Rhys Haydn Williams (14 July 1930 – 27 January 1993), born in Cwmllynfell, was a Welsh rugby union lock forward who gained 23 caps for Wales and ten consecutive caps for the British Lions. At club level he played primarily for Llanelli RFC, captaining them for a season. He also represented the Barbarians becoming the most capped Welsh representative of the club. In his later life he became a sports administrator, including the role of vice-president of the Welsh Rugby Union. Rugby historian John Griffiths described Williams as "the finest line-jumper in the world" and "the most accomplished British lock of the 1950s".
Personal history
Williams was born in the small village of Cwmllynfell in 1930. He was educated at Ystalyfera Grammar School and later matriculated to University College, Cardiff. After graduating he joined the RAF as an education officer. On leaving the forces he later becoming a research chemist for the Steel Company of Wales, and finished his professional career in educational administration as an Assistant Director of Education for Mid Glamorgan. He died in 1993 in Whitchurch, Cardiff.
His debut against Sussex saw his 12 overs hit for 68 runs, and though he took the wicket of a well-known player in each of his next two games, against Glamorgan (dismissing Emrys Davies) and Leicestershire (dismissing George Geary), against Gloucestershire his seven overs went for 46, and his first-class career ended there. With the bat he was hapless, scoring a total of seven runs in six innings.
H Williams was a supermarket chain in the Republic of Ireland. H Williams collapsed in 1987, following a price war that led to the 1987 amendment to the Groceries Order in an effort to protect the market from further concentration.
The former H Williams supermarkets were sold to other supermarket chains.
The roentgen (R, also röntgen) is a legacy unit of measurement for the exposure of X-rays and gamma rays up to several megaelectronvolts. It is a measure of the ionization produced in air by X-rays or gamma radiation and it is used because air ionization can be measured directly.
It is named after the German physicist Wilhelm Röntgen, who discovered X-rays. Originating in 1908, this unit has been redefined and renamed over the years. It was last defined by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in 1998 as 2.58×10−4C/kg, (i.e. 1C/kg = 3876R) with a recommendation that the definition be given in every document where the roentgen is used. One roentgen of air kerma (kinetic energy released per unit mass) deposits 0.00877 grays (0.877 rads) of absorbed dose in dry air, or 0.0096Gy (0.96rad) in soft tissue. One roentgen (air kerma) of X-rays may deposit anywhere from 0.01 to 0.04Gy (1.0 to 4.0rad) in bone depending on the beam energy. This tissue-dependent conversion from kerma to absorbed dose is called the F-factor in radiotherapy contexts. The conversion depends on the ionizing energy of a reference medium, which is ambiguous in the latest NIST definition. Even where the reference medium is fully defined, the ionizing energy of the calibration and target mediums are often not precisely known.
Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew:ראש השנה) is the name of a text of Jewish law originating in the Mishnah which formed the basis of tractates in both the Babylonian Talmud and the Jerusalem Talmud of the same name. It is the eighth tractate of the order Moed. The text contains the most important rules concerning the calendar year, together with a description of the inauguration of the months, laws on the form and use of the shofar and laws related to the religious services during the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah.
