Robert Wilson: “LUTHER dancing with the gods”
With his visionary productions and highly expressive stage imagery, Robert Wilson has been writing theater history for four decades. In celebration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, he joins forces with the Rundfunkchor Berlin to create a new project for the Pierre Boulez Saal. LUTHER dancing with the gods—the first scenic production to be seen in the new hall—examines and re-interprets the relationship of words and music, sound and image, past and present, combining them in unexpected ways. Compositions by Bach, Knut Nystedt, and Steve Reich will stand side by side with texts by Martin Luther, the poetry of William Carlos Williams, and verses from the Bible.

Premiered on April 12, 2009 at the Berliner Ensemble, Berlin, Germany
Performed in German.
The Bard is modern and alive than ever in Robert Wilson's Shakespeare's Sonnets, a contemporary take on 25 specially chosen sonnets from Shakespeare's cannon. Set to a sweeping score composed by Rufus Wainwright, a genre-bending mix of medieval German Minnesang, classical, pop, and cabaret rock is performed by the actors of the Berliner Ensemble. The sonnets were pared down and selected by dramaturge Jutta Ferbers who deftly adapted these captivating poems that were originally unintended for the theater. The production was staged in 2009 for the fourth centennial of the publishing of the Sonnets.
For this production, Wilson embraces the prevalence of subversive gender conventions embedded in Shakespeare's 154 sonnets which move fluidly between male and female objects of desire. Several quintessential characters make an appearance; from boy to fool, from Cupid to the mysterious Dark Lady, from the Queen of England to Shakespeare himself. Wilson's signature sculpting of time, light, and gesture combined with Wainwright's romantic, sensitive, and at times disturbingly dark score transports audiences to a dreamlike place suspended in time.

Accentus Music - New on DVD and Blu-ray - Available worldwide in September/October 2015 - Adam’s Passion is the moving first collaboration between two “masters of slow motion who harmonize perfectly with each other” (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). In the spectacular setting of a former submarine factory, American director and universal artist Robert Wilson creates a poetic visual world in which the mystical musical language of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt can cast its meditative spell. Three of Pärt’s major works – Adam’s Lament, Tabula rasa, and Miserere, as well as Sequentia, a new work composed especially for this production – are brought together here using light, space, and movement to create a tightly-woven Gesamtkunstwerk in which the artistic visions of these two great artists mirror each other.

The video series THEATRE DIALOGUES presents online interviews with distinguished theatre scholars and theatre makers.
A talk with Robert Wilson, theatre director
Moderated by Kamelia Nikolova and Asen Terziev
Robert Wilson is among the most celebrated figures in the contemporary performing and visual arts. The invention of his outstanding visual theatre makes him a main emblem of the postmodern theatre aesthetics. His productions are unusual and very powerful compositions of sound and colour, of silence and light, of images and movement.
Robert Wilson was born on the 4th October 1941 in Waco, Texas. After attending local schools and studying business administration at the University of Texas, in 1963 he left for Brooklyn, New York, where he graduated architecture in the prestigious Pratt Institute. Here, apart from studying the space, he was attracted by the experiments in dance of George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham. Excited by this discovery of the possibilities for expression of the human body in the space, in 1968 Robert Wilson created his own experimental theatre company „Byrd Hoffman School of Byrds“. For the Avignon Festival in 1976 and in collaboration with the composer Philip Glass he created his most famous production – “Einstein on the Beach”. This production strongly announced the powerful visual theatre of Robert Wilson and after its premiere he started working more often for the big theatre and opera stages, and festivals, in Europe.
His signature artistic style is the mark of his over 50 performances, such as: “Hamletmaschine”, “The Black Rider” (in collaboration with William Burrows and Tom Waits), “Woyzeck”, “The Threepenny Opera”, “Happy Days”, “Shakespeare’s Sonnets”, “Krapp’s Last Tape”, “The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic” (with the participation of Marina Abramovic), “Rhinoceros”, “Faust” and others. Among these a special place holds his solo-performance “Hamlet”, created in 1995, in which Robert Wilson is director, set designer and performer.
