Topography is the study of the shape and features of the surface of the Earth and other observable astronomical objects including planets, moons, and asteroids. The topography of an area could refer to the surface shapes and features themselves, or a description (especially their depiction in maps).
This field of geoscience and planetary science is concerned with local detail in general, including not only relief but also natural and artificial features, and even local history and culture. This meaning is less common in the United States, where topographic maps with elevation contours have made "topography" synonymous with relief. The older sense of topography as the study of place still has currency in Europe.
Topography in a narrow sense involves the recording of relief or terrain, the three-dimensional quality of the surface, and the identification of specific landforms. This is also known as geomorphometry. In modern usage, this involves generation of elevation data in digital form (DEM). It is often considered to include the graphic representation of the landform on a map by a variety of techniques, including contour lines, hypsometric tints, and relief shading.
Topography, the study of the current terrain features of a region and the graphic representation of the landform on a map
Inverted topography, landscape features that have reversed their elevation relative to other features
Karst topography, a three-dimensional landscape shaped by the dissolution of a soluble layer or layers of bedrock, usually carbonate rock such as limestone or dolomite
Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, a research effort that obtained digital elevation models on a near-global scale from 56°S to 60°N, to generate the most complete high-resolution digital topographic database of Earth to date
Topographic prominence, a concept used in the categorization of hills and mountains, also known as peaks
Topography as the study of place, distinguished from the above by focusing not on the physical shape of the surface, but on all details that distinguish a place. Includes both textual and graphic descriptions.
Topographic maps are a little different from your average map. Once you get the hang of reading them, they help you visualize three-dimensional terrain from a flat piece of paper. Find out what you need to know in this REI Expert Advice Video.

Understanding Topographic Maps
In this video we begin by looking at a topographic map of Pikes Peak in Colorado. I then build a clay model of a mountain and create cross sections representing different elevation layers. Using these layers we trace out the contour lines of the mountain to show how a three dimensional image of a landform can be mapped out on a topographic map.

What is a Topographic Survey?
https://retipster.com/terms/topographic-survey/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=terms&utm_content=RvKI5IlAA2M
Topographic surveys are trigonometrically calculated, map-based representations of the earth. The calculations are done by a surveyor to give an approximation of the earth's surface. These surveys provide basic information for land planning, development, and infrastructure construction.
The surveyor calculates the elevations in relation to a selected datum or datums (mean sea level) and their position on the earth's surface. The topographic survey is a three-dimensional graphical representation of the features and elevations of a parcel of land.
