Nisbet was born in Los Angeles in 1913. He was raised with his three brothers and one sister in the small California community of Maricopa, where his father managed a lumber yard. His studies at Berkeley culminated in a Ph.D. in sociology in 1939. His thesis was supervised by Frederick J. Teggart. At Berkeley, "Nisbet found a powerful defense of intermediate institutions in the conservative thought of 19th-century Europe. Nisbet saw in thinkers like Edmund Burke and Alexis de Tocqueville—then all but unknown in American scholarship—an argument on behalf of what he called 'conservative pluralism.'" He joined the faculty there in 1939.
After serving in the US Army during World War II, when he was stationed on Saipan in the Pacific theatre, Nisbet founded the Department of Sociology at Berkeley, and was briefly Chairman. Nisbet left an embroiled Berkeley in 1953 to become a dean at the University of California, Riverside, and later a Vice-Chancellor. Nisbet remained in the University of California system until 1972, when he left for the University of Arizona at Tucson. Soon thereafter, he was appointed to the prestigious Albert Schweitzer Chair at Columbia.
His parents were Henry Nisbet and Tamar Williamson. Henry was born in 1807 on the northernmost Shetland island of Unst. Tamar was born in 1808 at Houlland on the island of Yell, Shetland.
Nisbet's career commenced at about the age of 17 in 1851. After sailing a year on the Active (63 gross tons) in the Shetland islands packet trade, he travelled south in 1852 and joined the collier (ship)Friendship of Kingston upon Hull (Hull) under Captain Weldon. The Friendship was engaged in Firth of Forth and London trade. For eighteen months Nisbet was employed aboard the Friendship, until she was wrecked without loss of life off Bridlington, Yorkshire.
In the first two or three years of Nisbet's career, all the coasting trade was done by sailing ships. When he was in the colliers between Leith and London, there was only one steamboat – the Prompt – which plied between these two ports.
Robert Nisbet (born 1968), is Europe Correspondent for Sky News, the 24-hour television news service operated by Sky Television, part of British Sky Broadcasting. He is based in the city of Brussels in Belgium. He was formerly a programme presenter and correspondent for BBC News, presenting the Liquid News programme on the-then BBC News 24 channel (now BBC News Channel) and Entertainment Correspondent for the BBC Six O'Clock News (now BBC News at 6). He became Sky News' Europe Correspondent in September 2011.
Nisbet spent several years at the BBC, mainly as a correspondent for BBC News, however also as chief reporter on BBC Choice's entertainment news show Liquid News. It was Nisbet who discovered the body of presenter Christopher Price, after he died from a rare brain infection in 2002. Following the end of Liquid News, Nisbet went on to present The Morning Show, a short-lived daytime show on BBC One with the Pop Idol judge Nicki Chapman, in 2003, although this was cancelled after poor viewing figures.
