A "Secretary of State for War" was one of the four specialised secretaries of state established in France in 1589. This Secretary of State was responsible for the Army. In 1791, the Secretary of State became the "Minister of War". Along with the other ministerial positions, it was abolished in 1794 and restored the next year. In the 1930s, the position was frequently named "Minister of War and of National Defence". After the Second World War, the War Ministry merged with the Ministry of the Navy, absorbing the role of the Minister of the Navy and Colonies, with a Minister of National Defence, and from 1974 a Minister of Defence (except for 2010 to 2012, when the office was styled as Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs) directing the entire military.
The current Minister of Defence and Veterans Affairs is Jean-Yves Le Drian.
Defence was a new ship, laid down in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1779. She was owned by Andrew Cabot and Moses Brown, Beverly merchants who operated a number of privateers. Massachusetts archives list her as a 170-ton brigantine with 16 six-pound cannon and a crew of 100.Defence was recruited to join the Penobscot Expedition, organized by the state of Massachusetts in response to the seizure of Castine (in what is now Maine on Penobscot Bay) by British forces in June 1779. She was commissioned on July 6, 1779, with John Edmonds of Beverly as captain.
The expedition sailed in late July 1779. Due to differences among the commanders, the expedition was never able to mount a successful attack on the British at Castine, and the fleet was scattered after the arrival of British reinforcements on August 13. All of the ships of the expedition were lost, either sunk, scuttled, burned, or captured over the next two days. Defence was torched and abandoned in the harbor of Stockton Springs, where she then sank. The ship's owners were eventually able to recover some compensation from the state for their loss. They built another privateer, also named Defence, of 140 tons in late 1779.
A planet (or asteroid or comet) is said to be "in opposition" when it is in opposition to the Sun. Because most orbits in the Solar System are nearly coplanar, this occurs when the Sun, Earth, and the body are approximately in a straight line, that is, Earth and the body are in the same direction as seen from the Sun.
The instant of opposition is defined as that when the apparent geocentric celestial longitude of the body differs by 180° from the apparent geocentric longitude of the Sun.
At that time, a body is
visible almost all night, rising around sunset, culminating around midnight and setting around sunrise
at the point in its orbit where it is roughly closest to Earth, making it appear bigger and brighter
An opposition proceeding is an administrative process available under the patent and trademark law of many jurisdictions which allows third parties to formally challenge the validity of a pending patent application ("pre-grant opposition"), of a granted patent ("post-grant opposition"), or of a trademark.
Patents
In the context of the proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO), third parties may dispute the validity of a granted European patent by filing a post-grant opposition under the European Patent Convention (EPC). The term for filing an opposition with the EPO is nine months from the publication of the mention of the grant of the European patent in the European Patent Bulletin.
The Minority Leader (Khmer:ប្រធានក្រុមភាគតិច) leads the largest political party not in government in the National Assembly of Cambodia. The Minority Leader acts as a dialogue partner of the Prime Minister. To become an official minority group, a party must secure 25% of the popular votes, and the party's leader shall become the Minority Leader.
The role was officially recognized by Parliament in November 2014, making Sam Rainsy the first official Minority Leader.
As in nearly every parliamentary democracy around the world, the Minority Leader comes from the political party with the largest number of seats in the Parliament yet is not in government. The Minority Leader is often seen as a Prime Minister-in-waiting.
The Open Document Format for Office Applications (ODF), also known as OpenDocument, is an XML-based file format for spreadsheets, charts, presentations and word processing documents. It was developed with the aim of providing an open, XML-based file format specification for office applications.
In addition to being an OASIS standard, it was published as an ISO/IEC international standard ISO/IEC 26300 — Open Document Format for Office Applications (OpenDocument).

The French Minister of Defence, Michelle Alliot-Marie, has ruled out sending any troops to Iraq, but says that France is ready to begin investment in the reconstruction of the country as soon as sovereignty is restored.
In a speech in Washington on Friday, Alliot-Marie said that relations between Europe and the United States had been strained, but remained fundamentally sound.
She told an audience at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) that relations had been aggravated by neo-conservative ideologues in the United States.
Alliot-Marie said that the US and France shared a goal of bringing stability and democracy to Iraq. But she said she felt more sympathy needed to be shown for historical and religious factors in Iraq, rather than imposing a system on the country from outside.

STORYLINE:
