Daddy had a rant in the shed one night
Goin' off about federal hall
While workin' on the mower
And workin' on a bottle of rum
I passed him a socket, a nine sixteenths
With a three and a quarter inch drive
This is how it was when he was still alive
With a fire in his eye, he let out a cry
"Damn crooks in federal hall
The pricks on the hill
Dont care about you and me
I'll vote for the man
Who gathers the parties
And takes them out to sea
To dump em in the ocean
Where the rest of the garbage goes"
"I've taken time to think about it
The profiteers will raid the gold"

Daddy had a rant in the shed one night

And takes them out to sea
To dump em in the ocean
Where the rest of the garbage goes"
"I've taken time to think about it
The profiteers will raid the gold"
CHORUS
"They're fuckin' with our money son"
With my hat in my hand,
I was taking a stand
I ran for federal hall
Mad at the world and full of grim resolve
I told the old man not to worry,
Not to fret that I intended to be
A man of the people
And he'd be proud of me
Now you won't have to think about it
The profiteers won't raid the gold
CHORUS
Twenty years later
I'm a mover and shaker
And banished to federal hall
Playing two bit games
And arguing for nothing at all
Biding my time, nothing on the line
A shadow of what I should be
Now daddy's in heaven
And he ain't proud of me
I've had some time to think about it
My daddy said they'd raid the gold

Moderator Margaret Hoover, Host of PBS Firing Line, is joined by David Daley, bestselling author of Ratf**ked: Why Your Vote Doesn't Count; David Frum, senior editor, The Atlantic; and Jason Torchinsky, senior adviser and general counsel, National Republican Redistricting Trust, for a big picture look at the House of Representatives, addressing the fundamental question: is it representing Americans as the framers and the Constitution intended? They discuss the factors involved in representation in the House – with a focus on the actions and solutions being proposed now across the political spectrum.
The Constitution established the House of Representatives to reflect the political will of each state’s populace, but how has that actually worked? From the country's very first Congressional election in 1788, political opponents have tried to control the shape of districts for their own advantage. And who votes within each district is decisive to the outcome. With the decennial redistricting process getting underway, and state legislatures considering a slew of voting regulations in response to the record voter turnout of the 2020 elections, what are the considerations for American democracy?
The House of Representatives first convened at Federal Hall on March 4, 1789. Through the centuries, legislation has attempted to clarify and mandate equity in representation, responding to such monumental changes as the 14th Amendment as well as major national population shifts.
Federal Hall adviser Sam Roberts introduced the program, which was co-presented with the Cornell Institute of Politics and Global Affairs.
DEBATE DEFENDS DEMOCRACY is presented by the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy at Federal Hall in partnership with New York University and the National Park Service.
