Roger Chapman (born Roger Maxwell Chapman on 8 April 1942 in Leicester), also known as Chappo, is an English rock vocalist. He is best known as a member of the progressive rock band Family, which he joined along with Charlie Whitney, in 1966 and also the rock, R&B band Streetwalkers formed in 1974. His idiosyncratic brand of showmanship when performing and vocal vibrato led him to become a cult figure on the British rock scene. Chapman is claimed to have said that he was trying to sing like both Little Richard and his idol Ray Charles. Since the early 1980s he has spent much of his time in Germany and has made occasional appearances there and elsewhere.
He was awarded an Artist of the Year award in 1980 for his vocals on Mike Oldfield's song "Shadow on the wall". In 2004 he was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award.
History
Chapman was originally the vocalist for Farinas, who released the single "You'd Better Stop" b/w "I like it like that" in August 1964. (However, lead vocals on that single were performed by Jim King.) He moved on to join The Roaring Sixties and were later renamed Family in 1966. In 1967 the first single was released, "Scene Through The Eye of a Lens", something of a psychedelic classic. Chapman wrote most of Family's songs with Charlie Whitney and their debut album Music in a Doll's House was released in 1968. Their bluesy, experimental rock music gained them a reputation as a progressive underground band.
The rescue of Roger Mallinson and Roger Chapman occurred between 29 August and 1 September, 1973 after their Vickers Oceanics' small submersiblePisces III was trapped on the seabed at a depth of 1,575ft (480m), 150mi (240km) off Ireland in the Irish Sea. The 76-hour multinational rescue effort resulted in the deepest sub rescue in history.
The submersible and the men
The Canadian commercial submersible Pisces III measured (20ft (6m) long by 7ft (2m) wide by 11ft (3m) high. It was built by International Hydrodynamics of North Vancouver, British Columbia, and had been launched in 1969. Pisces III originally had tail fins, which were removed when the submersible was purchased by Vickers Oceanics. If the fins had been retained, they would have prevented the entanglement of the towline on the craft's machinery sphere which caused the 1973 accident.
Pisces III had sunk once before, during trials in Vancouver Bay in 1971. Peter Messervy of Vickers Oceanics, who would lead the rescue team after the 1973 accident, was one of the pilots who were rescued by the Canadian Defense Ministry submersible SDL-1.
Chapman was born in Nakuru, Kenya. He won the English Amateur in 1979 and represented Great Britain & Ireland in the 1981 Walker Cup, beating Hal Sutton twice in one day.
Chapman turned professional later that year and won a European Tour card on his first visit to the Qualifying School. He finished in the top 100 on the European Order of Merit 19 years out of 21 from 1982 to 2002, with a best ranking of 17th in 1988. After six second-place finishes on the tour, he finally won the 2000 Brazil Rio de Janeiro 500 Years Open on his 472nd tour start. He also won the 1988 Zimbabwe Open on the Sunshine Tour. Chapman won the Hassan II Golf Trophy in Morocco in 2000.
