Kaushiki Chakraborty sings the romantic afternoon Raag Bhimpalasi, showcasing the ornaments and rapid-fire melodies of her Patiala khayal gharana.
Learn more about the music:
Kaushiki’s virtuoso technique is the result of years of intense training, primarily from her esteemed father Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty. She hails from the Patiala gharana, known for a strong Islamic influence and elaborate ornamentation when singing taan [fast improvised melodies]. She describes her approach: “It’s all in the mind. One has to mentally align oneself to the form...My training has taught me two approaches to music – to do music and or to become it. The latter gives you the fluidity to transcend form and become one with it.”
Milind Kulkarni, also featured, is a modern exponent of Hindustani classical harmonium. Starting at the age of seven, he learned fast under the tutelage of successive gurus - Vasantrao Gurav, Anna Diwan, and Pramod Marathe. He still studies under the latter, and also receives accompaniment instruction from leading non-harmonium artists too, including vocalist Ulhas Kashalkar and tabla maestro Suresh Talwalkar.
Bhimpalasi is an afternoon raga, said to evoke sringara [attraction, romantic love]. It uses the notes of Kafi thaat, with an aroha [ascent] of nSgmPnS and an avroh [descent] of SnDPmgRS. Characteristically, Dha and Re only appear in the descending line, and are approached from the notes above. Ma is the vadi [king note]. The raga uses the notes of the Western Dorian mode, and the closest Carnatic raga is Abheri. Nina Burmi uses her smooth three-octave vocal range to explore the thumri style - a semi-classical genre intimately connected with dance, poetry, and drama.
Learn more about the music:
Thumri is a sensuous ‘light classical’ style, originating in Uttar Pradesh. The word is derived from the Hindi ‘thumakna’, meaning ‘to walk with dancing steps so as to make the ankle-bells tinkle’, and the genre remains closely connected with dance and drama. Ragas are treated more flexibly, and songs are often devotional, romantic, or even erotic in nature. Lyrics have a central role, often being based on folk tales or classical poetry, and commonly depicting the separation of lovers, or myths of Lord Krishna.
Nina Burmi sings in the Kirana gharana style, tackling khayal, thumri, bhajan, and other forms. Currently living in the UK, she trained under the esteemed husband-wife pairing of Dilshad Khan and Parveen Sultana, and combines the latter’s wide vocal range with a more sparsely ornamented approach. In this song she is joined by top accompanists, with lyrics describing the tension and sorrow of a lover who is separated from Lord Krishna.
Recorded for Darbar Festival 2006

Pt. Bhimsen Joshi is probably the most celebrated face of Hindustani Classical vocals. A legendary khayal singer who is a shining star in the vast skyline of Indian Classical music. Born on 4th February, 1922 in Karnataka, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is the descendant of Kirana stream of Hindustani classical music. He is famous for the "Khayal", a form of Hindustani classical. Bhimsen Joshi was interested in music since a very young age and at the age of 11 he left home in search of a Guru. He found the apt teacher for him very close to his house. Under the tutelage of Savai Gandharva he learnt many ragas and perfected his tone, pitch and the best of Kirana gharana. Pt. Bhimsen joshi was awarded the prestigious Bharat Ratna award by the Govt. Of India for his achievements in the field of Hindustani Classical Music. Joshi was mostly a puritan when it came to Indian Classical Music. His music often injected surprising and sudden turns of phrase, for example through the unexpected use of boltaans. Over the years, his repertoire tended to favor a relatively small number of complex and serious ragas; however, he remained one of the most prolific exponents of Hindustani classical music. Pt.Bhimsen Joshi has perfected not just the Khayal interpretations but has also sung Bhajans in Hindi and Marathi. His bhajans are widely heard by not just ardent music lovers but people all over. This versatile singer has also recorded Kannada Dasa Krithis in Dasavani, which are usually sung by Carnatic musicians.
In this album Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has sung one of his favourite raga “Vrindavani Sarang”. Vrindavani Sarang is a Kafi thaat raga. The notes Ga and dha are not used in this raga. Its origin from thaat Kaafi is peculiar as it uses the shuddha form of "ni" in its Aaroha, whereas the komala form of "ni" and "ga" is the main characteristic of the Kaafi thaat. So it is possible to make a mistake in identifying its thaat as Khamaj. This complicated Raga has been executed brilliantly by the maestro. The other track that Panditji has recorded for this album is a Thumri. A Thumri is a light classical or semi classical format that is primarily song based. The Thumri that Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has recorded here is “Ab Ke Sawan”, a beautiful track that has been presented by Panditji in his trademark signature style. Overall this is a classic Hindustani Classical album that is a listener's delight.
