Hilary Erhard Duff (born September 28, 1987) is an American actress and singer. Duff began her acting career at a young age, and quickly became labeled a teen idol as the starring titular character in the television series Lizzie McGuire (2001–04). The series proved to be a hit, leading to a film adaptation of the series to be released. Duff began working on numerous projects with the Disney channel, including the film Cadet Kelly (2002). She later began work on an album, releasing the Christmas themed Santa Claus Lane (2002) through Walt Disney Records. Upon signing with Hollywood Records, Duff began working on her second studio album, Metamorphosis (2003). The album achieved critical and commercial success, topping the Billboard 200 and selling over three million copies in the United States alone. The album also found success in both Canada and Japan. Duff's success in both acting and music led to her becoming a household name, with merchandise such as dolls, clothing, and fragrances being released.
Hilary Duff is the self-titled third studio album by American recording artist Hilary Duff. It was released on September 15, 2004, by Hollywood Records. Duff cited the album as being more mature than her previous albums, stating "Basically, I'm not Lizzie McGuire anymore". The seventeen-track album saw Duff collaborating with the same producers she did on Metamorphosis, saying that it was more comfortable for her that way. Recording sessions for the album took place during May to August 2004, partially between filming of Raise Your Voice (2004) and The Perfect Man (2005), both in which Duff had starring roles.
It received generally negative reviews from music critics, many of whom compared the album to the music of Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson. The album debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 192,000 copies in its first week. To date, Hilary Duff has sold 1,800,000 copies in the US. It became her second consecutive number one debut in Canada and produced two singles that were not major hits. It was eventually certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Hilary Duff was number sixty-five on Billboard magazine's year-end top albums chart in November 2005.
Roller Coaster is the second album, released in 2004, by Scott Cain, singer-songwriter and winner of Australian Popstars 2002. It was released on the ABC Kids label and is targeted at children, but is lyrically relatively adult and not dissimilar to his debut album, Controlled Folly. However Cain co-wrote every song on Roller Coaster compared to only two on his debut.
The album's themes, according to the press release, are "songs that most kids can relate to; from having your first celebrity crush, hanging out, and generally enjoying life". Many of the tracks on Roller Coaster relate somehow to skateboarding. The track "Hilary Duff" (about Hilary Duff, sometimes called "I've Got a Crush on Hilary Duff") was released for airplay as a promotional single, and a music video was shot, but the track never quite saw release as a proper commercial single. The track "Perfect Day" here made its second appearance, having also been included on Controlled Folly in 2002, and "Step Into My World" was originally released on a Roadshow compilation in 2003.
"Play with Fire" is a song recorded by American singer Hilary Duff for her fourth studio album, Dignity (2007). It was written by Duff, Kara DioGuardi, Rhett Lawrence and will.i.am and produced by Lawrence. The song was sent to mainstream radio in the United States on August 21, 2006, as the lead single from Dignity.
"Play with Fire" was formerly called "Happy" but the song's lyrics and instrumentals were changed, and "Happy" became a separate track on Dignity. The song is played during the first club scene in the 2006 film Material Girls, in which Duff stars.
According to Duff, "Play with Fire" and the other songs on the album are "more dancey" than her previous efforts and make use of more real instruments. "[I]t's fun and funky and different, something new for me. It's really cool", she said. She also described the album's sound as "a little less pop-rock and more electronic-sounding. It has a lot of dance melodies." The "teaser" release of the single in advance of the album was, as she put it, "to give listeners a chance to get into my new sound, which matches the whole dance/electronic rock sounding vibe."
"Play with Fire" is credited to Nanker Phelge, a pseudonym used when tracks were composed by the entire band, even though lead singer Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards are the only Rolling Stones to appear on the track. The song was recorded late one night in January 1965 while the Stones were in Los Angeles recording with Phil Spector at the RCA Studios. Richards performed the song's acoustic guitar opening while Jagger handled vocals and tambourine (enhanced using an echo chamber). Spector played bass (actually a tuned-down electric guitar), and Jack Nitzsche provided the song's distinctive harpsichord arrangement and tamtams. The Stones left for a tour of Australia the following day.
The song's lyrics talk of the singer's relationship with a high society girl, disparaging the lifestyle much in the same way that "19th Nervous Breakdown" would in a more up-tempo feel. The title refers to the idiom "If you play with fire, you will get burned."
The third season of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation premiered on CBS on September 26, 2002 and ended May 15, 2003. The series stars William Petersen and Marg Helgenberger.
