Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright (born July 22, 1973) is an American-Canadiansinger-songwriter and composer. He has recorded seven albums of original music and numerous tracks on compilations and film soundtracks. He has also written a classical opera and set Shakespeare sonnets to music for a theater piece by Robert Wilson.
Life and career
Early years
Wainwright was born in Rhinebeck, New York, to folk singers Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III. His parents divorced when he was three, and he lived with his mother in Montreal for most of his youth. Wainwright has dual US and Canadian citizenship. He attended high school at the Millbrook School in New York (which would later inspire his song "Millbrook"), and later briefly studied piano at McGill in Montreal. He began playing the piano at age six, and started touring at age 13 with "The McGarrigle Sisters and Family", a folk group featuring Rufus, his sister Martha, his mother Kate, and aunt Anna. His song "I'm a-Runnin'", which he performed in the film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller at the age of 14, earned him a nomination for a 1989Genie Award for Best Original Song. He was nominated for a 1990Juno Award for Most Promising Male Vocalist of the Year.
Wainwright was signed to the DreamWorks label in 1996 after Waronker heard the demo tape he recorded with Marchand. Over the course of two years, Wainwright and Brion recorded 56 songs on 62 rolls of tape at a cost that exceeded $700,000, which was then narrowed down to twelve tracks for the album. No singles were released from Rufus Wainwright, though Sophie Muller directed the music video for "April Fools", which featured Wainwright in Los Angeles attempting to prevent the deaths of operaheroines. To support the album, Wainwright toured throughout the United States and Canada following its release.
Wainwright originally planned to create a more simple piano and voice album, but began leaning towards more lush sounds once the recording process started. Guests on Release the Stars include Richard Thompson, longtime friend and fellow singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson, family members Martha Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle, Neil Tennant, Joan Wasser, and actress Siân Phillips. The world tour supporting the album lasted from May 2007 to February 2008, and included tour stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. For Release the Stars, Wainwright received two nominations for the Juno Awards of 2008, including Adult Alternative Album of the Year and Songwriter of the Year, and won the Outstanding Music Artist award at the 19th GLAAD Media Awards.

Lyrics
...................
Why do you keep all your stars in from your studio on Melrose Avenue?
You have lost all your assets owned in life-long contracts to you
Didn't you know that old Hollywood is over?
Oh, can't you see all the good that celebrity can do for those in the dark?
Yes, of course, I am speaking in metaphors for something more in your heart
Didn't you know that old Hollywood is over?
So why not just release the gates and let them all come out?
Remember that without them there would be no Paramount
No paramount need to hold on to what isn't yours
Release the stars
The more that you fight
Then the more they will scrutinize and realize just your size
And, believe me, you are no match for a public that has seen the whites of your e...

Is this heartbreak or is this heartburn? Have I been played or do I need a rolaid? Gotta learn the difference 'tween I love ya The difference 'tween I love ya and the symptoms of ebola Is this heartbreak or is this heartburn? Can I be spared from being so dramatic? Gotta learn the difference 'tween I love ya The difference 'tween I love ya and that derailed rollercoaster Gonna rain down on my sunny Sunday shoes Guess best I get some galoshes Let me tell you that this song's useful Yes this song's useful when you're really drunk And you gotta learn the difference 'tween I love ya The difference 'tween I love ya and whatever.
