Mid Wales (Welsh:Canolbarth Cymru or simply Y Canolbarth "The Midlands") is the name given to the central region of Wales. The Mid Wales Regional Committee of the National Assembly for Wales covered the counties of Ceredigion and Powys and the area of Gwynedd that had previously been the district of Meirionydd. A similar definition is used by the BBC. The Wales Spatial Plan defines a region known as "Central Wales" which covers Ceredigion and Powys. If Mid Wales is classed as Ceredigion and Powys, the area would be 6,962 square kilometres (about the size of Cumbria).
Mid Wales is dominated by the Cambrian Mountains, including the area sometimes referred to as the "Green Desert of Wales". The region is sparsely populated, with an economy dependent on farming and small businesses. The density of the counties of Ceredigion and Powys combined is only 30 people per square kilometre.
Welshpool (Welsh:Y Trallwng) is a town in Wales, historically in the county of Montgomeryshire, but currently administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys. The town is 4 miles (6km) from the Wales–England border and low-lying on the River Severn; its Welsh language name Y Trallwng literally means "the marshy or sinking land". Welshpool is the fourth largest town in Powys.
St Cynfelin (he is also known as St Matu) is reputed to be the founder of the church of St Mary's and St Cynfelin's in the town during "the age of the saints in Wales" in the 5th and 6th centuries.
.wales is one of two country code top level domains for Wales (the other being .cymru) which were put forth by Nominet UK in 2012. Final approval for both top level domains for Wales was granted by ICANN in June 2014.
A phased launch of the new domains was scheduled, with trademark holders being eligible to apply initially. General availability was expected by the spring of 2015. Early adopters of the domains include the Welsh government and male voice choirOnly Men Aloud!.
Wales (i/ˈweɪlz/; Welsh:Cymru[ˈkəm.rɨ]) is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and the island of Great Britain, bordered by England to its east, the Irish Sea to its north and west, and the Bristol Channel to its south. It had a population in 2011 of 3,063,456 and has a total area of 20,779km2 (8,023sqmi). Mid-Wales is a huge, beautiful region, crisscrossed by mountain passes, dotted with characterful little towns and never far from water. Over a weekend in April, I set out to discover the dams in the Elan Valley and how Barnes Wallis who invented the Bouncing Bomb carried out top secret experimental trials on Nant y Gro Dam.
I also visit Aberystwyth and Cwmystwyth along with the Hafod Estate which is one of the most important Picturesque landscapes in Europe. I'll take a walk along Borth beach and it's sunken underwater forest and climb to the highest point in the Cambrian Mountains - Pumlumon Fawr.
My home for the weekend is Felinfawr Lodges in Llangurig which is an exquisite cottage, sitting within an extremely desirable location for my weekend exploring what the area has to offer.

Visiting Wales - A Winter Road Trip To Mid Wales
A trip to the Mid Wales Coast and a stay at Nanteos Country House Hotel.
On this Welsh Road Trip we drive from South Wales to the Mid Wales coast.
First we call at New Quay, a littles seaside town in Ceredigion, Mid Wales. Dylan Thomas lived here during the war and it was used as a location for the film about him “Edge of Love’ starring Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley.
After New Quay we drive up the coast the the town of Aberaeron, which was particularly windy with a storm coming in. We then move up to Aberystwyth.
Because of the weather we go straight to the hotel for the night - Nanteos Country House Hotel which is about 10 minutes from the centre of Aberystwyth.
The hotel, Nanteos Mansion also known Plas Nanteos is an 18th-century grade listed building in its own grounds.

Walking in the Snow | to Llanidloes, Mid Wales
A wonderfully atmospheric short winter walk in the snow. It starts high in the misty hills of the Upper Severn Valley not far from the town of Llanidloes, cutting along field margins and hedgerows, through small copses of trees, and takes in a herd of curious sheep as they try and find food in the eerie snow-covered landscape.
The walk then follows a green lane and dips slowly down towards the town of Llanidloes in Mid Wales. There are some lovely views of the town from up high, before we head down along the green lane in a deep cutting overhung by large trees to the town itself. We emerge at the Short Bridge to cross the River Severn by the old Bridgend Mill (a nineteenth century flannel weaving factory now converted into flats) and former weavers' cottages in High Gate before walking a...

ELAN VALLEY Reservoirs & Dams | Mid Wales Walks
Take a visit to the Elan Valley in Mid Wales and explore the wonderful Elan Valley reservoirs and dams.
The Elan Valley is located in Powys, Mid Wales, not far from the town of Rhayader and features 6 impressive reservoir dams.
We started our trip at the Elan Valley visitor centre, where we picked up a leaflet of one of the Elan Valley walks - a walk known as the Dambusters walk. This circular walk took us to the top of the Caban Coch dam, then we walked alongside the Caban Coch reservoir before return to the Elan Valley visitor centre.
We then decided to do the Elan Valley drive, which allowed us to see more of the Elan Valley dams and Elan Valley reservoirs, including the Garreg Ddu reservoir and Craig Goch dam.

Welshpool to Llanfair in 3 minutes
From Welshpool to Llanfair in just 3 minutes as viewed from the front of W&LLR original locomotive 822 'The Earl'.
This speeded up footage of what is normally a 45 minute journey works out at an average speed of about 160mph but still shows clearly the way our line rises and falls and weaves its way through this beautiful rural landscape. See why the W&LLR has sometimes been called the 'Mid-Wales roller coaster'.

The Long Mountain, which plays as a backdrop to most of Welshpool, once served as the ultimate grounds for defence for fortresses in the times when the town was just a swampy marsh. Welshpool served briefly as the capital of Powys Wenwynwyn or South Powys after its prince was forced to flee the traditional Welsh royal site at Mathrafal in 1212. After 1284 Powys Wenwynwyn ceased to exist.
St Mary's Church is a Grade I listed building. The original church dated from about 1250, there are remains of this church in the lower courses of the church tower. The nave was rebuilt in the 16th century, and the whole building was substantially restored in 1871. The 15th century chancel ceiling may have come from Strata Marcella Abbey, about five miles away, and a stone in the churchyard is said to have been part of the abbot’s throne. A memorial in the church commemorates Bishop William Morgan, translator of the Bible into Welsh, who was the vicar from 1575 to 1579.
The Mermaid Inn, 28 High Street, was very probably an early 16th-century merchant’s house, placed on a burgage plot between the High Street and Alfred Jones Court. The timber-ramed building has long storehouse or wing to the rear. The frontage was remodelled c. 1890, by Frank H. Shayler, architect, of Shrewsbury. Early illustrations of the building show that prior to this it had a thatched roof and that the timbering was not exposed. There is a passage to side with heavy box-framing in square panels, with brick infill exposed in side elevation and in rear wing. The frontage was exposed by Shayler to show decorative timber work on the upper storey. An Inn by the 19th century when it was owned by a family named Sparrow.
Welshpool railway station is on the Cambrian Line and is served by Arriva Trains Wales. The town is also the starting point of the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, a narrow-gauge heritage railway popular with tourists, with its terminus station at Raven Square. The light railway once ran through the town to the Cambrian Line railway station, but today Raven Square, located on the western edge of the town, is the eastern terminus of the line.

Places to see in ( Welshpool - UK )
Welshpool is a town in Wales, historically in the county of Montgomeryshire, but currently administered as part of the unitary authority of Powys. The town is situated 4 miles (6 km) from the Wales–England border and low-lying on the River Severn; its Welsh language name Y Trallwng literally means "the marshy or sinking land". Welshpool is the fourth largest town in Powys.
In English it was initially known as Pool but its name was changed to Welshpool in 1835 to distinguish it from the English town of Poole. See why the W&LLR has sometimes been called the 'Mid-Wales roller coaster'.

After a stay and dinner in a massive room at Nanteos we go back into Aberystwyth early Sunday morning to have a look at the castle.
Before we drive back to South Wales we stop off at Devil's Bridge. The waterfalls at Devils Bridge have attracted visitors since the 18th century, including William Wordsworth and the artist J. M. W. Turner.

One weekend between lockdown's, in August 2020 (Summer... apparently!), I escaped to the Elan Valley, cycled my way around the roads (and some not-so-road-like roads), wild camped, and explored the Cambrian Mountains for the first time - and wow they are stunning!!!

We emerge at the Short Bridge to cross the River Severn by the old Bridgend Mill (a nineteenth century flannel weaving factory now converted into flats) and former weavers' cottages in High Gate before walking along Shortbridge Street towards the Old Market Hall and the end of our walk.
The background ambience clearly changes as the town is approached. Even from a distance the rumble of traffic and the cries of children enjoying a sledging session on the opposite hills, can be heard.
This walk was made in January 2021.

The Elan Valley is full of brilliant Welsh walks - if you like Wales walks then the Elan Valley walks are ideal!

Filmed around 1993 the cameraman takes a stroll around the town capturing many places that no longer here.
Uploaded as part of the Memories of Welshpool project.
