Qiu (丘) is a common surname in China. It is also one of the most influential surnames in Taiwan, as well as the Sichuan and Fujian provinces in the South China region.
The surname has several historical origins:
In 1046 BC, King Wu of the Zhou dynasty overthrew the Shang dynasty with the help of his adviser, Jiang Ziya. Jiang's clan later settled in the Fufeng County of Shaanxi, where they took the name of the then-capital, Qiu, as their surname. Their descendants bore this surname until the reign of the Yongzheng Emperor (1677-1735) in the Qing dynasty, when some adopted the written form 邱 to distinguish it from the name of Confucius (孔丘). However, the change was mostly adopted by Hokkiens while the Hakkas generally refused. Many Hakkas who refused the change were then prosecuted by the Qing government. It was only after the fall of the Qing dynasty and establishment of the Republic of China in 1912, that some members of the Qiu (邱) family reverted to their ancient surname Qiu (丘)
Qiú is the Hanyu Pinyin transliteration of the 仇(Qiú) and 裘(Qiú).

There are three sources for the ancestry of 仇:
A Xia vassal by the name of Jiuwu (九吾) established the state of Jiu (九), but it was destroyed by King Zhou of Shang in the Shang Dynasty. To escape prosecution, the descendents of Jiuwu appended the 人 ("person") radical to 九 (Jiu), thus creating the surname 仇.
In the Spring and Autumn Period, Duke Min of Song (宋湣公) was murdered by his subordinate Nangong Wan (南宮萬). The minister Zi Qiumu (子仇牧) sought revenge but was also killed by Nangong Wan. Zi Qiumu's descendants then took the first character of his name, Qiu 仇, to be their surname.
In Northern Wei, a Hou Luoqi (侯洛齊) of Zhongshan was adopted by the Qiu clan, and thus changed his surname from Hou to Qiu. He rose in ranks due to his military endeavours, and the Qiu clan became prosperous at the time.
Research published in 2021 by Xu Qi, a professor at the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Nanjing University, showed that only 1.4 percent of those born between 1986 and 2005 took their mothers' surnames.
