It has a 669-seat theatre, a 1,500 seat concert hall, a 150-seat studio, a 105-seat cinema, an Image Lab/media suite, a large gallery for photography and digital art, a restaurant and three function rooms. The concert hall is home to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
History, development and funding
The Poole Arts Centre (Towngate Theatre, Wessex Hall and Ashley Cinema) opened in April 1978 to serve the South East Dorset conurbation. The venue closed in May 2002 for an £8.5 million radical refurbishment and overhaul. This was paid for by Arts Council Lottery Awards, the Borough of Poole and through private donations. It reopened as Lighthouse, Poole's Centre for the Arts in October 2002. The refurbishment added new extensive facilities including a modern cinema, expanded concert hall and photography labs. Other additions included expanded customer facilities and a new restaurant.
The Lighthouse Tower is a supertall, commercial skyscraper to be built in Dubai, United Arab Emirates designed by multi-national architectural firm Atkins. It will be constructed in the DIFC, is set rise to 402 m (1,319 feet) and have 66 floors. The tower is a Green Building with a huge emphasis put on reducing its carbon footprint and conserving energy.
The tower rises as two separate towers, bridged from level 10, all the way up to approximately 300 meters above ground. The structure is to hold a number of skygardens. Construction was suspended in 2009.
Environmental aspects
There will be three large 225kW wind turbines, 29 meters in diameter, on the building's south facing side in order to generate electricity. These turbines will have the freedom to yaw, in order to maximize power generation. It will also be clad in 4,000 solar panels to generate additional electricity. The tower will also reduce its overall energy consumption by 65%, and its water consumption by 40% in comparison to an equivalent building. At the building's base, a four story glass lobby will house an environmental visitor center. It was designed by the Atkins group.
The Lighthouse is a 2005 novel by P. D. James, the thirteenth book in the classic Adam Dalgliesh mystery series.
Plot summary
Adam Dalgliesh is brought in to investigate the mysterious death of a famous writer on a remote and inaccessible island off the Cornish coast.
Combe Island is a discreet retreat operated by a private trust, where the rich and powerful find peace and quiet. Famed novelist Nathan Oliver, who was born on the island and thus is allowed to visit as he wishes, arrives with his daughter, Miranda and his copy-editor, Dennis Tremlett, who, unbeknownst to Oliver, are having an affair. When he discovers them, Oliver reacts with fury and orders them to leave the island the next day.
Several people on the island find Oliver an unpleasant guest. The writer is pressuring the manager of the Combe Island Trust, Rupert Maycroft, to allow him to live in a cottage used by the sole remaining member of the family that owned the island for many years. The manager's secretary, a disgraced Anglican priest named Adrian Boyde, a recovering alcoholic, was tricked into "falling off the wagon" by Oliver, and many people are disgusted with Oliver for his heartless, evil actions. Oliver is also confronted at dinner by a scientist, Dr. Mark Yelland, who believes himself to be the model for an unpleasant character in Oliver's upcoming book.
Poolei/puːl/ is a large coastal town and seaport in the county of Dorset, on the south coast of England. The town is 33 kilometres (21mi) east of Dorchester, and Bournemouth adjoins Poole to the east. The local council is Borough of Poole and was made a unitary authority in 1997, gaining administrative independence from Dorset County Council. The borough had a population of 147,645 according to the 2011 census, making it the second largest settlement in Dorset. Together with Bournemouth and Christchurch, the town forms the South East Dorset conurbation with a total population of over 465,000.
Human settlement in the area dates back to before the Iron Age. The earliest recorded use of the town's name was in the 12th century when the town began to emerge as an important port, prospering with the introduction of the wool trade. In later centuries the town had important trade links with North America and at its peak in the 18th century it was one of the busiest ports in Britain. During the Second World War, the town was one of the main departing points for the D-Day landings of the Normandy Invasion.

Along with the rest of the world, Ninebarrow began a very strange journey in March this year. During the course of the last 9 months, we've had to create a completely new way to bring our music to you all. We started small - in the dining room! We grew...into the living room! Then we expanded into a soggy field in North Dorset. And last time, we brought you a concert from a beautiful candlelit church nestled up in the Purbeck hills.
