Who was Roland Garros?
Who was Roland Garros and how did a Grand Slam come to be named after a wartime aviator?
Athlete. Pioneer. War hero. The life of Roland Garros – the man after whom the French Open venue is named – reads like a storybook.
Born in 1888, on the Indian Ocean island of Reunion, Garros was educated in Paris and after graduating from the HEC business school, started a car dealership. But in 1909, a visit to an aviation festival in Reims – which celebrated the relatively new phenomenon of motorised flight – would change the course of his life. It began a love affair with the air – but would result in his untimely death.

Roland Garros Tournament was not named after the aviator #shorts #wwi #tennis
Roland Garros was not a tennis player himself. He was an aviator and a pioneer in the field of aviation. He is perhaps best known for making the first flight across the Mediterranean Sea from France to Tunisia in 1913. He was also a fighter pilot during World War I and was credited with shooting down several German aircraft before he was shot down and killed in 1918. The French Open tennis tournament, which takes place annually in Paris, is named after the stadium where it is held, which itself is named after Roland Garros in honour of his contributions to aviation. the stadium itself was built on the site where Garros landed after his historic flight across the Mediterranean.

Eugène Adrien Roland Georges Garros (; 6 October 1888 – 5 October 1918) was a French pioneering aviator and fighter pilot during World War I and early days of aviation.
Eugène Adrien Roland Georges Garros was born in Saint-Denis, Réunion, and studied at the Lycée Janson de Sailly and HEC Paris. He started his aviation career in 1909 flying a Demoiselle (Dragonfly) monoplane, an aircraft that only flew well with a small lightweight pilot. He gained Ae.C.F. licence no. 147 in July 1910. In 1911 Garros graduated to flying Blériot monoplanes and entered a number of European air races with this type of machine, including the 1911 Paris to Madrid air race and the Circuit of Europe (Paris-London-Paris), in which he came second.
On 4 September 1911, he set an altitude record of . The following year, on 6 September 1912, after Austrian aviator Philipp von Blaschke had flown to , he regained the height record by flying to .
By 1913 he had switched to flying the faster Morane-Saulnier monoplanes, and gained fame for making the first non-stop flight across the Mediterranean Sea from Fréjus in the south of France to Bizerte in Tunisia in a Morane-Saulnier G. The following year, Garros joined the French army at the outbreak of World War I.
Reports published in August 1914 claimed Garros was involved in the "first air battle in world history" and that he had flown his plane into a Zeppelin, destroying the airship and killing its pilots and himself. This story was quickly contradicted by reports that Garros was alive and well in Paris. Such early reports maintained that an un...
