Plesetsk Cosmodrome (Russian:Космодром «Плесецк»), a Russianspaceport located in Mirny, Arkhangelsk Oblast, about 800km north of Moscow and approximately 200km south of Arkhangelsk, dates from 1957. Originally developed as an ICBM site for the R-7 missile, it also served for numerous satellite launches using the R-7 and other rockets. Its high latitude makes it useful only for certain types of launches, especially the Molniya orbits, so for much of the site's history it functioned as a secondary location, with most orbital launches taking place from Baikonur, in the KazakhSSR. With the end of the Soviet Union, for Russia Baikonur became foreign territory which charged usage fees, so Plesetsk has seen considerably more activity since the 2000s.
Overview
Plesetsk (Lat: 62°55'32.32"N, Lon: 40°34'40.36"E) is used especially for military satellites placed into high inclination and polar orbits since the range for falling debris is clear to the north which is largely uninhabited Arctic and polar terrain. It is situated in a region of taiga, or flat terrain with boreal pine forests.
The vast Plesetsk Cosmodrome territory is located nearby and is administered from the town of Mirny which is 9 kilometers (5.6mi) away from Plesetsk. The territory also includes the Plestsy Airport.
Etymology
The name is derived from the word "плёс" (plyos) which means "river reach". Plestsy is the name for a small lake which Plesetsk adjoins.
History
The area was originally populated by the Finno-Ugric peoples and then colonized by the Novgorod Republic. It belonged at the trading routes connecting central and northern Russia: first, from Moscow to the White Sea along the Onega River, and then, after 1765, along the newly built road between Saint-Petersburg and Arkhangelsk, which still exists and passes Kargopol and Plesetsk. However, the Plesetsk area until the 1890s was underpopulated since it was located at some distance from the main rivers of the region. From 1796, it belonged to Arkhangelsky Uyezd of Arkhangelsk Governorate. In 1894—1897, Plesetskaya railway station was built during the construction of the railroad between Vologda and Arkhangelsk. Eventually, the volost center was moved from the selo of Navolok to Plesetskaya.
Rocket launch at Plesetsk Cosmodrome – In the Army Now Ep.6
Back in the hangar, Anna and Pavel observe their rocket being assembled. They learn some space industry jargon as well as the meaning behind the Russian Space Forces’ insignia. For the “bloom of the iron flower”, they visit the launch control centre. Anna becomes the first woman to hold one of the keys that launches a rocket.
It turns out that a successful rocket launch in Plesetsk requires a combination of science, religion and superstition. Not long after Anna finds out that a female name is written on all rockets as a lucky charm, a Russian Orthodox priest arrives. He recruits Pavel as a sexton and proceeds to bless the rocket, the mission, and everyone involved.
