Archbishop on Radio 4 World at One - UK law needs to find accommodation with religious law codes Thursday 7th February 2008
Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable' Dr Rowan Williams says Muslims should have a choice in legal disputes The Archbishop of Canterbury says the adoption of certain aspects of Sharia law in the UK "seems unavoidable".
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/7232661.stm
An interview with Christopher Landau of the BBC Radio 4 'World at One' programme, on the Temple lecture 'Civil and religious law in England: a religious perspective.'
http://rowanwilliams.archbishopofcanterbury.org/articles.php/707/archbishop-on-radio-4-uk-law-needs-to-find-accommodation-with-religious-law-codes.html
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has said that UK law needs to continue to find accommodation with religious legal codes such as the Islamic system of Sharia if community cohesion and development are to be achieved.
Speaking to the BBC ahead of the opening lecture in a series on Islam in English Law being given tonight to legal academics, in which he calls for the legal establishment to engage with these issues, Dr Williams said that the ability of the law of the land to accommodate religious perspectives, as it had already done with the Jewish Halacha, was essential:
"... certain provision of Sharia are already recognised in our society and under our law; so it's not as if we're bringing in an alien and rival system; we already have in this country a number of situations in which the internal law of religious communities is recognised by the law of the land as justified conscientious objections in certain circumstances in providing certain kinds of social relations."
Whilst speaking in the main about principles of Sharia law, the point applied generally to other religious principles:
"We have orthodox Jewish courts operating in this country legally and in a regulated way because there are modes of dispute resolution and customary provisions which apply there in the light of Talmud. It's not a new problem, not to mention the questions ... about how the consciences of Catholics, Anglicans and others who have difficulty over issues like abortion are accommodated within the Law; so the whole idea that there are perfectly proper ways in which the law of the land pays respect to custom and community; that's already there."
That, he said, did not mean that he was advocating the wholesale adoption of Sharia and certainly not the kinds of practical expressions of it seen in some parts of the world:
"... nobody in their right mind, I think, would want to see in this country a kind of inhumanity that sometimes appears to be associated with the practice of the law in some Islamic states [with] the extreme punishments, the attitudes to women as well."
Safeguards he said, were vital and UK law was in a strong position to provide these:
"...I think it would be quite wrong to say that we could ever licence so to speak a system of law for some communities which gave people no right of appeal, no way of exercising the rights that are guaranteed to them as citizens in general."
UK law needed to engage properly with the religious concerns and motivations of members of the communities which made up society he said;
"What we don't want I think is either a stand-off where the law squares up to religious consciences over something like abortion or indeed by forcing a vote on some aspects of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill in the commons as it were a secular discourse saying 'we have no room for conscientious objections'; we don't want that, we don't either I think want a situation where because there's no way of legally monitoring what communities do, making them part of public process, people do what they like in private in such a way that that becomes a way of intensifying oppression within a community and that happens; that happens."
A full transcript of the interview follows:
Christopher Landau To begin with you've given this vision of if as a nation Britain wants to achieve social cohesion, that challenge is how to accommodate those of religious faith in relation to the law; and you're words are that the application of Sharia in certain circumstances if we want to achieve this cohesion and take seriously peoples' religion seems unavoidable?

The sad truth about Canterbury! 🇬🇧
It's no secret that Canterbury is one of the UK's top tourist destinations. And for good reason, it has the incredibly beautiful church, founded by Augustine of Canterbury in 597 AD. Quaint rivers and tons of nice cafes.
However Canterbury has another side which you haven't seen yet.
It's been ranked as the second worst place in Kent, putting technically worse than the likes of Gravesend, Sheerness, Ramsgate.
In this video we explore both sides of Canterbury and give an insight into what it's like to visit here from a tourist perspective, and live here from a local perspective.

Archbishop of Canterbury resigns over Church of England abuse scandal | BBC News
The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby has resigned following a report into a child abuser associated with the Church of England.
In his resignation statement, Welby said the report "exposed the long-maintained conspiracy of silence about the heinous abuses of John Smyth".
He added, when he was told in 2013 that Smyth had been reported to police, "I believed wrongly that an appropriate resolution would follow".

Canterbury gets its first ever Labour MP
The biggest upset of election night came in Canterbury. It has been Conservative for 99 years - its former MP had a majority of nearly 10 thousand.
All that was swept away by a Labour surge. It is another city with a large population of students - but it wasn't just Labour's promise of scrapping tuition fees that won the day.

Young voters play role in Canterbury elex upset
(9 Jun 2017) In a stunning blow to the conservatives, Canterbury has elected a Labour MP for the first time since the constituency was formed nearly a century ago.
The historic English town in the heart of Kent has always been a Tory stronghold - but Sunday's vote saw incumbent Sir Julian Brazier lose to Rosie Duffield by just 187 votes.
Increased student participation in the election is being seen as a key factor in the shock result
"I was very excited actually. Very surprised", said Nicholas Hubble, a 19-year-old Labour voter who traveled down from Exeter where he studied to vote back home.
With tens of thousands of European nationals visiting, studying or living in the city, 23-year-old George Dabaasio also believes Brexit played a big role.

Policing and the Prevention of Violence Against Women - Home Secretary Priti Patel - 15 March 2021
Priti Patel MP, Secretary of State for the Home Department, will update the House of Commons on Policing and the Prevention of Violence Against Women.
Ministerial statements are a way for Ministers to bring an important matter to the attention of the House, often at short notice. Government Ministers may make oral statements to Parliament which usually address major incidents, government policies or actions. These take place after Oral Questions and any granted Urgent Questions. After making a statement the Minister responds to questions on its topic from MPs. An hour is allocated for this. Commons statements will sometimes be repeated in the Lords at an appropriate time to fit in with the main business.

Who Can I Vote For?: Canterbury
The UK General Election in 2024 uses the new electoral boundaries. Only 65 of the 650 seats are staying the same. Some seats are new, while some are abolished. In these videos we look at why boundaries are changing, a summary of the new constituency including demographics and geography, how the population of the new constituency is formed from the old seats. Then we get into the politics. We present the results for each of the constituencies in 2019, then look at the trends for the main seat that is being replaced. For the main seat, we look who won, who came second, and the majority. We look at the graph of the vote share for the last 4 elections. Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad...

ITV Election Debate - Key moments
Labour’s plan to launch a tax raid on private schools is “crazy” and will drive more children into the state sector, Penny Mordaunt warned on Thursday.
During the seven-party debate hosted by ITV newsreader Julie Etchingham, the Leader of the Commons said Sir Keir Starmer’s proposal “doesn’t serve anyone” and is “the kind of dogma we need to keep out of the public sector”.
Addressing Angela Rayner during the event, she said: “What Angela and the Labour Party are going to do is, unbelievably, they are going to tax education”.

With tens of thousands of European nationals visiting, studying or living in the city, 23-year-old George Dabaasio also believes Brexit played a big role.
During the 2016 EU referendum, Canterbury voted to leave the EU by 51 percent but many young people didn't turn up to vote.
With students and staff from about 150 different countries, Edwards Morgan-Jones a Senior Lecturer at Kent University believes people were "very worried about the effect of the government's approach of Brexit on the university".
But to some extent, it also comes down to the numbers.
"We had 10 percent more voters than in 2015 and those voters were mainly younger voters", he said.
The reason for this surge can partly be attributed to university unions who went out and actively encourages students to register to vote.
For first year political science student, Toby French, what inspired him was the way the Labour party reached out to youth using popular platforms.
But for Tory voters, the defeat was a devastating blow. 67-year-old Sheryl Barker says she's angry at the students and the universities who she believes influenced them.

Then we list the final list of candidates and make a prediction for the 2024 winner based on predictions using an optimistic scenario and a bad day for the Conservatives.
