The River Clun is a river mostly in Shropshire, England which runs through the small town of Clun, as well as through or near a number of other villages situated along its valley. It discharges into the River Teme at Leintwardine, Herefordshire. The Clun Valley is very rural and is part of the Shropshire Hills AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).
Course
The source of the River Clun is near the hamlet of Anchor (in the marshy area by the public house there), very close to the Welsh border. It then flows east until the Aston on Clun area (it does not actually run through the village), where it then flows roughly in a southern direction — the river flows around the north end of Clunbury Hill. After this change in direction it enters the lower valley — the valley widens and has a flatter floor (an extensive flood plain).
The Folly Brook joins the Clun at Newcastle, then the small River Unk flows into the Clun near Clun Castle, whilst the small River Kemp flows into the river at Oaker near Aston. Near the end of the river's course, the River Redlake joins at Jay.
Clun takes its name from the river upon which it stands. Deriving from an earlier Colun, it shares its very early British root with the two rivers Colne, in Lancashire and Essex, each of which has a town of the same name on its banks.
Clun grew up around the site of the later Saxon church towards the end of the 7th century AD. However, in the surrounding area there was a scattered population at least as early as the Neolithic period, about 5000 years ago. Clun was on the historic drove road where flocks and herds were driven from Wales to the markets in the Midlands and London. At the time of the Norman Conquest Clun formed part of the extensive lands of Eadric The Wild, who led a revolt against King William I, whereon his lands were confiscated and given to Roger de Montgomery who was created Earl of Shrewsbury. Roger in turn granted 27 manors, of which Clun was the largest, to Robert (or "Picot") de Say. These lands constituted a single Marcher Lordship which became known as the Barony of Clun. The present holder of the title is the Duke of Norfolk. The early Lords of Clun had the power to carry out the death penalty, and one William Kempe held his house by the service of carrying to Shrewsbury the heads of felons executed at Clun.
The county's population and economy is centred on five towns: the county town of Shrewsbury, which is culturally and historically important and is located close to the centre of the county;Telford, a new town in the east which was constructed around a number of older towns, most notably Wellington, Dawley and Madeley, which is today the most populous; and Oswestry in the north-west, Bridgnorth just to the south of Telford, and Ludlow in the south. The county has many market towns, including Whitchurch in the north, Newport north-east of Telford and Market Drayton in the north-east of the county.
The Shropshire breed of domestic sheep originated from the hills of Shropshire, and North Staffordshire, England, during the 1840s. The breeders in the area used the local horned black-faced sheep and crossed them with a few breeds of white-faced sheep (Southdown, Cotswold, and Leicester). This produced a medium-sized polled (hornless) sheep that produced good wool and meat. In 1855 the first Shropshires were imported into the United States (Virginia). This breed is raised primarily for meat.
1800s
In 1859 the breed was officially recognized by the Royal Agricultural Society as being a distinct breed. The popularity of the Shropshire breed grew rapidly in England, and in 1882 Shropshire breeders founded the Shropshire Sheep Breeders' Association and Flock Book Society, the world's first such society for sheep. The same year the Society published the first Flock Book, a record of sheep bred and their breeders. The Society still survives, and still publishes a Flock Book annually.
Clun is the smallest town in Shropshire and the only one not to have railway line or station, or so I read It has a castle, a 14th century pack horse bridge and a host of fabulous historic houses. I walk around the town to explore it.

Great Western Castle Centenary Special - 7029 Clun Castle doing 100mph!
With 2023 celebrating 100 years since the launch of the famous Great Western Castle Class, I thought what better way to start the celebrations than by showing you what a Castle would have been like doing 100mphehich in the heyday they achieved. 7029 Clun Castle blitzes through Swindon on the Fast Line - Return to Steam Celebration - 11/06/2022
This run was pretty special as fifty years ago to the day, 7029 Clun Castle was in charge of the first public steam excursion on British Rail back in 1972 with a trip between Birmingham and Didcot when the steam ban was rescinded. A historic trip, not just for passengers but for the hardcore enthusiasts like myself, and it was definitely not to be missed.
After much deliberation, I decided not to film the outward leg as the weather was a bit cloudy, but also on the return journey, I had a dream of mine to film a Great Western Castle running nonstop at speed through Swindon. The dream finally came true and this shot that you will be about to see was so good that it was worth having just one shot. Clun Castle. The dramatic riverside ruins and extensive earthworks of this Welsh border castle sit high on a rocky mound on the edge of the small, picturesque town of the same name.
Unusually, the castle's tall 13th century keep is set on the side of its mound. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest, the castle and nearby settlement prospered until the early 15th century, when followers of the Welsh chieftain Owain Glyn Dwr devastated the surrounding area.
Lake Vyrnwy is a reservoir in Powys, Wales, built in the 1880s for Liverpool Corporation Waterworks to supply Liverpool with fresh water. It flooded the head of the Vyrnwy valley and submerged the village of Llanwddyn.
The Lake Vyrnwy Nature Reserve and Estate that surrounds the lake is jointly managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and Hafren Dyfrdwy and is a popular destination for ornithologists, cyclists and hikers. The reserve is designated as a national nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation.

The engine was slightly late but due to other trains being nowhere near The Castle she got the path to run at full pet through Swindon on the fast line. The engine can be seen thundering past the old Great Western Works at Swindon Works before powering and whistling through the iconic Swindon in the beautiful evening sunshine. Although not perfect, it was still an incredible performance from Clun Castle and her crew and also for Network Rail to run her nonstop at speed without interfering with other trains.

The reserve is designated as a national nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Protection Area, and a Special Area of Conservation.

As you can tell it was a bit windy, but unfortunately my microphone died which meant I had to use the internal mic on my camcorder, so apologies if you didn't like the wind interference, but there was nothing I could have done about it.
I really hope you enjoyed the video. Feel free to leave a like, comment, and subscribe for more steam action from Full Steam Ahead.
After an absence of nearly 16 years, 7029 'Clun Castle' returned to steam and was unveiled to the public at Tyseley. Alongside her stablemates, it proved to be a day to remember.
Originally built in the 11th Century Clun Castle was built to defend against the attacks of the Welsh Army. Many people have reported seeing the ghosts of soldiers and knights that still defend the castle as well as many unexplained sounds. We get some amazing responses at this very scary location.
I apologise that the sound only comes out of the left channel!
Clun Castle lies buried deep in the south Shropshire Hills surrounded by the river of the same name and the smallest of the counties towns. I am out exploring the remains of the castle on a bleak October morning.

In the final video from our visit to Shropshire, we visited Clun Castle. Clun Castle is a remarkable fortification in Shropshire in the tranquil and beautiful English countryside town of Clun. Today it is left in a ruined state, and is abandoned currently left alone by English Heritage which looks after the castle. A castle here has stood since the days of the Norman Invasion under William the Conqueror. However today, Clun Castle is completely abandoned and ruined and is left in a derelict fashion. It's extremely unique in the fact that it has two mottes and baileys. Walking around Clun, you can really picture what this castle would have looked like. So join us, as we delve into the history of Clun Castle, featuring rich and powerful Medieval families, Tudor ruins and the English Civil War. 'England's Abandoned Castle, Clun Castle.'
