It has a 669-seat theatre, a 1,500 seat concert hall, a 150-seat studio, a 105-seat cinema, an Image Lab/media suite, a large gallery for photography and digital art, a restaurant and three function rooms. The concert hall is home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
History, development and funding
The Poole Arts Centre (Towngate Theatre, Wessex Hall and Ashley Cinema) opened in April 1978 to serve the South East Dorset conurbation. The venue closed in May 2002 for an £8.5 million radical refurbishment and overhaul. This was paid for by Arts Council Lottery Awards, the Borough of Poole and through private donations. It reopened as Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts in October 2002. The refurbishment added new extensive facilities including a modern cinema, expanded concert hall and photography labs. Other additions included expanded customer facilities and a new restaurant.
An art centre or arts center is distinct from an art gallery or art museum. An arts centre is a functional community centre with a specific remit to encourage arts practice and to provide facilities such as theatre space, gallery space, venues for musical performance, workshop areas, educational facilities, technical equipment, etc.
In the United States, "art centers" are generally either establishments geared toward exposing, generating, and making accessible art making to arts-interested individuals, or buildings that rent primarily to artists, galleries, or companies involved in art making.
In Britain, art centres began after World War II and gradually changed from mainly middle-class places to 1960s and 1970s trendy, alternative centres and eventually in the 1980s to serving the whole community with a programme of enabling access to wheelchair users and disabled individuals and groups.
In the rest of Europe it is common among most art centres that they are partly government funded, since they are considered to have a positive influence on society and economics according to the Rhineland model philosophy. A lot of those organisations originally started in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s as squading spaces and were later on legalized.
Poolei/puːl/ is a large coastal town and seaport in the county of Dorset, on the south coast of England. The town is 33 kilometres (21mi) east of Dorchester, and Bournemouth adjoins Poole to the east. The local council is Borough of Poole and was made a unitary authority in 1997, gaining administrative independence from Dorset County Council. The borough had a population of 147,645 according to the 2011 census, making it the second largest settlement in Dorset. Together with Bournemouth and Christchurch, the town forms the South East Dorset conurbation with a total population of over 465,000.
Human settlement in the area dates back to before the Iron Age. The earliest recorded use of the town's name was in the 12th century when the town began to emerge as an important port, prospering with the introduction of the wool trade. In later centuries the town had important trade links with North America and at its peak in the 18th century it was one of the busiest ports in Britain. During the Second World War, the town was one of the main departing points for the D-Day landings of the Normandy Invasion.
The first version of the Poole constituency existed from 1455 until 1885. During this period its exact status was a parliamentary borough, sending two burgesses to Westminster per year, except during its last 17 years when its representation was reduced to one member.
During its abeyance most of Poole was in the East Dorset seat and since its recreation in 1950 its area has been reduced as the harbour town's population has increased.
The borough is an economically very diverse borough. In the centre and north are a significant minority of Output Areas which in 2001 had high rankings in the Index of Multiple Deprivation, contributing in 2012 with the remainder to producing for Poole the highest unemployment of the constituencies in the county. However, Canford Cliffs is epitomised by one sub-neighbourhood, Sandbanks with its multi-million pound properties, the coastline area has been dubbed as "Britain's Palm Beach" by the national media. Alongside oil extraction, insurance, care, retail and customer service industries choosing the town as their base tourism contributes to overall a higher income than the national average, however the divergence is not statistically significant and the size of homes varies extensively.
The Lighthouse is an arts centre in Poole, Dorset. According to Arts Council England it is the largest arts centre in the UK outside of London. We're here from 15-19th March 2022.

Joined by our good friends Lee MacKenzie, John Parker and Evan Carson on cello, double bass and percussion, we are going to be serving up something absolutely incredible to end the year on:
- Never-before-heard arrangements
- Full theatrical lighting
- Audio professionally captured by our producer Mark Tucker
- Front of house and onstage sound from Richard Hewlett
- Better video quality than ever before
In short? This show is going to blow your socks off 😎 and we cannot wait to share it with you!

Jaddaf art park is the United Arab Emirates first open-air art park.
waiwai designed the park as an open public space with no fence to encourage social interaction through art. It welcomes Dubai’s diverse cultural community to gather around art and engage in a public dialogue. Given the sensitive desert climate of the gulf, it is designed mainly as a fluid hardscape with a selection of regional plants that require minimal irrigation. In addition to the given artwork, we introduced facilities that further engage the public. These facilities include a 200-seat amphitheatre, a children’s sand playground, a food stall area shaded by umbrellas as well as built-in board game tables. The artworks and facilities are arranged to follow a water ripple-like, hidden circular geometry. That allows for an organic pedestrian flow, seamlessly connecting to the colonnade around the arts centre and the corniche along the creek. Our selection of the green and yellow pre-cast tiles correlates with our design selection of the pearlescent façade panels of the art centre.

waiwai designed the park as an open public space with no fence to encourage social interaction through art.

The Ninebarrow Band @ Lighthouse, Poole
www.ninebarrow.co.uk/live
With another live Q&A from Jon and Jay after the show!
WATCH LIVE WITH THE COMMUNITY ON THE 12TH OR USE YOUR e-TICKET TO ACCESS THE CONCERT 'AS-LIVE' FOR 7 DAYS AFTER BROADCAST!
Along with the rest of the world, Ninebarrow began a very strange journey in March this year. During the course of the last 9 months, we've had to create a completely new way to bring our music to you all. We started small - in the dining room! We grew...into the living room! Then we expanded into a soggy field in North Dorset. And last time, we brought you a concert from a beautiful candlelit church nestled up in the Purbeck hills.
For our SEVENTH online broadcast, we're going to be taking things to a whole new level as we bring you THE NINEBARROW BAND, filmed live at Lighthouse Poole. This is the show we would have toured in March, had the pandemic not scuppered our plans!

Antony Costa, Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe, more widely known as Blue, have sold 15 million records worldwide. In the UK they’ve had three number 1 albums, ten top 10 singles (including three number 1's), won Brit and MTV Asia Awards and have sung with Elton John and Stevie Wonder.
They formed in London in the year 2000 and had their first hit All Rise in 2001 – a track which still sounds amazing today over 20 years later. Their first appearance came on the Big Breakfast, where as an unknown band they were the ‘family of the week’ appearing on the show from Monday to Friday, and then performed on live TV for the first time that Saturday on CDUK. By the time the track entered the top 10, fans were flocking to see them and Blue fever started!
Their debut album also called ‘All Rise’ spawned four top 10 singles, including the number 1’s ‘Too Close’ and ‘if you come back’ and the excellent ‘Flyby’. The album hit number 1, sold over a million copies and in under a year the band played their first fully live gig with a band at the MTV 5 night stand series of gigs in April 2002, the band having just won their first Brit Award for British Breakthrough act.
Concert hall seated to flat for BSO recording purposes. Floor raises up to back stage level but not to full height to reach front entrances on this occasion.

The Jameel Arts Centre is an exhibition space, artist residence, and creative enterprise incubator overlooking Dubai Creek.
Conceived as a family of forms bounded by a colonnade, its massing and spatiality draws from the rich architectural tradition of the region. The colonnade is an active social space, framing gardens and enlivening the waterfront promenade.
Courtyards are galleries of nature, places for gardens and sculpture. And they are spaces of repose between galleries.
The Centre’s design fragments the courtyard, continually layering a relationship between inside and outside, art and nature.
