In 2011, the school was changed to theme schools, as part of a goal to give students a better choice in areas they wanted to pursue, with four smaller academies operating within the high school. These schools include the School of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), School of Education and Training (SET), School of Architecture and Construction Trades (ACT), and School of Business, Technology, Marketing, and Finance (BTMF).
As of the 2010-11 school year, the school had an enrollment of 2,058 students and 201.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.24:1. There were 1,456 students (70.7% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 85 (4.1% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.
Opened on October 3, 1963 as John H. Kinzie High School; The name was changed to the present name in honor former President John F. Kennedy who was assassinated the year of the school's founding in 1965.
Athletics/Sports
Kennedy competes in the Chicago Public League (CPL) and is a member of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). Kennedy varsity athletic teams are named the "Crusaders". The boys' baseball team were Class AA and public league champions in 1977–78. Kennedy boys' cross country were Class AA eight times (1976–77, 1978–79, 1979–80, 1992–93, 1997–2001) and public league champions in 1997–98. The girls' bowling team were public league champions five times (1974–75, 1975–76, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1987–88).

John F Kennedy foaled 8 May 2012 is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse. He was beaten as an odds on favourite on his debut but won his next two races, the final being the Juvenile Turf Stakes. At the end of 2014 he was one of the antepost favourites for the Epsom Derby.

He began odds on favourite but was beaten 2 and a half lengths by the Jim Bolger trained Hall of Fame under a ride by Joseph O'Brien. He won his next start at The Curragh by 4 and a half lengths. Despite an entry in the Racing Post Trophy his final start of 2014 came back at Leopardstown in the Juvenile Turf Stakes which he won beating stablemate East India.
