Georgetown College is located in the Bluegrass region of Central Kentucky, 12 miles north of Lexington, KY, approximately 70 miles east of Louisville, KY, and 75 miles south of Cincinnati, Ohio.
History
Georgetown College traces its roots to Royal Springs Academy, a classical school founded by Baptist minister Elijah Craig in Georgetown in 1787. The institution was renamed Rittenhouse Academy in 1798 as part of a land grant agreement, and was led by Barton Stone, a co-founder of the Stone Campbell Movement, 1816–19. The academy declined and closed by 1829.
In 1829, the Kentucky General Assembly chartered the Kentucky Baptist Education Society with the purpose of establishing a Baptist college in the state. Twenty-four trustees under the leadership of Silas Noel selected the town of Georgetown as the site for the new school. Georgetown was selected because the community agreed to raise $20,000 and to donate the assets of the recently closed Rittenhouse Academy.
Former theology professor Chester Gillis is the Dean of the College, a position he was named to after initially serving as interim Dean while a search committee, led by University President John J. DeGioia and Provost James J. O'Donnell was underway. The previous dean, Jane Dammen McAuliffe, left to become the President of Bryn Mawr College. Alone, the college accounts for over 3,200 students, 30 academic majors with 23 departments. This forms the core of the undergraduate population.
The President and Directors of Georgetown College is the governing body of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. In contrast to the Board of Regents and the Board of Governors, which serve advancement and alumni affairs functions, respectively, as well as advisory roles to the President, the President and Directors of Georgetown College is the legal entity of the incorporated Georgetown University. The authority of the body is enumerated in the 1815 federal charter of Georgetown University passed by the Thirteenth United States Congress and signed by President James Madison. The corporate charter of the University was amended by "An Act to Incorporate Georgetown College in the District of Columbia" in 1844. The legal name of the University was clarified by Public Law 89-631 passed by the 89th Congress and signed by President Lyndon Johnson on October 4, 1966, which authorized the institution to operate under the style of "Georgetown University" and permitted the University to exercise the powers granted to nonprofit corporations under the "District of Columbia Nonprofit Corporation Act" of 1962.
