Tucson’s unique blend of Native American, Spanish, Mexican, and American influences is evident in its architecture, cuisine, and cultural events, making it a fascinating destination for residents and tourists alike.
The history of Tucson stretches back thousands of years, with the original inhabitants being Native American peoples such as the Hohokam. These indigenous communities left a lasting legacy, including sophisticated irrigation canals that are still marveled at today. The city itself was officially founded in 1775 by Spanish soldiers, making it one of the oldest continually inhabited areas in the United States.
Through the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, Tucson came under American control and quickly became a hub of activity. It saw the coming of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, which further spurred its growth. Throughout the 20th century, Tucson expanded rapidly, with its economy diversifying and its population booming. Today, it is a vibrant city that celebrates its rich history with events like the annual Tucson Rodeo, La Fiesta de los Vaqueros, and the All Souls Procession, a unique take on the Day of the Dead traditions.
Tourism remains a robust economic driver, with visitors drawn to the city's resorts, golf courses, and renowned attractions like the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum and Saguaro National Park.
Tucson consistently ranks as one of the more affordable cities in the United States. The cost of living is relatively low when compared to other metropolitan areas, particularly housing costs. According to real estate data, the median home price in Tucson is considerably lower than the national average, making homeownership accessible for many residents. Tucson's median home price is about 475 thousand dollars while median rent is about fourteen hundred a month.

Major incorporated suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, Sahuarita south of the city, and South Tucson in an enclave south of downtown. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson (some within or overlapping the city limits) include Casas Adobes, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Midvale Park, Tanque Verde, Tortolita, and Vail. Towns outside the Tucson metro area include Benson to the southeast, Catalina and Oracle to the north, and Green Valley to the south.
Tucson was founded as a military fort by the Spanish when Hugo O'Conor authorized the construction of Presidio San Agustín del Tucsón in 1775. It was included in the state of Sonora after Mexico gained independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821. In 1853, the United States acquired a 29,670 square miles (76,840 km2) region of present-day southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico from Mexico under the Gadsden Purchase. Tucson served as the capital of the Arizona Territory from 1867 to 1877. Tucson was Arizona's largest city by population during the territorial period and early statehood, until it was surpassed by Phoenix by 1920. Nevertheless, population growth remained strong during the late 20th century. In 2017, Tucson was the first American city to be designated a "City of Gastronomy" by UNESCO.
Tucson is sometimes referred to as "The Old Pueblo".
Downtown and Central Tucson
A 19th-century adobe house in the Armory Park neighborhood
Similar to many other cities in the Western U.S., Tucson was developed by European Americans on a grid plan starting in the late 19th century, with the city center at Stone Avenue and Broadway Boulevard. While this intersection was initially near the geographic center of Tucson, that center has shifted as the city has expanded far to the east. Development to the west was effectively blocked by the Tucson Mountains. Covering a large geographic area, Tucson has many distinct neighborhoods.
Tucson's earliest neighborhoods, some of which were redeveloped and covered by the Tucson Convention Center (TCC), include:
El Presidio, Tucson's oldest neighborhood
Barrio Histórico, also known as Barrio Libre
Armory Park, directly south of downtown
Barrio Anita, named for an early settler and located between Granada Avenue and Interstate 10
Barrio Tiburón, now known as the Fourth Avenue arts district, was designated in territorial times as a red-light district
Barrio El Jardín, named for an early recreational site, Levin's Gardens
Barrio El Hoyo, named for a lake that was part of the gardens. Before the convention center was built, the term El Hoyo (Spanish for 'pit' or 'hole') referred to this part of the city. Residents were mostly Mexican-American citizens and Mexican immigrants.
Barrio Santa Rosa, dating from the 1890s, is now listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places.
