after World War 2. A brilliant look at the 1950's life in Germany's Ruhr region.
The film explores the Maier family, father works in the steel plant, Mother stays at home and looks after the twin girls, son goes off to school. It offers richly interesting tidbits (milk break in school for those who pay for it, Essen is a town that's just covered in smoke all day, etc.) and tends not to delv...

Revision Notes:
- German gov bankrupt cuz it spent all its gold reserves in the war
- Treaty of versailles exacerbated this
- it took away wealth earning areas such as the coalfields in Silesia
- made the Gov pay reparations
- German Gov asked for reductions to reparations, but was refused as countries like France needed the money to pay off their debts to the USA
- by 1923, it could no longer pay reparations
- December 1922 Germany failed to send coal to France from the Ruhr coalfields like they had agreed to do
- Jan 1923, France then sent troops into the industrial area of the Ruhr
- they confiscated raw materials, manufactured goods and industrial machinery
- the German gov urged passive resistance- going on strike and sabotage
- the French then arrested those who obstructed them and brought in their own workers
- germans resented the French but also many saw it as a failing of the weimar gov to resist the French
- realistically the weimar gov had no choice- 750 000 in the French army, German army now limited to 100 000
- crippled germany
- ruhr contained lots of factories and about 80% of German coal, iron and steel reserves
- increased Germany’s debts
- increased unemployment
- worsened the shortage of goods
- eventually came to an end when stresemann called off passive resistance in the ruhr, accepting the Dawes plan in 1924 & the French agreed to leave
- they actually left in 1925

A documentary short examines the varied activities in the life of an average working man's family in the German industrial city of Essen after World War 2. A brilliant look at the 1950's life in Germany's Ruhr region.
The film explores the Maier family, father works in the steel plant, Mother stays at home and looks after the twin girls, son goes off to school. It offers richly interesting tidbits (milk break in school for those who pay for it, Essen is a town that's just covered in smoke all day, etc.) and tends not to delve into political matters. And watch out for the little "Karl Albrecht" corner shop at 7:23, it is now known as the discount supermarket chain "Aldi".
About the Ruhr region in Germany:
The Ruhr (German: Ruhrgebiet), or the Ruhr district, Ruhr region or Ruhr valley, is a polycentric urban area in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. With a population density of 2,800/km² and a population of eight and a half million, it is the largest urban agglomeration in Germany. It consists of several large, industrial cities bordered by the rivers Ruhr to the south, Rhine to the west, and Lippe to the north. In the southwest it borders the Bergisches Land. It is considered part of the larger Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region of more than 12 million people, which is among the largest in Europe.
From west to east, the region includes the cities of Duisburg, Oberhausen, Bottrop, Mülheim an der Ruhr, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Herne, Hagen, Dortmund, and Hamm, as well as parts of the more "rural" districts of Wesel, Recklinghausen, Unna and Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis. The most populous cities are Dortmund (approx. 572,000), Essen (approx. 566,000) and Duisburg (approx. 486,000). The Ruhr area has no administrative center; each city in the area has its own administration, although there exists the supracommunal "Regionalverband Ruhr" institution in Essen. Historically, the western Ruhr towns, such as Duisburg and Essen, belonged to the historic region of the Rhineland, whereas the eastern part of the Ruhr, including Gelsenkirchen, Bochum, Dortmund and Hamm, were part of the region of Westphalia. Since the 19th century, these districts have grown together into a large complex with a vast industrial landscape, inhabited by some 7.3 million people (including Düsseldorf and Wuppertal).
For 2010, the Ruhr region was one of the European Capitals of Culture.

The green side of Germany's Ruhr Area
This is my first international travel vlog in English language - and it's quite special, because I'll show you one of my favorite places in my home country. Long time ago the Ruhr Area was the most important place for Germany's coal industry. But this region also has a very green side - a side many people don't know, even if they live here. In this video I'd like to show you the beautiful nature of Germany's Ruhr Valley.

I am starting this cycling tour close to the Ringbrücke bridge in Kettwig then taking a not very complex route along the Ruhr river until I reach Essen Werden. I hope you can relax and enjoy this beautiful view in June 2020 on a early evening.

The Ruhr area was Germany's primary industrial area during the early- to mid-20th century. Most factories were located there. The occupation of the Ruhr from 1923-24 by French forces, due to the Weimar Republic's failure to continue paying reparations from World War I, provoked passive resistance, which saw production in the factories grind to a halt. As a result, the German hyperinflation crisis grew even worse. The Ruhr first passes the towns of Meschede, Arnsberg, Wickede, Fröndenberg, Holzwickede, Iserlohn, and Schwerte. Then the river marks the southern limit of the Ruhr area, passing Hagen, Dortmund, Herdecke, Wetter, Witten, Bochum, Hattingen, Essen, Mülheim, and Duisburg.

In this cycle tour along the Ruhr river in Western Germany, I am filming a panorama ride which covers some amazing sights of the Ruhr river from Essen Kettwig to Mülheim an der Ruhr. Come and enjoy this virtual cycling tour in 4K and view of the Ruhr river on a sunny spring day during the pandemic. I am starting this cycling tour close to the Ringbrücke bridge in Kettwig then taking a not very complex route along the Ruhr river until I reach Mülheim an der Ruhr. I hope you can relax and enjoy this beautiful ride in May 2020 on a early evening.
