Reinhard Gehlen

Reinhard Gehlen (3 April 1902 – 8 June 1979) was a German general who served as chief of the Foreign Armies East (FHO) military intelligence unit during World War II, and who later became leader of the Gehlen Organization and the first president of the Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst) (BND) during the Cold War. Gehlen is considered one of the most legendary Cold War spymasters.

He was appointed chief of FHO, the German Army's military intelligence unit on the Eastern Front, in 1942. As an officer in the Wehrmacht, he reached the rank of major general just before being sacked by Hitler for his accurately pessimistic intelligence reports. As the Cold War began, he was recruited by the United States military to set up a spy ring directed against the Soviet Union (known as the Gehlen Organization) which employed numerous former SS, SD and Wehrmacht officers, and eventually became head of the West German intelligence apparatus. He served as the first president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) until 1968. As president of the Federal Intelligence Service, itself a civilian office, he was promoted to lieutenant-general of the Reserve in the West German Bundeswehr and thus became the country's highest-ranking reserve officer.

Die Anwerbung und Einstellung von NS-Mördern und Schreibtischtätern hatte System. Gerhard Sälter, Mitglied der Unabhängigen Historikerkommission, kann das bis weit in die 1960er Jahre nachweisen. Er hat zehn Jahre lang geforscht, dabei zahlreiche Akten und Personalakten des Nachrichtendienstes einsehen können. Sein Fazit eröffnet historisch eine neue Dimension zum frühen BND. Die Organisation Gehlen, ab 1956 dann der Bundesnachrichtendienst, habe zahlreiche Täter des Holocaust nicht trotz ihrer Verbrechen rekrutiert sondern wegen ihres nachweislichen Einsatzes für das NS-Terrorregime. Über 30 Mitarbeiter des Dienstes wurden seinen Erkenntnissen nach sogar aus Mitgliedern und leitenden SS-Führern der Einsatzgruppen rekrutiert, die während des zweiten Weltkrieges den Holocaust in Osteuropa durchführten. Eine jüdische Ehefrau hingegen konnte ein Einstellungshindernis beim BND sein, das gibt es schwarz auf weiß. Wie konnte der Dienst nach Gründung der Bundesrepublik immer noch NS-Verbrecher der Strafverfolgung entziehen? Warum hat Adenauers Kanzleramt als Aufsichtsbehörde dem Entstehen nationalsozialistischer Netzwerke im BND tatenlos zugesehen? Welche Rolle spielte dabei Kanzleramtschef Hans Maria Globke? Und hatte der BND tatsächlich nicht mal Skrupel, mit Alois Brunner zusammenzuarbeiten - Eichmanns Gehilfe bei den Deportationen in die Todeslager? Die Anwerbung und Einstellung von NS-Mördern und Schreibtischtätern hatte System. Gerhard Sälter, Mitglied der Unabhängigen Historikerkommission, kann das bis weit in die 1960er Jahre nachweisen. Er hat zehn Jahre lang geforscht, dabei zahlreiche Akten und Personalakten des Nachrichtendienstes einsehen können. Sein Fazit eröffnet historisch eine neue Dimension zum frühen BND. Die Organisation Gehlen, ab 1956 dann der Bundesnachrichtendienst, habe zahlreiche Täter des Holocaust nicht trotz ihrer Verbrechen rekrutiert sondern wegen ihres nachweislichen Einsatzes für das NS-Terrorregime. Über 30 Mitarbeiter des Dienstes wurden seinen Erkenntnissen nach sogar aus Mitgliedern und leitenden SS-Führern der Einsatzgruppen rekrutiert, die während des zweiten Weltkrieges den Holocaust in Osteuropa durchführten. Eine jüdische Ehefrau hingegen konnte ein Einstellungshindernis beim BND sein, das gibt es schwarz auf weiß. Wie konnte der Dienst nach Gründung der Bundesrepublik immer noch NS-Verbrecher der Strafverfolgung entziehen? Warum hat Adenauers Kanzleramt als Aufsichtsbehörde dem Entstehen nationalsozialistischer Netzwerke im BND tatenlos zugesehen? Welche Rolle spielte dabei Kanzleramtschef Hans Maria Globke? Und hatte der BND tatsächlich nicht mal Skrupel, mit Alois Brunner zusammenzuarbeiten - Eichmanns Gehilfe bei den Deportationen in die Todeslager? Der Film zeigt schonungslos neue, erschreckende Erkenntnisse aus der Forschung in den Archiven des Bundesnachrichtendienstes. In keiner anderen bundesdeutschen Organisation oder Behörde wurde in dieser Konsequenz an nationalsozialistischen Vorstellungswelten festgehalten und somit auch der Boden für rechtsextremistisches Gedankengut kontinuierlich genährt. Germany could return to authoritarianism if the economic conditions were to seriously worsen in the country, the son of Hans Frank the governor general of Nazi occupied Poland during World War Two, has told BBC Hardtalk. "As long as our economy is great, and as long as we make money everything is very democratic," said Niklas Frank, but "if we have five to 10 years heavy economic problems the swamp is a lake, and is a sea and will swallow again, everything," he added. Niklas Frank said he "despises" his father for the crimes he committed while he was governor-general of Poland from 1939 to 1945, and tours Germany giving speeches about his father and the legacy of the Nazi era. Reinhard Gehlen

Reinhard Gehlen (3 April 1902 – 8 June 1979) was a German general who served as chief of the Foreign Armies East (FHO) military intelligence unit during World War II, and who later became leader of the Gehlen Organization and the first president of the Federal Intelligence Service (Bundesnachrichtendienst) (BND) during the Cold War. Gehlen is considered one of the most legendary Cold War spymasters.

He was appointed chief of FHO, the German Army's military intelligence unit on the Eastern Front, in 1942. As an officer in the Wehrmacht, he reached the rank of major general just before being sacked by Hitler for his accurately pessimistic intelligence reports. As the Cold War began, he was recruited by the United States military to set up a spy ring directed against the Soviet Union (known as the Gehlen Organization) which employed numerous former SS, SD and Wehrmacht officers, and eventually became head of the West German intelligence apparatus. He served as the first president of the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) until 1968. As president of the Federal Intelligence Service, itself a civilian office, he was promoted to lieutenant-general of the Reserve in the West German Bundeswehr and thus became the country's highest-ranking reserve officer.
