Plucked string instruments are a subcategory of string instruments that are played by plucking the strings. Plucking is a way of pulling and releasing the string in such a way as to give it an impulse that causes the string to vibrate. Plucking can be done with either a finger or a plectrum.
Most plucked string instruments belong to the lute family (such as guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, banjo, balalaika, sitar, pipa, etc.), which generally consist of a resonating body, and a neck; the strings run along the neck and can be stopped at different pitches. The zither family (including the autoharp, kantele, gusli, kannel, kankles, kokle, koto, guqin, gu zheng and many others) does not have a neck, and the strings are stretched across the soundboard. In the harp family (including the lyre), the strings are perpendicular to the soundboard and do not run across it. The harpsichord does not fit any of these categories but is also a plucked string instrument, as its strings are struck with a plectrum when the keys are depressed.
It is also possible to divide the instruments in groups focused on how the instrument is played.
Types of playing techniques
All string instruments produce sound from one or more vibrating strings, transferred to the air by the body of the instrument (or by a pickup in the case of electronically amplified instruments). They are usually categorized by the technique used to make the strings vibrate (or by the primary technique, in the case of instruments where more than one may apply.) The three most common techniques are plucking, bowing, and striking. An important difference between bowing and plucking is that in the former the phenonemon is periodic, so that the overtones are kept in a strictly harmonic relationship to the fundamental.

Plucking Britain on the Strings《弹扫英伦》—— CCOM Plucked String Instruments Ensemble 中央音乐学院弹拨乐团
Composed by: Xie Aitong
Conductor: Cui Yuanyuan
Performed by: Central Conservatory of Music Plucked String Instruments Ensemble
This piece is an adaptation of the English folk song “Greensleves” and an excerpt from “The Phantom of the Opera” written by the British musical master Andrew Lloyd Webber. Whilst retaining the melodies of these two pieces, the music uses the “stricking” and “plucking” playing techniques of Chinese plucked string instruments to present a variety of acoustic forms, bringing a different auditory experience to the audience.
