Widely admired for his strong leadership qualities, Washington was unanimously elected president in the first two national elections. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the French Revolutionary Wars, suppressed the Whiskey Rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. Washington's incumbency established many precedents, still in use today, such as the cabinet system, the inaugural address, and the title Mr. President. His retirement from office after two terms established a tradition that lasted until 1940, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term. The 22nd Amendment (1951) now limits the president to eight years in office.
The city is known for being near the Gorge Amphitheatre, sometimes called "The Gorge at George". The Gorge Amphitheatre is the host of the annual Sasquatch! Music Festival.
The city also celebrates national holidays such as the Fourth of July, and Washington's Birthday, with cherry pies. It bakes the world's largest cherry pie every year on July 4, and serves it to the crowd.
History
George began as a large irrigation district between Quincy and Moses Lake. In the early 1950s, the need for a town to support the local agriculture business was evident, and the Bureau of Land Management agreed to 339 acres (1.37km2) for this purpose. The winning (and only) bid was that of the local pharmacist, Charlie Brown. Brown invested his own money into the venture, and with help from a University of Washington instructor, the town structure was planned. The plan included streets, utilities, etc.
The statue depicts Washington dressed in breeches with an apron and medallion decorated with Masonic symbols. Washington holds a tri-cornered hat in the crook of his proper left arm, and a gavel in his proper right hand. He wears an open overcoat with buttons and has a short podium to his proper right. Washington's attire depicts the first President as he may have looked when he laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The sculpture is mounted upon a stepped, inscribed granite base.
The base of the sculpture is inscribed with the following:
General George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. President Washington entered office with the full support of the national and state leadership, and established the executive and judicial branches of the federal government of the United States. His leadership guaranteed the survival of the United States as a powerful and independent nation, and set the standard for future presidents.
Washington proved an able administrator. An excellent delegator and judge of talent and character, he held regular cabinet meetings to debate issues before making a final decision. In handling routine tasks, he was "systematic, orderly, energetic, solicitous of the opinion of others but decisive, intent upon general goals and the consistency of particular actions with them."

Ep. 204 - George Washington's Vision For National Government
Winning a war was just the beginning for George Washington’s service to our new country. After retiring to Mount Vernon post-war, Washington saw a weakness in our country under the Articles of Confederation. He felt the future of republican democratic self-government globally was dependent on the American experiment. If it were to fail in that perfect post-war moment, man was probably not destined to govern himself. Not only is George Washington single handedly the most important person to the founding of the United States, I’d argue he’s the most important person in American history.
After the American Revolution, he easily could have been a king since Americans loved him so much. The world had known pretty nothing but kings throughout most of human history. But nope, George turned it down. He had no ambitions to be a king.
Washington was an undeniably outstanding leader. Sure, big reasons why included his charisma and command for attention, as well as his virtue, dignity, and open mindedness. But his greatest strength was that he was a Uniter. He was the glue that kept the factions together in the early years of the Republic, and the perfect person for the job of guiding the new country as it attempted to figure out how to move forward.

In this digital exclusive from "Washington" learn how George Washington took the framework of the constitution and forged history as the first president of the United States of America.

Washington’s views on what the government should look like can seem to be contradictory in that he wanted a strong central government, as opposed to what the country had under the Articles of Confederation, but he also wanted the National government to be limited. Rather than contradictory, this reveals a principled man. To discuss Washington’s vision for the country with our student panel, we are delighted to welcome back Tony Williams, Senior Teaching Fellow with the Bill of Rights Instiutute for this historical conversation.

He was the glue that kept the factions together in the early years of the Republic, and the perfect person for the job of guiding the new country as it attempted to figure out how to move forward.
I am burning in a smoke-choked house but Tonight is empty of warm glows and whispered good nights Riot, disorder, set the banks on fire Some old war song used to play here Once I heard it and the sound it made was sad but hopeful
If GeorgeWashington wanted to be my favorite president, then instead of offing a cherry tree, he would have chopped down every peach orchard in the United States....

If GeorgeWashington wanted to be my favorite president, then instead of offing a cherry tree, he would have chopped down every peach orchard in the United States...Today, I demand that all peaches be consigned to the compost heap of history.
