Plumstead is a district of south east London located in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. It is located east of Woolwich and south west of Thamesmead.
Plumstead is a multicultural area with large Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities, in similarity to local areas such as Woolwich and Thamesmead. Plumstead is the location for a large bus garage built in 1981 on former industrial land and a substantial Church of England parish church dedicated to St Nicholas.
History
10th and 11th century
Much of the early history of Plumstead can be found in Edward Hasted's extensive history of Kent. In 960 King Edgar gave four plough lands, collectively called Plumstead, to a monastery - St Augustine's Abbey near Canterbury, Kent. These were subsequently taken from the monastery by Earl Godwin for his fourth son, Tostig.
King Edward the Confessor restored them again to the monastery on taking power, however Tostig saw the opportunity to take possession of them once again after Edward's death in 1066 when King Harold seized his brother's estates.
Plumstead (1855–1894) and then Lee (1894–1900) was a local government district within the metropolitan area of London from 1855 to 1900. It was formed as the Plumstead district by the Metropolis Management Act 1855 and was governed by the Plumstead District Board of Works, which consisted of elected vestrymen.
Until 1889 the district was in the county of Kent, but included in the area of the Metropolitan Board of Works. In 1889 the area of the MBW was constituted the County of London, and the District Board became a local authority under the London County Council. In 1894 the parish of Plumstead was removed from the district to be governed by a parish vestry and the district was renamed Lee.
Under the Metropolis Management Act 1855 any parish that exceeded 2,000 ratepayers was to be divided into wards; however the parishes of Plumstead District Board of Works did not exceed this number so were not divided into wards.

Plumstead is a south east London district inside the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
Like many other districts in this area, it was once under the jurisdiction of Kent.
Plumstead is almost entirely a suburb of the industrial town of Woolwich. For centuries, it had a population of approximately 1000 people who made their living from fishing and agriculture despite the fact that the name Plumstead means "the place where the plums grow".
In later years, housing development and the population of Plumstead began to increase exponentially. The residents were mostly workers helping to develop the expanding Royal Arsenal area of Woolwich and the Siemens industrial development in Charlton.
In 1876, they tried to build even more housing across Plumstead Common but it was met with strong resistance and the plans flopped. Two years later, Plumstead Common was given its own Act of law to protect it as public open space forever.
Plumstead has a mainline train station but it's much better served by buses since it's home to over a dozen routes via its large bus garage which was built and has been operational since 1981.
In 2015, Plumstead was named as the cheapest rental district in London according to a survey conducted by Rightmove. This make it 7 times cheaper then renting a place in Mayfair, which is the most expensive London district. Almost every school in Plumstead has a rating of 'Good' by Ofsted.
The annual Plumstead Make Merry festival is the longest-running annual community festival in the Borough since 1975 with music, arts and activities. Its funded and run voluntarily by the locals and celebrates the areas history and diverse demographic.
