Daniel Ellsberg in conversation with Robert Scheer at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing his book, "The Doomsday Machine: Confessions of a Nuclear War Planner."
This is a video of part of the conversation that took place on December 13, 2017.
In 1961, Daniel Ellsberg, a consultant to the Department of Defense and the White House, drafted Secretary Robert McNamara’s plans for nuclear war. Later he leaked the Pentagon Papers. He lectures and writes on the dangers of the nuclear era and the need for whistle-blowing. A Senior Fellow of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, Ellsberg is the author of Secrets and the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary The Most Dangerous Man in America. He is also a key figure in Steven Spielberg’s film about the Pentagon Papers, "The Post," which was released in December 2017.
In his book former high level defense analyst Daniel Ellsberg reveals his shocking first-hand account of America’s nuclear program in the 1960s. From the remotest air bases in the Pacific Command, where he discovered that the authority to initiate use of nuclear weapons was widely delegated, to the secret plans for general nuclear war under Eisenhower, which, if executed, would cause the near-extinction of humanity, Ellsberg shows that the legacy of this most dangerous arms buildup in the history of civilization–and its proposed renewal under the Trump administration–threatens our very survival. No other insider with high level access has written so candidly of the nuclear strategy of the late Eisenhower and early Kennedy years, and nothing has fundamentally changed since that era.
Framed as a memoir–a chronicle of madness in which Ellsberg acknowledges participating–this gripping expose reads like a thriller and offers feasible steps we can take to dismantle the existing “doomsday machine” and avoid nuclear catastrophe, returning Ellsberg to his role as whistleblower. The Doomsday Machine is thus a real-life Dr. Strangelove story and an ultimately hopeful–and powerfully important–book about not just our country, but the future of the world.
Robert Scheer is a journalist with over 30 years experience. His columns have appeared in newspapers across the country. Between 1964 and 1969, he was Vietnam correspondent, managing editor and editor in chief of RAMPARTS magazine. From 1976 to 1993, he served as a national correspondent for the LOS ANGELES TIMES, where he wrote articles on such diverse topics as the Soviet Union, arms control, national politics and the military. He is currently a columnist for THE SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, as well as a contributing editor for THE NATION magazine.
Scheer has interviewed every president from Richard Nixon on through Bill Clinton. He conducted the famous 1976 PLAYBOY interview with Jimmy Carter, in which the then-presidential candidate admitted to have lusted in his heart. Scheer has written six books including THINKING TUNA FISH, TALKING DEATH: ESSAYS ON THE PORNOGRAPHY OF POWER; WITH ENOUGH SHOVELS: REAGAN, BUSH AND NUCLEAR WAR and AMERICA AFTER NIXON: THE AGE OF MULTINATIONALS.
