Top 10 Most Effective RANGED Weapons (pre modern)
The bow and arrow seems to have been invented in the later Paleolithic or early Mesolithic periods. The oldest signs of its use in Europe come from the Stellmoor (de) in the Ahrensburg valley (de) north of Hamburg, Germany and dates from the late Paleolithic, about 10,000–9000 BC. There are no definite earlier bows. The oldest bows known so far come from the Holmegård swamp in Denmark. Bows eventually replaced the spear-thrower as the predominant means for launching shafted projectiles, on every continent except Australasia, though spear-throwers persisted alongside the bow in parts of the Americas, notably Mexico and among the Inuit.

The Roman Pilum Was Unmatched as a Ranged Weapon
The pilum, a vital weapon in Rome’s imperial ambitions, was a simple iron spear fixed with two bolts onto a heavy wooden post. It was remarkably effective against an attacker charging at high speed.

Since the beginning of time, humans have been making and using weapons to kill. Weapons are used in violent battles and horrible crimes. Freedom fighters, anti-terrorist units, and liberators also use weapons.
History of Weapons is more than just a technical investigation. It shows the connection between creating a new military tool and what happens after it is used. These are forces that have shaped humanity for centuries.
A ranged weapon is any weapon that can hit a target from a distance greater than hand-to-hand combat. Ranged weapons give the attacker an advantage because the target is often hit from far away, making it harder for the defenders to react and hit back effectively.
It also puts distance between the attacker and the opponent, which is a safer way to fight since close physical contact during melee fights often puts the attacker in the enemy's line of sight and puts them at the same risk of getting hurt or killed.
Gunpowder is closely related to the development of long-distance weapons. Chinese alchemists found out around 850 AD that potassium nitrate, sulphur, and charcoal could be used to make an explosive substance. Historians think this critical discovery was made when the alchemists were looking for the elixir of life.
At first, this black powder was used to make harmless fireworks, but it soon found its way into the world of weapons. At first, it was used in cannons, then grenades, and finally, the first primitive portable guns.
Bamboo sticks depicted these with gunpowder and little bullets. These arms had a short range and were only used in hand-to-hand combat.
In the 12th century, trade trips to Asia and travellers like Marco Polo brought gunpowder and ranged weapons to Europe. The Europeans gradually improved technology and developed new types of firearms.
By the start of the 14th century, guns were common all over Europe. At first, they were made with a matchlock, then a wheellock, a flintlock, and finally a percussion cap. The percussion cap was primarily made in the United States and was a forerunner of modern pistols.
Early ranged weapons were often designed to be thrown by hand, like darts, javelins, and slings, or they were made of elastic, like slingshots, bows, and crossbows.
When used in large numbers, these long-range weapons were very influential in ancient and early medieval warfare, mainly because they allowed the user to launch multiple attacks before an enemy with melee weapons or shorter-range missile weapons could get close enough to be a threat.
After gunpowder and firearms were invented, guns and other pneumatic long-range weapons became the most common in armed conflicts, even in close combat. Long-range artillery, rockets and guided missiles are all examples of ranged weapons used tactically and strategically in modern warfare.

Bows and arrows have been present in Egyptian culture since its predynastic origins. Classical civilizations, notably the Assyrians, Greeks, Armenians, Persians, Parthians, Indians, Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese fielded large numbers of archers in their armies.
The development of firearms rendered bows obsolete in warfare, albeit efforts were sometimes made to preserve archery practice. In Wales and England, for example, the government tried to enforce practice with the Longbow until the end of the 16th century. Early firearms were inferior in rate-of-fire, and were very susceptible to wet weather. However, they had longer effective range and were tactically superior in the common situation of soldiers shooting at each other from behind obstructions. They also required significantly less training to use properly, in particular penetrating steel armour without any need to develop special musculature. Armies equipped with guns could thus provide superior firepower, and highly trained archers became obsolete on the battlefield. Traditional archery remains in use for sport, and for hunting in many areas.

Twitch subscribers gain instant access to VODs of our new shows like Between the Sheets and All Work No Play. But don't worry: Twitch broadcasts will be uploaded to YouTube about 36 hours after airing live, with audio-only podcast versions of select shows on iTunes, Google Play & Spotify following a week after the initial air date. Twitch subscribers also gain access to our official custom emote set and subscriber badges (designed by our beloved Critter Arsequeef) and the ability to post links in Twitch chat!
