A Red Grouse Calling in Perthshire, Scotland
On one of my tours of Scotland with a group of lovely ladies from the USA, we drove up the beautiful route from Crieff (where we were staying) to Kenmore, going over Glen Quaich in the process. Shortly after taking the side road from Amulree, I spotted this male Red Grouse on the wall. He didn't seem to be concerned about us, and stayed on the wall for more than enough time for me to capture this footage and to take some really nice photos too. I love his call!

Grouse ~ Red Grouse Bird Call and Pictures for Teaching BIRDSONG
The Red Grouse, Lagopus lagopus scotica, is a medium-sized bird of the grouse family which is found in heather moorland in Great Britain and Ireland. It is usually classified as a subspecies of the Willow Ptarmigan but is sometimes considered to be a separate species, Lagopus scotica. It is also known as the moorfowl or moorbird.
The Red Grouse is differentiated from the Willow Ptarmigan and Rock Ptarmigan by its plumage being reddish brown, and not having a white winter plumage. The tail is black and the legs are white. There are white stripes on the underwing and red combs over the eye. Females are less reddish than the males and have less conspicuous combs. Young birds are duller and lack the red combs.

Searching for red grouse on Yorkshire's majestic moors
In this video I head off to the Yorkshire Dales where I embark upon photographing the red grouse, on Ilkley Moor.
With an early start getting up at 3:30 AM or an hour and a half's drive my aim was to be there in plenty of time before sunrise, the forecast was meant to be good with some clear skies however as the morning progressed and the sun rose, there was a thick Bank of cloud on the horizon in the east therefore preventing a good sunrise which I was hoping for to illuminate the red grouse on the Stonewall of the Moor.
Still, all was not lost I had a full day ahead of me and my aim of getting one particular photo of a nice male grouse with his head coming out of the purple Heather was my aim.

Photographing Red Grouse and a surprise visitor makes an appearance - Bird Photography

Birds in Ireland are sometimes thought to belong to a separate subspecies L. l. hibernica. They are slightly paler than those in Britain and the females have yellower plumage with more finely barred underparts. This may be an adaptation to camouflage them in moorland with higher grass and sedge content and less heather.
It is identified by its 'chut!chut!chut!chut!chut!chuttt....' call, or the 'Goback, goback, goback' vocalisation. The wings make a whirring sound when the bird is disturbed from a resting place.
Grouse populations display periodic cycling, where the population builds up to very high densities only to crash a few years later, and then recover. The main driver of this cyclic pattern is thought to be the parasitic nematode worm Trichostrongylus tenuis.
However, in his book,[1] V. C. Wynne-Edwards suggests that the primary reason for mortality in grouse population is homeostasis depending largely on food availability and that the 'Grouse disease', due to the parasitic worm Trichostrongylus tenuis is a mistaken diagnosis of the after effects of social exclusion.

As the morning progressed the midges came out in their thousands and descended upon anything that stopped, making it at times hardly bearable to stop and take pictures of the grouse I did have a mosquito net to put over my head but this is only good enough for when you stop for longer periods as it is quite hard to see out of.
Anyway I eventually got the shot after hours of trying and miles of walking one particular male grouse obliged Ann stuck his head out of the purple Heather and posed for a few seconds for me to get the image that I had been longing for since first coming up here in April.
A fantastic day-out job done despite being bitten to death by the midges.

Why shoot game birds?
Game is wild, natural and free range, and it is one of the healthiest meats available today. It is low in cholesterol and high in protein. Results from research commissioned by the Game-to-Eat campaign (Leatherhead Food International Research 2006) suggest that there are real health benefits to eating game. Both pheasant and partridge contain high levels of iron, protein, vitamin B(6) and selenium, which helps to protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.
In addition to the nutritional benefits of game, game shooting is worth £2 billion annually to the rural economy and supports 74,000 jobs. There are 480,000 (UK government figures) active game shooters in the UK who enjoy bird shooting under the principles of the Code of Good Shooting Practice.
More than 2 million hectares are actively managed for shooting in the UK creating proven (PACEC, 2014) conservation benefits and preserving important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, in particular farmland birds. UK shooting providers spend £5.4 million on cover crop seeds every year and maintain over 25,000ha of wild-bird cover.
