S&H Green Stamps
That History Lady shares the history of trading stamps, those stamps that grocery stores and gas stations gave out as loyalty incentives. In the 1950s and 1960s, an estimated eighty percent of American households collected trading stamps. The biggest of them was Sperry and Hutchinson, better known as S&H Green Stamps. By 2000, trading stamps were virtually gone. Find out why these stamps were so wildly popular for a while -- and why they disappeared.

Whatever Happened to S&H Green Stamps?
The S & H Green Stamp was one of the originals trading stamps, and they were collected with great fervor by American families from the 1930s to the 1980s. The small green stamps known as the S & H green stamps originated in 1896 distributed by the Sperry & Hutchinson Company, hence the “S & H” title. The Green Stamps were apart of a rewards program meant to incentivize people to buy their stamps. The Green Stamps were one of the first loyalty programs. Retailers purchased the stamps from the Sperry & Hutchinson Company, and the retailer determined the value and sold them to shoppers. Shoppers would then choose who to shop with based on which retailer’s stamps were cheapest.

At one time, they boasted having sold more stamps than the U.S. Postal service. The S & H Green Stamps were found at grocery store checkouts, gas stations, department stores with denominations one, ten, and fifty points. The perforated stamps had a sticky back to be moistened (probably licked) and stuck to the saver book. which were provided with the stamps. These books were 24 pages long and each page held a value of fifty points.
Collecting the stamps included a rewards program. Parents and children bonded together collecting the booklets of green stamp books wrapped din rubber bands in order to trade them in for various items. Home goods like kitchenware, outdoor gear, and some small appliances could be redeemed from the Green Stamp catalog. Children could redeem the stamps, as well as other collectibles or toys. Many families said that it taught them saving and collaboration.
Business for the program declined heavily during the mid-60s and towards the 70s, with declines win the green stamps valued. In 1972, the Sperry & Hutchinson Company also faced a lawsuit for restricting the trade of stamps. According to the unfairness doctrine, the program violated this in their green stamps program.
After the online boom, the company started offering S&H Greenpoint's online for shopping at their online stores. The Greenpoint, however, could be redeemed at a few stores like the New Jersey and New York Foodtown stores.
In 2013, the founder and owner of Pet Promise and Greenopolic Recycling purchased the S & Hutchinson Company with plans to relaunch the classic program.

Today's Daily Dose short history film covers S&H Green Stamps, which comprised a retail incentive loyalty program allowing shoppers to buy consumer goods by collecting Green Stamps. The filmmaker has included the original voice over script to further assist your understanding:
Today on The Daily Dose, S&H Green Stamps.
Founded in 1896 by Thomas Sperry and Shelley Byron Hutchinson, S&H Green Stamps became the leading customer loyalty program in the United States, which reached its zenith during the consumer-driven 1960s, when the company issued more stamps per year than the U.S. Postal Service. Purchased by merchants such as department stores, gas stations and grocery stores, retailers handed out Green Stamps to customers at a rate determined by the merchant, based on a customer’s total dollar purchase. Issued in denominations of one, ten and fifty points, shoppers licked and stamped them onto 24-page collector books issued for free by S&H, each page holding a total of 50 points, while a completed collector book contained 1,200 Green Stamp points.
Once a shopper had amassed enough Green Stamps, they could either shop the free S&H Idea Book—as many as 35 million books distributed each year during the 1960s—or visit a local Green Stamp store to shop for dish ware, home appliances, toys and sporting goods, jewelry and more. A 1963 magazine article wrote that the average retailer paid $2.45—some $23.00 in today’s currency—for enough stamps to fill a collector book, while many shoppers consciously choose one retailer over another based on how many stamps a merchant gave out for each dollar spent. Over the years, as S&H Green Stamps reached their market high, competitive loyalty programs tried to penetrate the S&H monopoly, including Greenbax Stamps, Gold Bond Stamps and Blue Chip Stamps, yet none could compete with Green Stamps’ entrenched dominance in the U.S. market.
By 1972, however, S&H Green Stamps began its precipitous decline, thanks in part to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling proclaiming that S&H Green Stamps Co violated the unfairness doctrine of the Federal Trade Commission by restricting the trade of Green Stamps to a select group of retailers, leading to a steady decline in business until the company’s 1981 sale to Baldwin United, followed by its 1999 purchase by Leucadia National, which was a holding company established by a member of the Sperry family. After the explosive rise of Internet e-commerce, Leucadia National announced that S&H Green Stamps no longer held value and could no longer be redeemed, while the company’s corporate shell was purchased in 2013 by Bubba Gump Shrimp Company founder, Anthony Zolezzi, who plans to relaunch the company using a new business model, making S&H Green Stamps, a bygone memory for senior Americans everywhere.
And there you have it, S&H Green Stamps, today on The Daily Dose.
