The Lodge dates originally from the mid-seventeenth century, there being a house on the site by 1662. By 1750 the small Queen Anne style brick house was being used in conjunction with the adjacent dairy. By this time it was known variously as the Lower Lodge, to distinguish it from Cumberland Lodge, then known as the Great Lodge, or the Dairy Lodge.
From the mid-eighteenth century it was home to the military topographer and artist Thomas Sandby (brother of the better known Paul), as Deputy Ranger of the Great Park. The house was then known as the Deputy Ranger's House.
It was enlarged by 1792, and was the home of Joseph Frost, the Park Bailiff, and then of the General Superintendent of Farms, after Sandby's death.
The Royal Lodge Stakes is a Group 2flathorse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old colts and geldings. It is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket over a distance of 1 mile (1,609 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late September.
History
The event was established in 1946, and it was originally held at Ascot. It is named after Royal Lodge, a royal residence located in Windsor Great Park. It was initially contested over 5 furlongs and open to horses of either gender. It was extended to a mile in 1948, and restricted to colts and geldings in 1987.
The race was first staged at Newmarket in 2005, when Ascot was closed for redevelopment. It was transferred more permanently in 2011.
The Royal Lodge Stakes is sometimes included in the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, with the winner earning an automatic invitation to compete in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf. Its latest period of inclusion began in 2012.
The race is currently held on the final day of Newmarket's three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting, the same day as the Cambridgeshire Handicap.
Game, set & match to Wimbledon Hawkeye in Royal Lodge
Wimbledon Hawkeye served it up to his rivals to land the Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket.
The Kameko colt, who is trained by James Owen and owned by the Gredley Family, had impressed when second to The Lion In Winter in the Acomb at York and was a 4-1 chance under James Doyle for the Group Two.
After a nice passage throughout the mile contest, he began to stride clear of the field ahead of the final furlong and came home a length and a half ahead of runner-up Royal Playwright.
Wimbledon Hawkeye is 25-1 for the 2000 Guineas with Coral, who trimmed The Lion In Winter to 9-2 from 5-1 favourite for Classic glory.
Owen, who only began training Flat horses in January, said: “He’s got stronger all year and has improved with every run – I’ve learned at a little bit slower rate than h...

Entering the mile Group Two prize on the back of victories at the July Course and last time out at Ascot the son of Invincible Spirit added to those successes when taking both a step up in class and trip in his stride.

Owen, who only began training Flat horses in January, said: “He’s got stronger all year and has improved with every run – I’ve learned at a little bit slower rate than he has!
“Life’s great, I’m really enjoying it and I can’t thank the Gredley family and my other owners enough, horses like this make it all worthwhile. He’s a horse to dream of.
“You’d have to be thinking of the Guineas; a mile is fine, he handles the track well and for me he’s a proper Guineas prospect. Whether he runs again this season, I don’t see why not, we’ll see how he is.
“He’s in the Futurity at Doncaster, which is a possibility, or we could look to the Breeders’ Cup.
“Whether he’d run in a trial, I don’t know – I only had my first runner on the Flat in January, so I’m learning as I go.
“He was quick out of the gate, travelled well, I thought for a minute he was going to over-race, but he was strong through the last furlong.”
Owner Tim Gredley said: “I’d have thought America was unlikely but we really hoped today would happen.
“We’ve always believed in him, there was more growing in him and hopefully he will develop into a Derby horse.”
