Robert Reed (October 19, 1932 – May 12, 1992) was an American stage, film, and television actor, and television director.
From 1961 to 1965, he portrayed Kenneth Preston on the popular legal drama, The Defenders, alongside E. G. Marshall. He is best known as the father Mike Brady, opposite Florence Henderson's Carol Brady, on the ABC sitcom The Brady Bunch, which aired from 1969 to 1974. He reprised the role of Mike Brady in later reunion programs. In 1976, he earned two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for his guest-starring role in a two-part episode of Medical Center and for his work on the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man. The following year, Reed earned a third Emmy nomination for his role in the miniseries Roots.
Early life
Reed was born John Robert Rietz, Jr., in the northern Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Illinois. He was the only child of Helen (née Teaverbaugh) and John Robert Rietz, Sr., who were high school sweethearts and married at 18. Reed attended the West Division School in Community Consolidated School District 62 until 1939. His father worked for the government, and his mother was a homemaker. Reed spent his later childhood years in Muskogee, Oklahoma, as well as Navasota, Texas. In Oklahoma, his father, John Sr., worked as a turkey and cattle farmer.
"I don't know if I am simply anything, but I have never felt drawn up into any sub-field or splinter genre. Not a good strategy for a career, I think."
"Before I was reading science fiction, I read Hemingway. Farewell to Arms was my first adult novel that said not everything ends well. It was one of those times where reading has meant a great deal to me, in terms of my development - an insight came from that book."
"I've always thought of science fiction as being, at some level, a 19th-century business."
"Unlike almost every other novel, I wrote Larks for myself, meaning that it was essentially done when I first showed it to an editor."
"The old restaurant, College Street Station, was really here to serve the hotel guests, and it wasn't making money. Last year, at the end of July, we lost money."
"We are drawing a more eclectic crowd now."
"We are of course working on the environmental side of things but right now we are still concentrating on search-and-rescue missions to save as many lives as possible on land,"
"They've worked incredibly well for us, and we're the second densest city in the country behind New York."
"We have confirmed at least 20 rigs or platforms missing, either sunk or adrift, and one confirmed fire where a rig was,"
"It bore absolutely no resemblance to the 'rude cabin' described by racial detractors, ... and was surrounded by a bake house, a milk house, a smokehouse, a chicken house with '44 big hens,' a workhouse, a cow house, and a barn that housed '30 big horned beasts.'"

To those that he knew and loved, he was one of the most beloved friends that anyone could ever ask for. To the co-stars, he was very much so like a father figure. But while he had a full heart, he also had quite an anger problem. He would routinely get involved in fiery arguments and fights. It was almost like he had no control over his temper. The smallest thing could set him off.
One contributing factor that played into his anger issues was his alcoholism. He couldn't stay away from the bottle and was drunk on set more often than not. Reed was also a closeted homosexual at a time in history when being gay was not widely accepted by society. Keeping that part of his life secret was very damaging to his spirit. One can only speculate what his life would have been like if he could have been true to who he was.

John Travolta was a rising star at the time that he was cast in The Boy in the Plastic Bubble. The filming of the made-for-television feature had to take into account the actor’s busy schedule, which also included filming Welcome Back, Kotter. All in all, there were only 17 days when John was available to shoot the feature. Meanwhile, the rest of the performers involved in the production had much more availability. One such performer was Robert Reed. Robert had plenty of availability, but he also had a bad attitude about not being as in demand of a performer as John. Because of this, Robert developed a negative attitude toward the set of the picture.
Things got so bad that Robert Reed stormed into his dressing room on one occasion. On this occasion, casting director Joel Thurm followed him. Joel allegedly offered to give Robert a back rub in order to calm him down. Robert accepted the offer, but the backrub soon turned into more. Today, Robert still has negative feelings about this incident involving Robert Reed, and he also has some other interesting stories about his time as a casting director. Join Facts Verse as we explore why Robert Reed was miserable working with John Travolta.
