The critical positivity ratio (also known as the Losada ratio or the Losada line) is a largely discredited concept in positive psychology positing an exact ratio of positive to negative emotions which distinguishes "flourishing" people from "languishing" people. The ratio was proposed by Marcial Losada and psychologist Barbara Fredrickson, who identified a ratio of positive to negative affect of exactly 2.9013 as separating flourishing from languishing individuals in a 2005 paper in American Psychologist. The concept of a critical positivity ratio was widely embraced by both academic psychologists and the lay public; Fredrickson and Losada's paper was cited nearly 1,000 times, and Fredrickson wrote a popular book expounding the concept of "the 3-to-1 ratio that will change your life". Fredrickson wrote: "Just as zero degrees Celsius is a special number in thermodynamics, the 3-to-1 positivity ratio may well be a magic number in human psychology."
In mathematics, the concept of sign originates from the property of every non-zero real number to be positive or negative. Zero itself is signless, although in some contexts it makes sense to consider a signed zero. Along its application to real numbers, "change of sign" is used throughout mathematics and physics to denote the additive inverse (multiplication to −1), even for quantities which are not real numbers (so, which are not prescribed to be either positive, negative, or zero). Also, the word "sign" can indicate aspects of mathematical objects that resemble positivity and negativity, such as the sign of a permutation (see below).
Sign of a number
Every number has multiple attributes (such as value, sign and magnitude). A real number is said to be positive if its value (not its magnitude) is greater than zero, and negative if it is less than zero. The attribute of being positive or negative is called the sign of the number. Zero itself is not considered to have a sign (though this is context dependent, see below). Also, signs are not defined for complex numbers, although the argument generalizes it in some sense.
The single is a big departure from the sleazy rock characteristic of the previous two albums, and has a far more warm and acoustic sound to it. The single had various producers: "Positivity" was produced by John Leckie, "One Love", "Superstar" and "Colours" were produced by Stephen Street, "Simon" was produced by Suede and Ken Thomas, "Cheap" was produced by Suede and Dick Meaney while "Campfire Song" was produced by Suede and Alex Silva. Initially Brett Anderson liked the song and considered it one of his favourites on the album prior to its release. On the song Anderson said it's about "someone who's really close to me, who doesn't have much in life but manages to deal with it incredibly well." The video for the title song was directed by Julian Gibbs.
Reception
The single garnered mixed reviews from fans and critics. Even Brett Anderson would become very self-critical of the song. Anderson said: "When I first wrote it I thought it was a masterpiece but soon realized that many people were genuinely offended by it." One NME writer felt that Suede's time was up and hinted that they should disperse, saying "For the love of God chaps, you still have fans. Go quietly now, and they'll remain true."
