Right of self-defense
The right of self-defense (also called, when it applies to the defense of another, alter ego defense, defense of others, defense of a third person) is the right for persons to use reasonable force or defensive force, for the purpose of defending one's own life or the lives of others, including, in certain circumstances, the use of deadly force.
Theory
The early theories make no distinction between defense of the person and defense of property. Whether consciously or not, this builds on the Roman Law principle of dominium where any attack on the members of the family or the property it owned was a personal attack on the pater familias – the male head of the household, sole owner of all property belonging to the household, and endowed by law with dominion over all his descendants through the male line no matter their age. The right to self-defense is phrased as the principle of vim vi repellere licet ("it is permitted to repel force by force") in the Digest of Justitian (6th century).

Self-defense
Self-defense (self-defence in English spelling) is a countermeasure that involves defending the well-being of oneself or of another from harm. The use of the right of self-defense as a legal justification for the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions, but the interpretation varies widely.
Physical
Physical self-defense is the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of violence. Such force can be either armed or unarmed. In either case, the chances of success depend on a large number of parameters, related to the severity of the threat on one hand, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender.
Unarmed
Many styles of martial arts are practiced for self-defense or include self-defense techniques. Some styles train primarily for self-defense, while other martial or combat sports can be effectively applied for self-defense. Some martial arts train how to escape from a knife or gun situation, or how to break away from a punch, while others train how to attack. To provide more practical self-defense, many modern day martial arts schools now use a combination of martial arts styles and techniques, and will often customize self-defense training to suit the participants' lifestyles, occupations, age groups and gender, and physical and mental capabilities.

Self-defense (United States)
In the United States, self-defense is an affirmative defense that is used to justify the use of force by one person against another person under specific circumstances.
General rule
In the U.S., the general rule is that "[a] person is privileged to use such force as reasonably appears necessary to defend him or herself against an apparent threat of unlawful and immediate violence from another." In cases involving non-deadly force, this means that the person must reasonably believe that their use of force was necessary to prevent imminent, unlawful physical harm. When the use of deadly force is involved in a self-defense claim, the person must also reasonably believe that their use of deadly force is immediately necessary to prevent the other's infliction or great bodily harm or death. Most states no longer require a person to retreat before using deadly force. In the minority of jurisdictions which do require retreat, there is no obligation to retreat when it is unsafe to do so or when one is inside one's own home.

Self-defense (Sweden)
In Sweden, the law of self-defense (Swedish: nödvärn) allows a person attacked to excuse or justify a proportionate use of violence in defense of the person or property.
The law
Chapter 24 of the Swedish criminal code states various conditions for which a person will not be sentenced in court for committing an otherwise criminal act. Self-defense is considered grounds for non-conviction if the accused acted in a situation of peril and acted in a manner that is not "blatantly unjustifiable" in relation to that which is defended.
A situation of peril is stated to exist if:
The interpretation of what is to be considered not "blatantly unjustifiable" is popularly expressed in Sweden as "that force which is required by the peril". In other words, the defending party may do whatever it takes so long as no alternative, less severe options are available (except fleeing the immediate area NJA 1969 p425, 1999 p460). The expression "blatantly unjustifiable" allows fairly generous tolerance towards the defending party.

States are not allowed to use military force to resolve their disputes, except in collective security cases authorized by the security council, and in self-defense cases.
To understand Self-defense, it's important first to define what an armed attack is?
Selfdefence is regulated under customary international law, as well as in the United Nations Charter. According to Article 51 of the Charter, countries have the right to use military force to defend themselves, if an armed attack occurs against them.
While The meaning of 'armed attack' is not defined in the charter, a State is allowed to respond with force against an armed attack, only when the attack is of significant gravity.
Therefore, If the attack is not severe, the defending State does not have the right to use armed force as an act of revenge, and must use peaceful methods.
For example, In the Nicaragua case between the USA and Nicaragua, Nicaragua claimed that the USA had supplied weapons and training, to a rebel group in order to attack Nicaragua's government.
The USA argued that it was acting in collective selfdefence, favoring Nicaragua's neighboring States, which Nicaragua had attacked.
The ICJ held that an armed attack did not occur, where logistical and financial support was provided to rebels by a third State, and therefore that self-defense can only be exercised, in response to an armed attack.
In a later case, the world court looked into the Oil Platforms dispute between Iran and the USA.
The case concerns the destruction of the Iranian oil production platforms in the Gulf by the American army, which interrupted the Iranian oil Production for several years.
The USA argued that, the American warships attacked Iranian commercial oil harbors, as it was acting in self defence, after Iran placed sea mines, and fired rockets against commercial vessels flying the American flag.
The world court was asked to decide, whether a single attack against a warship, amounts to an armed attack, and whether collective but minor incidents of armed force also amount to an armed attack.
In its decision, the ICJ recognized the possibility, that the mining of a single military vessel, might be enough to bring into play the inherent right of selfdefence.

On GZERO World, @Ian_Bremmer spoke with Iran’s Vice President of Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif on September 25, days before Nasrallah’s assassination and Iran’s missile response. Zarif, who served as Iran’s foreign minister until 2021, made it clear that Tehran had a right to defend itself and warned Iran could respond to Israel at any time. Zarif said that Iran had, up to that point, shown restraint in order to avoid being “dragged” into a wider war, which he claimed would play into Israeli interests.
“[Israel] thrives on tension, on conflict, and we will not provide it to them,” Zarif said less than a week before Iran fired missiles into Israel’s territory, “But that doesn’t mean we will fail to defend our territory, our people, and our guests.”

Selfdefence and Use of Force in International Law, Visualized.
States are not allowed to use military force to resolve their disputes, except in collective security cases authorized by the security council, and in self-defense cases.
To understand Self-defense, it's important first to define what an armed attack is?
Selfdefence is regulated under customary international law, as well as in the United Nations Charter. According to Article 51 of the Charter, countries have the right to use military force to defend themselves, if an armed attack occurs against them.
While The meaning of 'armed attack' is not defined in the charter, a State is allowed to respond with force against an armed attack, only when the attack is of significant gravity.
Therefore, If the attack is not severe, the defending State does not have the right to use armed force as an act of revenge, and must use peaceful methods.
For example, In the Nicaragua case between the USA and Nicaragua, Nicaragua claimed that the USA had supplied weapons and training, to a rebel group in order to attack Nicaragua's government.
The USA argued that it was acting in collective selfdefence, favoring Nicaragua's neighboring States, which Nicaragua had attacked.
The ICJ held that an armed attack did not occur, where logistical and financial support was provided to rebels by a third State, and therefore that self-defense can only be exercised, in response to an armed attack.
In a later case, the world court looked into the Oil Platforms dispute between Iran and the USA.
The case concerns the destruction of the Iranian oil production platforms in the Gulf by the American army, which interrupted the Iranian oil Production for several years.
The USA argued that, the American warships attacked Iranian commercial oil harbors, as it was acting in self defence, after Iran placed sea mines, and fired rockets against commercial vessels flying the American flag.
The world court was asked to decide, whether a single attack against a warship, amounts to an armed attack, and whether collective but minor incidents of armed force also amount to an armed attack.
In its decision, the ICJ recognized the possibility, that the mining of a single military vessel, might be enough to bring into play the inherent right of selfdefence.

Iran launched a wave of ballistic missiles into Israel Tuesday night, calling the attack a response to Israel’s assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who was killed in Lebanon last week. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps also said the attack was retaliation for the killing of Hamas’s political leader, Ismael Haniyeh, assassinated while visiting Tehran last July, as well as Israel’s April attack on an Iranian embassy in Syria, which killed an Iranian commander.

On GZERO World, @Ian_Bremmer spoke with Iran’s Vice President of Strategic Affairs Mohammad Javad Zarif on September 25, days before Nasrallah’s assassination and Iran’s missile response. Zarif, who served as Iran’s foreign minister until 2021, made it clear that Tehran had a right to defend itself and warned Iran could respond to Israel at any time. Zarif said that Iran had, up to that point, shown restraint in order to avoid being “dragged” into a wider war, which he claimed would play into Israeli interests.
“[Israel] thrives on tension, on conflict, and we will not provide it to them,” Zarif said less than a week before Iran fired missiles into Israel’s territory, “But that doesn’t mean we will fail to defend our territory, our people, and our guests.”

Right of self-defense
The right of self-defense (also called, when it applies to the defense of another, alter ego defense, defense of others, defense of a third person) is the right for persons to use reasonable force or defensive force, for the purpose of defending one's own life or the lives of others, including, in certain circumstances, the use of deadly force.
Theory
The early theories make no distinction between defense of the person and defense of property. Whether consciously or not, this builds on the Roman Law principle of dominium where any attack on the members of the family or the property it owned was a personal attack on the pater familias – the male head of the household, sole owner of all property belonging to the household, and endowed by law with dominion over all his descendants through the male line no matter their age. The right to self-defense is phrased as the principle of vim vi repellere licet ("it is permitted to repel force by force") in the Digest of Justitian (6th century).
