Richard William Ewart Poole was the first man to cycle from Land's End to John o'Groats, the length of mainland Britain, in less than two days. He then beat the 1,000-mile record... only to find he was a few yards too short.
Background
Dick Poole was a talented time-triallist—a competitor against the clock over fixed distances—living in west London. He was a member of Middlesex Road Club. A meeting with another enthusiast, a model-maker and weekend cycling journalist called Bernard Thompson, led to a plan in 1965 to try for the longest place-to-place record in Britain: Land's End to John o'Groats.
Cyclists had been trying the ride since at least July 1880, when H Blackwell and C A Harman of the Canonbury Bicycle Club rode from Cornwall to Caithness in 13 days. The first formal attempt was by George Pilkington Mills, who rode a penny-farthing with a 52-inch wheel for 5d1h45m in July 1886, when he was 19. The Road Records Association formed two years later to formalise attempts. It ruled that riders were free to take whatever route they preferred provided they covered the distance. That proved critical in Poole's ride and in the challenge that ended his record.
Poole played junior football at the De La Salle school in Marrickville and then with the Earlwood Christian Youth Organisation before being graded with Newtown in 1949. Initially he played mainly in reserve grade with occasional first grade appearances up until 1952 when he established himself as a centre in the top grade.
He was captain-coach of Newtown in 1955 when they went down by one point to South Sydney in the Grand Final. He played for 133 games for Newtown over nine seasons till 1958, the last four seasons as captain-coach. In 1959 he moved to the Western Suburbs Magpies for his last two seasons.
Representative career
He first represented for New South Wales in 1954. Following his Kangaroo Tour appearances of 1957 he was selected as captain-coach of New South Wales in 1957.
Poolei/puːl/ is a large coastal town and seaport in the county of Dorset, on the south coast of England. The town is 33 kilometres (21mi) east of Dorchester, and Bournemouth adjoins Poole to the east. The local council is Borough of Poole and was made a unitary authority in 1997, gaining administrative independence from Dorset County Council. The borough had a population of 147,645 according to the 2011 census, making it the second largest settlement in Dorset. Together with Bournemouth and Christchurch, the town forms the South East Dorset conurbation with a total population of over 465,000.
Human settlement in the area dates back to before the Iron Age. The earliest recorded use of the town's name was in the 12th century when the town began to emerge as an important port, prospering with the introduction of the wool trade. In later centuries the town had important trade links with North America and at its peak in the 18th century it was one of the busiest ports in Britain. During the Second World War, the town was one of the main departing points for the D-Day landings of the Normandy Invasion.
The first version of the Poole constituency existed from 1455 until 1885. During this period its exact status was a parliamentary borough, sending two burgesses to Westminster per year, except during its last 17 years when its representation was reduced to one member.
During its abeyance most of Poole was in the East Dorset seat and since its recreation in 1950 its area has been reduced as the harbour town's population has increased.
The borough is an economically very diverse borough. In the centre and north are a significant minority of Output Areas which in 2001 had high rankings in the Index of Multiple Deprivation, contributing in 2012 with the remainder to producing for Poole the highest unemployment of the constituencies in the county. However, Canford Cliffs is epitomised by one sub-neighbourhood, Sandbanks with its multi-million pound properties, the coastline area has been dubbed as "Britain's Palm Beach" by the national media. Alongside oil extraction, insurance, care, retail and customer service industries choosing the town as their base tourism contributes to overall a higher income than the national average, however the divergence is not statistically significant and the size of homes varies extensively.

"For those who haven't come to auctions before, they will be very entertained by Alasdair Nichol and very impressed by his expertise," said Poole. "I hope it will be an experience for many who have no intention whatsoever (of purchasing) once they get there to see the excitement of an auction and see that many of the paintings will go for very reasonable prices."
In planning the auction, it was decided the event would be held with no reserve values attached to the lots. This means there will be no minimum bids.
"A painting that may be worth $1,000 could well go for $100 or $200," said Poole, who predicts there will be bargains to be had. "And that is good because if someone gets a good buy and enjoys the painting in his or her home, over the years, that will be gratifying to me because it will increase someone's appreciation for art (and) it will be good for Habitat for Humanity."
The auction begins at 7 p.m. with a preview party scheduled at
5:30 p.m.

As part of its 'Transform the Business' initiative, Poole Dick wanted to re-position itself in the market place to help it to win new business in new industry sectors, whilst at the same time maintaining its excellent and long-standing reputation in existing sectors.
Distinction Consulting conducted a UK wide strategic marketing review for Poole Dick. This included extensive competitor and market research, confidential employee feedback and an objective in-depth review of its clients and other stakeholders.
Outcomes
Amongst other things, Distinction's work identified a number of core competencies and marketing assets which were difficult for competitors to emulate. There were some weaknesses and areas of under-performance but these were not insurmountable and had the potential to be converted to strengths - such as the firm's failure to inform clients of the scope and diversity of its service offer. Several growth opportunities were identified, many of which did not require high levels of investment and could be realised by developing existing relationships with clients, architects and other construction professionals. A marketing action plan was recommended.
Key Facts
• Project management and QS consultancy, established over 60 years
• Wanted to re-position and win new business in new sectors
• Distinction conducted strategic marketing review with 'truly amazing' results
• Poole Dick adopted a more pro-active and focused approach to the market
• Now entering new industry sectors, winning profitable new business and preparing
for a corporate re-brand
