Rail transport in Sweden uses a network of 13,000km of track, the 21st largest in the world. Construction of the first railway line in Sweden began in 1855. The major operator is the state-owned SJ AB.
Major national passenger train operators SJ AB (usually just called SJ), and the cargo transport operator, Green Cargo, are both fully owned by the state. A private company Tågkompaniet operates in central Sweden, and there are a number of regional companies. Tram systems are used in Gothenburg, Norrköping and Stockholm. There is a metro system in Stockholm, the Stockholm Metro.
While most current railway lines of Sweden were decided and built by the state, and receive their technical upkeep from the public as well, SJ no longer holds a monopoly on operating and owning passenger trains where such can be run profitably on a commercial basis. Large parts of the rail network serve parts of the country which don't generate enough passenger or cargo traffic to make a profit, and on some of these stretches SJ has held a de facto monopoly until very recently (2010, see below in this section) Average speed is an important factor regarding profitability (more distance per hour means more income per hour).
It is also commonly referred to as train transport. In contrast to road transport, where vehicles run on a prepared flat surface, rail vehicles are also directionally guided by the tracks on which they run. Track usually consists of steel rails, installed on ties (sleepers) and ballast, on which the rolling stock, usually fitted with metal wheels, moves. Other variations are also possible, such as slab track where the rails are fastened to a concrete foundation resting on a prepared subsurface.
Rolling stock in railway transport systems generally has lower frictional resistance when compared with highway vehicles and the passenger and freight cars (carriages and wagons) can be coupled into longer trains. The operation is carried out by a railway company, providing transport between train stations or freight customer facilities. Power is provided by locomotives which either draw electric power from a railway electrification system or produce their own power, usually by diesel engines. Most tracks are accompanied by a signalling system. Railways are a safe land transport system when compared to other forms of transport. Railway transport is capable of high levels of passenger and cargo utilization and energy efficiency, but is often less flexible and more capital-intensive than highway transport is, when lower traffic levels are considered.
Rail transport is operated by SJ, DSBFirst, Green Cargo, Tågkompaniet and more. Most counties have companies that do ticketing, marketing and financing of local passenger rail, but the actual operation are done by the above-mentioned companies.
Total: 11,663km (includes 3,594km of privately (in fact county) owned railways) or 9227km of national railways
standard gauge: 11,568km 1,435mm (4ft81⁄2in) gauge (7,531km electrified and 1,152km double track) (2008)
narrow gauge: 65km of 891mm (2ft113⁄32in) gauge (2008)
Light rail and metros
Stockholm Metro (Stockholms Tunnelbana) is the only metro system in Sweden.
Cities with light rail (trams);
Gothenburg: Gothenburg tram - the most extensive tram network in Northern Europe, consisting of 190km on a total track length of 80km
Stockholm previously had a large tram network, but this was discontinued in favour of bus and metro; a revival of the tram network was seen in the construction of Tvärbanan in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Sweden (i/ˈswiːdən/SWEE-dən; Swedish:Sverige[ˈsvæːrjə]listen), officially the Kingdom of Sweden (Swedish: Konungariket Sverige), is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. It borders Norway to the west and Finland to the east, and is connected to Denmark in the southwest by a bridge-tunnel across the Öresund. At 450,295 square kilometres (173,860sqmi), Sweden is the third-largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of over 9.8 million. Sweden consequently has a low population density of 21 inhabitants per square kilometre (54/sqmi), with the highest concentration in the southern half of the country. Approximately 85% of the population lives in urban areas. Southern Sweden is predominantly agricultural, while the north is heavily forested. Sweden is part of the geographical area of Fennoscandia.
Germanic peoples have inhabited Sweden since prehistoric times, emerging into history as the Geats/Götar and Swedes/Svear and constituting the sea peoples known as the Norsemen. Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the Middle Ages. In the 17th century, it expanded its territories to form the Swedish Empire, which became one of the great powers of Europe until the early 18th century. Swedish territories outside the Scandinavian Peninsula were gradually lost during the 18th and 19th centuries, beginning with the annexation of present-day Finland by Russia in 1809. The last war in which Sweden was directly involved was in 1814, when Norway was militarily forced into personal union.
There are also at least 12 other places in Sweden called Å, most of them only a farm or a few houses. Å is pronounced "Aw", or phonetically [o:].
Å, which means stream or small river, is a contender for the title of shortest place-name in the world— although other places named Å as well as Ö and Y can make the same claim. As a consequence, many tourists have ventured to the village for the sole purpose of either taking photos of or stealing the place-name sign.
The parish of Å is rich in ancient remains, of which the oldest date from the Stone Age.
The name of Sweden (Swedish Sverige[ˈsvær.jə]listen) is ultimately derived from the ethnonym of the Swedes.
The English name was loaned from Dutch in the 17th century to refer to Sweden as an emerging great power. Before Sweden's imperial expansion, Early Modern English used Swedeland.
The Old English name of Sweden was Sweoland or Sweorice, land or realm of the Sweonas, The Germanic tribes of the Sviar (Old NorseSvíþjóð). The name of the Sviar itself is derived from a Proto-Norse*Swihoniz, presumably a self-designation containing the Germanic reflexive *swe- "one's own, self".
Sweden
The modern English name Sweden is exceptional in being loaned from Dutch. Before the gradual introduction of Sweden in the 17th century, English used Swedeland.
It is based on Middle DutchZweden, the Dutch name of Sweden, and in origin the dative plural of Zwede "Swede".
It has been in use in English from about 1600, first recorded in Scottish Swethin, Swadne.
Country names based on a dative plural in -n became productive in German and Dutch in the 15th century; compare German Italien "Italy", Spanien "Spain", Rumänien "Romania", Ungarn "Hungary".

How Freight Railroads Transport Goods Through Intermodal
Every day the intermodal network transports goods from around the world to the American consumer and American-made products to consumers around the world.
Intermodal transportation is the seamless movement of goods utilizing multiple modes of transportation to produce the most efficient and cost-effective move possible. The efficiency gains realized by intermodal shippers help to make U.S. businesses more competitive in the global economy.
Freight rail is an integral part of this system, providing affordable and reliable long-haul movement of goods while working cooperatively with competitors like trucks who are better suited to short-haul freight movement.

Trucks on Train | Automobile Rail Transport | Indian Railways
Enjoy watching the extremely rare footage of Brand new Trucks being shipped on Rails. Ashok Leyland 1616il (Yellow) and U-Truck (White) , 64 Ashok Leyland Trucks moving Southwards on 32 Wagons. This is one of the cheapest ways to transport Automobiles using Railways which is much faster and safer compared to Road Transportation which would require several huge Trucks to load these.
A regular service called Roll on – Roll off (RO-RO) is offered for transporting Loaded Trucks over Rails. Presently Konkan Railway is the only Zone offering such a Service in India . The service is available from Kolad (145 kms. from Mumbai), Verna (12 kms. from Madgaon) upto Surathkal (20 kms. from Mangalore) and vice-versa. There are plans to implement these Services in other parts of India soon.
