The war and its subsequent Internal Settlement, signed in 1978 by Smith and Muzorewa, led to the implementation in June 1979 of universal suffrage and end of white minority rule in Rhodesia, which was renamed Zimbabwe Rhodesia under a black majority government. However, this new order failed to win international recognition and the war continued.
Negotiations between the government of Zimbabwe Rhodesia, the British government and Mugabe and Nkomo's united "Patriotic Front" took place at Lancaster House, London in December 1979, and the Lancaster House Agreement was signed. The country returned temporarily to British control and new elections were held under British and Commonwealth supervision in March 1980. ZANU won the election and Mugabe became the first Prime Minister of Zimbabwe on 18 April 1980, when the country achieved internationally recognised independence.
Why the Sheer FEROCITY & DESPERATION of the Rhodesian War is Unappreciated by the Casual Historian
The Rhodesian Bush War was one of the less peaceful decolonisation movements under the Cold War umbrella. But just what was this bloody conflict all about?

A Rhodesian documentary made in 1978 - in the height of the Rhodesian Bush War. This video was never seen ever since until now. It was donated to Our Site, http://www.newrhodesian.net by a former Rhodesian Light Infantry Chaplain, who actually made this film. He added:
"...The color version had a long story: I was asked by the then Minister of Defence P.K.Van de Byl to make the film for the international market and did so by "calling up" several RTV staff into service...and we eventually completed the movie in its current form under the umbrella organization called "Friends of the Chaplain Corps" which I founded as a "non military" organization that could operate in the civilian world..."
Due to YouTube's 10-minute limit the film is splitted into two parts.
