The Red Hand of Ulster - An Lámh Dhearg! - The Irish Legend that Became History
An Lámh Dhearg, the red hand of Ulster, is a famous symbol of Northern Ireland. And it’d be hard to find a more dramatic object to put on a flag.
But the roots of the Hand are tied to a mysterious origin story that may go back as far as pagan times in Ireland.
The icon itself is quite literally a red hand, palm facing the viewer, fingers pointed upwards. Usually it is a right hand, but in some variations a left hand is used.
As a documented heraldic emblem, the red hand first appears in the 13th century. However, historians don't really know the exact origin or reasoning for how the symbol of the hand came to be. In this video, Erik recounts the history and the exciting legend of how the Red Hand of Ulster came to be.

14th September 1607: 'Flight of the Earls' sees Gaelic nobility leave Ulster in Ireland
The Battle of Kinsale in 1601 had seen the English emerge victorious in their conquest of Gaelic Ireland. Irish opposition was let by Hugh O’Neill, the Earl of Tyrone, and Rory O’Donnell, the Earl of Tyrconnell. They were prominent figures in Gaelic Ireland, but their positions were increasingly precarious due to encroaching English control and the rising tide of Protestantism.
After King James I and VI took the English throne in 1603, O’Neill and O’Donnell found themselves in a situation where they were allowed to keep their titles, but lost substantial areas of land to their neighbours and cousins. With their authority continuing to be eroded under pressure from the English authorities, O’Neill and O’Donnell chose to flee their homeland accompanied by a retinue of followers.

Prince Edward and Sophie, his wife, were granted new titles as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh earlier this year. As a result, their youngest child, James, who previously held the title of Viscount Severn, inherited his father's secondary title and is now referred to as the Earl of Wessex. James Wessex prepares for important year ahead as future generation of royals step up. Who is James, Earl of Wessex?
Although James has made public appearances at significant royal events recently, little is known about the 15-year-old who resides with his parents at Bagshot Park, a 17th-century estate near Windsor. He is currently 15th in line to the throne and is the youngest grandchild of the late Queen Elizabeth the Second.
He was born James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor in Surrey on December 17, 2007. At his birth, he held the eighth position in the line of succession, ahead of his older sister Lady Louise Windsor, who is now 19 years old. His father lovingly described him as "very cute and very cuddly" upon birth.
Over the weekend, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh made headlines as they attended the Easter Sunday church service in Windsor along with their 15-year-old son, James. It was an extraordinary moment for James as he made his public debut since being granted his new royal title. He has taken over his father Prince Edward's former title and is now known as the Earl of Wessex. Although his father's Duke of Edinburgh title will not be passed down to him, he is expected to become the Earl of Wessex and Forfar after the death of Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II.
James was born in 2007 and is now above his older sister, Lady Louise Windsor, in the line of succession due to the Succession to the Crown Act (2013). However, Lady Louise was not present at the Easter Sunday celebrations as she is currently studying at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. James appeared to take his new title in stride and joined his parents for the special occasion.
As James prepares to take on his new role as the Earl of Wessex, it will be fascinating to see how he grows and develops in the public eye. With the guidance of his parents, he is expected to be a valuable asset to the royal family for years to come. Overall, it was a historic moment for James and his family as he steps into his new role.

On September 14, 1607, the Earls, their families, and their supporters set sail from Lough Swilly on a French ship. Leaving their ancestral homes behind, this departure marked not only a physical exodus but also the end of the old Gaelic order that had endured for centuries. Consequently the Flight of the Earls was a watershed moment in Irish history that marked the definitive ascendancy of English.
In the wake of the flight of the Earls, the lands and titles left behind were confiscated by the English crown. This accelerated the process of English colonisation over the next century and led to deep-seated changes in land ownership and culture that influenced later Irish nationalists.
