Bismillah Khan (Urdu:استاد بسم اللہ خان صاحب; 21 March 1913 – 21 August 2006), often referred to by the honorific title Ustad, was an Indian musician credited with popularizing the shehnai, a subcontinental wind instrument of the oboe class. While the shehnai had long held importance as a folk instrument played primarily during traditional ceremonies, Khan is credited with elevating its status and bringing it to the concert stage.
He was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 2001, becoming the Third classical musician after M. S. Subbulakshmi and Ravi Shankar to be accorded this distinction. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan also.
Early life
Bismillah Khan was born on 21 March 1913 in Dumraon, Bihar in northern India. He was the second son of Bachaie Khan and Mitthan. His parents had initially named him Amiruddin, to rhyme with their first-born son Shamshuddin. However, his grandfather, Rasool Bux Khan, the shehnai master of the court of Bhojpur, exclaimed "Bismillah!" ("In the name of Allah!") at the sight of him and thereafter he came to be known by this name.
Bismillah Khan Mohammadi was born in 1961 in the Panjshir Province of Afghanistan. An ethnic Tajik, he is the son of Ghausuddin of the Panjshir Valley. After graduating from 14th grade in Abu Hanifa Seminary he enrolled at Kabul Military University. Mohammadi was a former PDPAParcham member, but after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan he aligned himself with mujahideen resistance commander Ahmad Shah Massoud.
When the Taliban gained control over large parts of Afghanistan in 1996 establishing their Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, Bismillah Khan served as Deputy Minister of Defense of the anti-Taliban and still recognized Islamic State of Afghanistan. He was a senior commander in the anti-Taliban resistance, the United Front (Northern Alliance), led by Ahmad Shah Massoud. After the attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent fall of the Taliban regime through United Front ground troops and the U.S. Air Force, Bismillah Khan was appointed commander of Kabul's police force and became a member of the Kabul Security Commission. During that period the security situation in Kabul was better than in other parts of Afghanistan.

AFGHANISTAN: TALIBAN FORCES LOYAL TO CHIEF MASSOOD DIG IN AT FRONTLINE
(4 Aug 1997) Farsi/Nat
Taliban forces and troops loyal to military chief Ahmed Shah Massood are dug in on the frontline just north of Kabul -- with neither side making gains.
Heavy artillery and rocket fire was shared across the frontline with both sides suffering casualties.
Artillery moves into position on the frontline about 20 kilometres north of the Afghanistan capital, Kabul.
These pictures, shot among troops loyal to ousted military chief Ahmed Shah Massood, show the strong firepower that's punched a hole in recent weeks through successive Taliban positions.
But in recent days, Massood's troops have failed to make any significant progress.
The offensive has stalled just south of Mir Bacha Kot, with both sides pounding the other daily with artillery and rocket fir...

Despite Taliban rocket strikes and bombings, Afghans voted for a new parliament on Saturday, the first election since a fraud-marred presidential ballot last year cast doubt on the legitimacy of the embattled government.
As officials tally votes over the next few days, the real test begins.
Afghans will have to decide whether to accept the results as legitimate despite a modest turnout and early evidence of fraud.
The Taliban had pledged to disrupt the vote and launched attacks starting with a rocket fired into the capital before dawn.
The insurgent group followed with a series of morning rocket strikes that hit major cities just as people were going to the polls - or weighing whether to risk it.
Defence Minister Rahim Wardak said that the Taliban had employed a "negative campaign to terrorise the people not to participate".
He said 27 Taliban were killed Saturday.

The offensive has stalled just south of Mir Bacha Kot, with both sides pounding the other daily with artillery and rocket fire.
Taliban jets have dropped cluster bombs behind the lines. These attacks have been mirrored by Massood forces.
Two weeks ago, northern opposition forces led by ousted military chief Ahmed Shah Massood drove through successive Taliban positions until they reached almost to the outskirts of Kabul.
The attacks have left dead and wounded on both sides.
SOUNDBITE: (Farsi)
"They (the Taliban) were pushed back from Hossein Kot. They lost many casualties and they were also pushed back from Zemma on both sides. We took 13 (Taliban) prisoners, we killed 40 (Taliban) and we lost one tank."
SUPERCAPTION: Bismillah Khan, Frontline Commander of Massood's Forces
The Taliban has imposed a strict version of Islamic law in the zones it controls, banning women from work and outlawing light entertainment like television and music.
The opposition Northern Alliance holds a more liberal view of Islam.
As the rockets continued to pound the plains north of Kabul, scores of refugees flooded onto the road leading south to the capital.
Many were fleeing their villages with whatever they could carry. But if Massood's forces resume their advance, Kabul may not prove to be the refuge they are hoping for.

Among the winding bylanes of Varanasi, Shekhar Gupta meets Ustad Bismillah Khan, the maestro who elevated the shenai from an instrument played at weddings to one that took pride of place on a concert stage. Ustadji talks about religion, the temples of Varanasi and his encounter with an Iraqi cleric who told him music was evil.
