The Republic of Yucatán (Spanish:República de Yucatán) was a sovereign state during two periods of the nineteenth century. The first Republic of Yucatán, founded May 29, 1823, willingly joined the Mexican federation as the Federated Republic of Yucatán on December 23, 1823, less than seven months later. The second Republic of Yucatán began in 1841, with its declaration of independence from the Mexican Federation. It remained independent for seven years, after which it rejoined the Mexican Federation. The area of the former republic includes the modern Mexican states of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo. The Republic of Yucatán usually refers to the Second Republic (1841–1848).
The Republic of Yucatán was governed by the Constitution of 1841, one of the most advanced of its time. It guaranteed individual rights, religious freedom and what was then a new legal form called amparo (English: protection). The 1847 Caste War caused the Republic of Yucatán to request military aid from Mexico. This was given on the condition that the Republic rejoin the Mexican Federation.
Yucatán (ʝukaˈtan), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Yucatán (Spanish:Estado Libre y Soberano de Yucatán), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, comprise the 32 Federal Entities of Mexico. It is divided in 106 municipalities, and its capital city is Mérida.
Before the arrival of Spaniards to the Yucatán Peninsula, the name of this region was el Mayab. In Mayan language, "ma' ya'ab" is translated as "a few". It was a very important region for the Mayan civilization, which reached the peak of its development on this place, where they founded the cities of Chichen Itza, Izamal, Motul, Mayapan, Ek' Balam and Ichcaanzihóo (also called T'ho), now Mérida.
After the Spanish conquest, Yucatán Peninsula was a single administrative and political entity, the Captaincy General of Yucatán. Following independence and the breakup of the Mexican Empire in 1823, the first Republic of Yucatán was proclaimed which then was voluntarily annexed to the Federal Republic of United Mexican States on December 21, 1823. Later on March 16, 1841, as a result of cultural and political conflicts around the federal pact, Yucatán declared independence from Mexico to form a second Republic of Yucatán, but eventually on July 14, 1848, Yucatán rejoined Mexico. In 1858, in the middle of the caste war, the state of Yucatan was divided for the first time, establishing Campeche as a separate state (officially in 1863). During the Porfiriato, in 1902, the state of Yucatan was divided again to form the Federal territory that later became the present state of Quintana Roo.
The proper derivation of the word Yucatán is widely debated. Hernando Cortes, in the first of his letters to Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, claimed that the name Yucatán comes from a misunderstanding. In this telling, the first Spanish explorers asked what the area was called and the response they received, "Yucatan," was a Yucatec Maya word meaning "I don't understand what you're saying." Others claim that the source of the name is the Nahuatl (Aztec) word Yocatlān, "place of richness."
Human history
Maya
The Yucatán Peninsula comprises a significant proportion of the ancient Maya Lowlands (although the Maya culture extended south of the Yucatán Peninsula, through present Guatemala and into Honduras and highland Chiapas). There are many Maya archaeological sites throughout the peninsula; some of the better-known are Chichen Itza, Tulum and Uxmal.IndigenousMaya and Mestizos of partial Maya descent make up a sizable portion of the region's population, and Mayan languages are widely spoken there.
Robert John Downey Jr. (born April 4, 1965) is an American actor. His career has included critical and popular success in his youth, followed by a period of substance abuse and legal troubles, and a resurgence of commercial success in middle age.
There are Latin American countries that no longer exist. It's a pretty well known fact that countries come and go, and in the Americas we've had many countries pop up since the European colonial era; some of which have evolved into some of the most distinguished nations the world has ever known, others, not so much.
In today's video, we're going to be discussing some of the lost Latino nations, or Latin American countries that no longer exist due to historical events including annexation, balkanization and other forms of territorial change. Thanks for watching!

YUCATAN The Culture Is Nature, The Culture Is Maya
To the rhythm of mariachis and traditional dancing, the film by Pierre Brouwers guides you across Yucatan, this Mexican state that juts out into the Caribbean sea. From the white sandy beaches of the Maya river to huge green expanses where the sites of Calakmul or Coba barely emerge from the forest, the cameras take you to not only the most prestigious Maya sites, but also other lesser known locations that from an archaeological perspective are just as interesting. Spectacular caves and rocks, mangroves and nature reserves form the décor in which one of America’s most fascinating civilizations developed and flourished. -

The Yucatan had appealed to the United States for annexation, as they desperately needed military assistance against a local Mayan uprising. When this was brought to the United States government, President James K Polk mildly approved of the offer and it passed the house of representatives, but was blocked by the senate, citing the in Mexico as their primary concern. But for the sake of alternate history. Let's look at what would happen if the United States annexed the Yucatan republic.
The Yucatan was twice a Republic during the 19th century. The first in 1823, where it joined the Mexican Federation following independence. Mexico had gained its independence from Spain in 1821, as the First Mexican Empire. This empire, led by Emperor Augustin I quickly had massive stability issues. In August of the following year, a plan to overthrow Augustin was discovered which encompassed 16 members of congress. In late October of the same year, Augustin had dissolved congress as they were heavily criticizing him and his policies. This led to revolts all across the empire, and him eventually being deposed. This also led to the formation of the Central American Republic, which encompassed all lands between Mexico and Panama, who had been un-offical provinces in the empire. From their, Mexico was formed as a Republic, with a new constitutions put into place in 1824. This constitution was repealed in 1835, putting in the era of a centralist government. This centralist government caused a massive amount of rebellion and republic declarations within the following years. A rebellion started in the states of Zacatecas and Tabascos which, combined with the successful Texas Revolution in 35, heavily weakened the governments control in the outer regions of the country. When the French invaded Mexico in 1838, this only further weakened the centralist control over the country, sparking more rebellions in the Rio Grande, and another rebellion in Tabasco. The Yucatan declared their independence again in 1841, citing the stripping away of local autonomy as the main cause. The original centralist government had accepted the Yucatan independence in some capacity but when Santa Anna staged his coup in 1841, he radicalized the centralist government, and sent an army to re-take the territory. They managed to fight back against the Mexican army. But were facing severe economic issues due to the blocking of Mexican trade, and later blockade by the United States. And a against the local Mayan. In desperation, The Yucatan government pleaded with various governments for military assistance in exchange for sovereignty.

In 1848 Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula almost became part of the United States. The US Senate said, "No." Why?

If the US annexed the Yucatan in 1848 the Soviets could win the Cold War or nuclear war would break out. MLK and Malcolm X would both live in the Yucatan at some point. To find out how watch this video.
The United States had the opportunity to annex the Yucatan during the Mexican-American. But due to political concerns and the fighting on-going with Mexico, the US congress failed to pass the resolution for annexation. But what would happen if the US annexed the Yucatan Republic? Here is one scenario.

Yucatán se ha separado de México más veces de las que crees, por qué lo hizo? Y por qué volvió?
